Cougar Gold

Recommended Posts

Mmmm, cougar gold.

My sister was a cougar (I was a husky) and she would bring a tin home for the hollidays. Very good stuff. You can get a good deal on the end cut tins from the creamery. These are tins that are filled with about five 1/2 inch thick disks as opposed to the one big wheel.

The late and lamented Frederick's and Nelson's used to carry Cougar Gold. Alas. And I don't think the Frangos are the same any more, either.

Does anyone know if Cougar Gold at all similar to McLaren's Aged Cheddar Cheese? The McLaren's stuff is sold in a red tub and is relatively expensive--about Cdn $4-5 per 8 oz. I think it's only available in Canada (but perhaps it has limited distribution in the US) and is manufactured by Kraft. I have heard of the greatness of Cougar Gold and looking at the pictures, it looks an awful lot like McLaren's. Since the chances of my getting my hands on Cougar Gold anytime soon are slim, I'd like to think I can come close by buying a tub of McLaren's Cheddar  .

I always scope out de Luarenti's when I come to town. Although I haven't bought much there since they sold me a pretty dodgy truffle a few years ago. I think my sons still play road hockey with it.

Cougar Gold tastes a lot like the Balderson 5 year old cheddar which we get here in Vancouver. I think it's the memories of going down stairs at Freddie's and buying a couple cans of cheese, then smuggling them home that I miss. I also love the cans. It seems odd that the school that gave us Ryan Leaf can make great tasting cheese.
