Pete McMartin wrote about businesses in the city that were suffering as a result of the hockey imbroglio. He mentioned Wilson's repeatedly throughout the article but referred to it as "Winston's" throughout. They can't seem to get a break from the media. ← It must be something in the water. There is another writer in this town who refered to the Internationally Famous Gingerbread Pudding ( also known as G-bread ) as a lemon merique tart.

I heard that Wilson's has gone through a concept change, going more mainstream pub than Steakhouse. CAn anyone confirm this ?

Ok, you win. I just looked at the pictures of the Brighton Market. No more complaining about Granville Island. We should be thankful for what we have and glory in the diversity and quality that it offers. That fishmonger is so very sad, and look and the butcher - so little to offer. I think a family trip to G.I is in order for Sunday and I will control my achilles tendon ramming habit. Thanks for those shots Andy, we forget how lucky we are !

Um, annanstee , the name is Neil. I try not to hide it. Noah is Mooshmouse's ( or Mooshmice's ) kid - eater all of things cookie.

Oh, come on, there is nothing delicious about a slow roasted, full day marinated, spit roasted prime rib with natural pan juices. Yuk ! Probably triple A - give me a break. I guess you are talking about Yorkshire Pudding as well - ewwwww. gross I hate that stuff. ( Call me and let me know when it is ready ! ) Have fork, will travel

I think that the wine store on the Island is run or party owned by Vincor or Calona Wines. It limits the selection that they bring in as to their own wines. It is the same at the Mark Anthony Store at 25th and Oak but M.A. brings in their whole portfolio, where the G.I. store is limited to B.C. wines only. I recall that this was a limitation on them getting the space - B.C. only ( I think it is their choice to limit it to their own wines ) The result is thay are missing lots of great B.C. wines in favour of some second and third labels of the same company. I think. Others might be able to present a clearer picture than this. Neil

Not in my books it does not. I have said so on this board before as to how frustrating it is to have people walk five abreast, oblivious to the growing line up of people behind them. Other than declaring shopping a full contact sport, what is the solution ? Just grin and bear it and be thankful we live in such a wonderful and desired city ? Neil - father of two little kids - Wyles P.S. I have found that knocking the person with the wheel of the stroller about three times in the Achilles tendon generally gets the message through. That is my little secret to survival on G.I.

Ok, in order to get this thread back on topic, or at least with a local angle. Yes, the horse meat place was on Hastings. I remember it from my yoot as I was riding downtown on the Vomit Comet ( #10 Hastings ). I always wondered about it but never enough to go in. As to the Vancouver Aquarium, we are yearly members so if there was a chance to do some "harvesting", we should be notified. As for the Vancouver Children's petting zoo, that would have to be a "covert" op, although the stink of the goat would lead the Vancouver police right to us. That should satisfy the "local" content issue !

Goat ! - No problem. Perhaps we could turn them into goumet burgers. No prob with the deed either. Will you bring the wine ?

I have never really thought on this too much. My initial response is yuk and I am not sure why. I am not a "horsey" person and don't have problem loading "bossy" the cow into the cooler. I have a friend from South Africa that was mentioning zebra steaks - I thought about it for a minute, realizing that this was what the land provides in that part of the world. Perhaps it has something to do with the domestication of horses - I would not eat "spot" the dog or "morris" the cat either but have no problem chowing down on "fluffy" the bunny. Am I wierd ? I think that if I went to a high end restaorant ie: Lumiere and he had a horse proscuitto or something like that, I would try it. I would have the faith that the product was of the highest quality and the preparation was the best that I would ever have had a chance to have it. Would I be so brave on say, a not so high end restaurant on the Downtown Eastside , I don't think so. What else would I not eat ? Bugs Dog Cat Seagull Crow Weasel Rat Squirrel any sort of primate - monkey, gorilla etc. spider dolphin eagle mustard That is all I can think of right now. I am sure this wil spark a few questions and sub topics. Neil

Um, Jamie. Thanks for the nod in the beef dept. but the dessert they beat down the door for is the Gingerbread Pudding.
-
We just put diced red peppers in there so we can tell them from the beef burgers. Once they are cooked, they really all start to look the same. N

I remember Mama Gold's - on Yew right? Was it a Cougar Bar? I would have been far too young and self-absorbed to have picked up on that. ← Is that the spot where the Urban Well is in Kits ?

Ok, with comments like that, you are starting to work your way back into my good books. I take that as a high compliment, considering the amount of food that you are able to consume. As I said, the lamb / yam is the #1 combination around here. Nice to see everybody in. Neil

Truth be told: Where've you eaten lately? (Part 1)

I recall us offering to stick your head in the oven - with the Certified Angus Beef Briskets. Hardly abuse, more like an invitation to dine ! -

Albert, you can keep her. You seem to be the only one who can afford to feed her 9 meals a day. Good Luck -

It obviously was not enough to get the gingerbread listed as your only obsession again. Being your obsession certainly does not have the same cache now that you have four and not just one. I think you are spreading your obsession a little thin these days. It certainly is not like the good old days when you only had one. Are you getting kickbacks from other places to get on the list ? Is there a little payola going on. I can roll with the big boys if I need to - extra caramel sauce, double pumpkin ice cream, whatever it takes, just get rid of the other guys - Lorna, you are so fickle. Is there no pleasing you ? That's it, we are breaking up, I can't take this level of abuse any longer, you two timer , I mean four timer, hussy !!!! -
"BRIAN" You using such fancy word as "Digresses" startled me since I have been trying to convince a NYC Deli Operator to do what I thought you said. I have been doing my best to convince him that if he wanted to become # 1 in Deli/Pastrami and Bagels it would be a real marketing ploy to serve"Pastrami, Salt Beef [Corned Beef]" and imported Montreal "Bagels" to his potential customers who craved the old time taste and flavors not generally available in shhhhh, NYC anymore. When I read your posting I thought it had already happened. Irwin ← It has, I think thats the point!

Ther was a rather lengthy shoot at the Yaletown Brewpub about a "working in a restaurant" show last year. I would bet that this is the one. The Blue Water does a fair amount of movie shoot, but I know a location manager and what they charge is out of CTV's budget. Only Hollywood stuff at the Blue Water.

There was a stand selling steamed brisket (I think I overheard the owner tell a customer it's Montreal style, though) for $15 a pound in the Granville Island Market today...I forget the name of the company, but it is located near the bakery that's near the Stock Market. ← J. Beethoven's - same kind that they sell at the Irish Heather !!

Schedule an hour a week on your PDA and you can too! Cheers! ← PDA ? Post dishwahing afternoon ? Pre-Dinner activity ?

It was probably El Patio, on the corner, funny entrance and little courtyard. I am assuming the Sandman on Georgia. It is my understanding that both restaurants had their start at la Bodega, one partner breaking out on his own to start El Patio. Both places are good for the Spanish Tapas dining with Sangria. Enjoy

Reading a book. I have heard of that. I know people have done it. I recall a couple myself. Unless "The Cat in Hat" or "Go, dog, Go " count, there has not been time to sit and read a book. I rely on others for their interpretation and nod stupidly. Coffee. The shooter, right ? This post has made me so jealous. Reading and drinking coffee. I can only imagine those two activities going together.

Dang Eddy! I'm bummed out now! Was looking forward to some tarts next month. Oh well, get inspired and we'll see you ... somewhere ... very soon! A. ← Don't I feel like a shithead. I just got back from the Bravo Bistro. I did not know Eddy was not there. I have been a little lax in the last couple of days and not read every single thread or post. Is my love affair with egullet coming to an end ? Oh, well , looking forward to seeing you on the stove somewhere else Eddy. Good Luck Neil

I have a friend who got "pino - lized" for $14,000 for one bottle of armagnac, not to mention the 4 bottles of $1000 wine with dinner. That is just the beverages, not the food. Like I said, $20,000 could do it.
