  1. For what it's worth ($0) Downey does have the original McDonald's restaurant. Which I suppose was a "neighborhood restaurant" when it opened way back when...
  2. Where is Pho Cafe? I work in Silverlake, and I don't think I've ever seen this..
  3. I live in Glendale. There's an Italian deli/gourmet shop called "Mario's" up the street from me. It's sort of an oddity...I'm amazed it gets any business at all in this mostly Armenian neighborhood. But I guess people in neighboring towns like Silverlake, Burbank, and Hollywood know about it as a good place to get cheese, olive oil, prosciutto and stuff. Good luck to yr friend!
  4. this is great...i drive down to irvine about once a month to visit my cousin and we are always stuck for places to eat. incidentally, anyone know of any good filipino restaurants in irvine? we've looked.
  5. it's been a while since i posted...wish i didn't miss this. please count me in on the next stop in your tour!

    Mos Burger

wow...please elaborate for the uninitiated. (and those who don't read japanese) these burgers look delicious.
  7. don't like in-n-out? there's gotta be an in-n-out thread here somewhere for guys like me...i love the stuff. i agree, however, that the fries are undercooked. fyi, the trick is to order them "well done"...they come out crispy. and i assume you're aware that there are many other secret codes you can use when you order, multiplying your sandwich and french fry options. sorry if this is a repost, but here you go: Secret Menu but, getting back to the topic...those carnitas sound amazing...Burrito King here in LA has great carnitas, too...their burrito con carnitas is so good you'll hardly notice the gleaming fat trailing down your forearm, finally dripping from your elbow to form a small pool on your leg. and i've never heard of molcajete, though i saw lots of dishes with nopalitos when i was in new mexico. maybe this was one of them. fyi again, california began numbering their exits last year. Another link: Exit Signs maybe next time you go, there'll be a numbered exit sign, and you'll be able to update us. and i have seen black people working at in-n-out, actually. but if you live in SF, then you probably don't have as many in-n-out restaurants nearby as i do. plus i go all the time. more intriguing, perhaps, are the hidden bible verses on the wrappers, the bottoms of the cups, etc...

    Dinner! 2003

beef tongue bulgogi...i usually do pork, but i saw this at California Market today, shaved almost paper thin, and i thought, what the heck. it's very tender, very lean...i may never go back to pork. with a typical assortment of panchan...seasoned fish cake, spinach, and my favorite, cucumber kimchee. oh, and a bottle of soju. with peach juice.

    A Challenge

i've seen recipes for lobster quiche.
  10. i've only seen stuffed sopapillas on menus in new mexico restaurants. nowhere else. it's like a burrito, but instead of getting rolled into a tortilla the contents are enclosed in sopapilla dough and deep-fried. delicious. pork green chile stew definitely. on a nostalgic note, i took a road trip through new mexico a few years ago, stopping every now and then to eat at roadside restaurants. i don't remember having a single meal that was not perfectly, joyfully satisfying. can't wait to go back. amazing food.
  11. i love jalapeño poppers.
  12. "Two-thousand five-hundred thirty-six, two-thousand five-hundred thirty-seven..." they'll never notice...don't panic now...don't panic! ...but that look in his eyes, so calculating...he knows who you are...HE KNOWS!!! STEADY girl...steady...only 536 to g--wait a minute, where was I? DAMMIT!
  13. my first post! this is a late entry to this thread, but a friend of mine once stumbled upon a recipe for tiramisu involving Hostess Twinkies and instant coffee. yuh-uhm.
