Could anyone kindly tell me where I might find Kasha, packaged or prepared, in Manhattan?

Drink maker, heart taker!

Teresa's serves kasha, as I assume various other Polish restaurants do. If you want garden-variety kasha, I would have thought you could get a package in most any grocery store; no?

Kasha may also be labelled as buckwheat groats. If you can't find kasha in the market, ask for thta. However the most available purveyor, Wulf's, I believe, calls their product by both names.

I would be that the Carnegie Deli or Katz's has kasha varneshkes (sp?) on the menu, if that's any help!

"I'm not eating it...my tongue is just looking at it!" --My then-3.5 year-old niece, who was NOT eating a piece of gum

"Wow--this is a fancy restaurant! They keep bringing us more water and we didn't even ask for it!" --My 5.75 year-old niece, about Bread Bar

"He's jumped the flounder, as you might say."

I've had the kasha varnishkas at 2nd Avenue Deli and can heartily recommend them.

Wulf's brand, in the brown box, is usually found in the Kosher aisle at most supermarkets -- at least, around here. It comes in various grain sizes, so be sure you check the package and the little see-through window on front carefully. Last Rosh Hashannah I had a craving for kasha and bought the fine grain by mistake when what I had wanted was a coarser, heartier grain, just like Mom used to make.

Zabar's usually has pre-pack kasha in the deli case, throw it in your microwave and you're done. I've also seen it from time to time at Fairway at the deli case. And the Polish places do it as well, Polana across from Teresa's for example, First Avenue around 5th street.

Not 5th St. I think you're thinking of the little store on the east side of 1st Av. between 7th and St. Marks' Place that used to sell pierogis, soups, and the like. I'll try to remember to check on the place because I can't remember if it's still open.

It's a restaurant, I think its address is 110 First Avenue, its just north of the McDonald's, on the east side of First Avenue. There is a Polish deli across the street. Polonia (right spelling) makes a lima bean stew that when it is right, is fantasic. Varies a bit.

Yeah, that's correct. It is in fact across the street from (and slightly further north than) Teresa's, between 6th and 7th Sts. on the east side of 1st Av.:

I was underwhelmed with the place during the time when Teresa's was undergoing renovation a few years ago, but I never tried the lima bean stew.

Polonia seems to have another branch:

Don't know anything about the branch, I've always liked their food better than Teresa's, although it's not always the cleanest place around. The fried pork cutlet is as big as your head and quite good. I'm also partial to the Borscht, the summer version they have now is nice, with bits of chunky cucumbers.
