Hi all:

As the third generation of my family to be totally enamored with Rutt's, it is hard for me to share this post without jamming up my keyboard with drool. Nonethless, I press on, in search of the elusive secret to Rutt's relish.

I know it is a secret, and like Santa Clause and the Easter Bunny perhaps I don't want to know the truth, but I have always wondered what makes the relish SO MUCH better than any other I have ever had.

Anyone know? Care to guess?? Want to split a Ripper???

I gotta say--I recently went to Rutt's Hut with great anticipation.

I was very underwhelmed.

First-the ambiance was great--a true "dive" you couldn't start from scratch and duplicate it!

Second--the service--very nice people-I felt like a regular.

Third--the dogs. very mediocre--I just didn't get much flavor from the dog. It was crisp on the outside (great) but rather mushy on the inside. I also should have had the bun toasted! soft mushy bun plus mushy dog equals a not so good eating experience.

The relish?

I didn't like that --it was sour and of a strange consistancy--i think a dog needs a good counterpoint--something very sharp and clean tasting like a good pickle relish. though on condiments I agree that it should be whatever one likes here.

I do like fried dogs (my favorite place is Swanky Frank in Norwalk CT).

I will go back to Rutt's and try em again because every good dog deserves.......

JohnL - It is worth another try, perhaps order the dog another way, you can get it more well done, also known as a "weller" also I would recommend the chili as well!

John:

I happen to agree with you about the rolls needing a little more to them but think you should definitely give the place a second shot. I also get fries with gravy on the side which provide a nice contrast to the dog, which I load with mustard and relish.

Rutt's serves a unique dog, although there are places in North Jersey that serve the same Thumann's dog for deep frying. Rutt's cooks their dogs to different degrees of doneness; I prefer the weller, or well done. Cooked more than a ripper and less than a cremator. Mot people I know either love or hate the dog. It's milder than a spicy all beef. I like the contrast between the tough gnarled skin and the tender meat inside. I also don't eat any relish except for Rutt's. I found out recently that they changed their rolls. Rutt's, Jerry's, and the Hot Grill all switched to Sabrett rolls because Pechter's no longer makes their own.

Chopped carrots and cabbage.

Well, yeah, that's what they say, but I'm sure there's more to it... what else is in there? Admittedly, I haven't been there but I plan to go tomorrow. I'm researching a homemade relish for a dog for Melt.

Glenn,

Glad to see that you may be adding a dog to the offerings at Melt. Do you know what brand of dog and how it will be prepared? I've tried with no success to find out the ingredients for Rutt's relish.
