I'll be visiting family in the area next week. I'm looking for places that are

family friendly and have vegetarian options. Thanks.

I'd say visit my dad, but he's in Hawaii right now....

Since most restaurants in the area cater to a tourist crowd, family friendly isn't an issue, but watch out for prices. Vegetarian might be more of a trick, but the food downtown is standard American small town fare minus all the chains (zoning regulations haven't allowed any chain restaurants into downtown Cooperstown - Pizza Hut fought for years and lost.) so you can find Italian places that will have pasta (Coachman's on 80), diners, salads at most places. The local grocery store actually has a small selection of vegetarian items now. Boca comes to the Leatherstocking Region. As for fine dining, I haven't been to the O-Te-Sa-Ga in years so can't say much about the selection there, but they have a website now, I believe.

One thing I highly recommend is getting to Schnieder's bakery on the corner of Main Street. They have the best cinnamon doughnuts of anywhere in the world, IMO, and their onion rolls got me extra credit in high school. If you go around the corner past the real estate place, there's a window into the bakery where you can watch.

If you're willing to drive a bit I've heard good things about the Autumn Cafe in Oneonta in terms of vegetarian items, but I haven't been there myself, so I can't vouch for it personally. If you do get there, let me know how it is!

Enjoy the snow.

Thank you so much for the suggestions. I'm definitely going to check out

that bakery. I've never been to Cooperstown before so this should be

fun. Not a lot of snow in CT right now so I'm kind of looking forward to

seeing lots of it.

Cooperstown is a great town to visit. The food has been good, but not particularly memorable to me. If you enjoy a good beer, I would suggest a visit toBrewery Ommegang, a wonderful maker of Belgian style beers. They have restaurant suggestions on their website. The people of Ommegang are also leaders of Slow Food in the area, so they should be pretty knowledgable.

Doc - enquiring minds are dying to know the backstory. Was this some sort of baked goods payola scheme? I am truly shocked :wacko:

I have no food suggestions, but here's a head's up -- be prepared to spend a long day at the Baseball Hall of Fame. There is a lot to see and time just flies while you're walking around. There's also a walking tour you can do of the town, assuming the weather permits. You can pick up a map at the bureau of tourism which is also on Main Street.

As for the brewery - I haven't been, but I recently tasted some of their beers and they are fabulous!

The Farmer's Museum is worth a visit as well.

If anyone in your group likes soccer, the National Soccer Hall of Fame is in Oneonta, which is near-by.

My best recommendation for you would be to drive 20 minutes down the road to Oneonta, where you will find better restaurants in general. A specific recommendation is the Autumn Cafe, a pretty place with lots of plants, and a large choice of vegetarian options on the menu. As a matter of fact, they will substitute tofu for most of the meat entrees on the menu, as well as pastas, omelettes, and salads. Check out the web site: Autumn Cafe Website

Hope you aren't going here in the middle of winter!! (Brrrr!!)

Excellent link. The menu looks wonderful, something for the veggies and

non-veggies alike. And yes, we're visiting next week so I'm packing

the heavy

coats! It looks like a great town from the website so I very well might

return this summer for some camping and kyacking.

I'm even more excited about this trip now that I know about the brewery.

My 7 year old daughter thinks she's Mia Hamm so I have a feeling we'll

be heading over to the soccer place as well. Thanks for that suggestion.

Phae - had a business teacher who offhandedly mentioned Cooperstown. As a fourth gen summer resident (my dad is now full time there) I felt the need to test if this teacher was a true fan, or just a baseball tourist. I mentioned the word bakery, he mentioned Schnieder's by name, and raved about the onion rolls. I brought him some a few weeks later after a weekend trip to close up the Camp.

I got an award at the end of the year for my academic achievment in the Business department.

I know how payola works. :)

I am so happy to have a good answer for this one. Look at a map and take a short drive to Cherry Valley and eat at "Alex & Ika" (see website: http://www.cherryvalleyny.com/alex/alex.htm). It is run by a husband (chef Alex) and wife (everything else Ika) team. It's tiny - only about 8 tables plus 4 at the bar. The entire menu is on the whiteboard and different every night. It is wonderful and fun. During the summer, the cast from the local opera comes in after the show. The last time I went I had the wonderful bread and olives for a starter. Followed by the superb lavender crusted flank stead. Please, go. The kids will love it too.

PS - Haven't found anything really good yet in Cooperstown proper, but I can tell you all about Doubleday field where my husband's league plays a game every summer and I got to keep the scoreboard last July!

Well, butter my b--- and call me a biscuit!

PS - re "Alex & Ika"

Meant to say "steak", not "stead".

And the fact that the kids will like it too does not mean that the wine list is not wonderful. And don't forget to try the cheese plate at the end..............

Wow, another great suggestion. I'm starting to wish I had made plans to stay

longer than two days!

Any new news on Cooperstown? I'll be up there next weekend, a trip to Ommegang is definitely in order. I'll be heading up with myself and three other carnivores so vegetarian options are not neccessary.

I would kill everyone in this room for a drop of sweet beer...

OMG, yes, Schneider's: the doughnut holes are works of art. You have to go early, though, they sell out by 9AM.

Dining at the Otessaga tends to be of the large block of protein smothered in gluey sauce variety.

Food, glorious food!
