  1. Depends. First of all you have to remember that Michael and Craig are friends. With that being said, I would go back there but I live in NJ! I had a dinner there about 6 months ago that was fabulous/memorable. Bring a few credit cards. I have also had Michael's cooking and he is a winner! Did you know that he used to work in NJ?

  2. Haven't eaten here in a long time. Was Yves cooking? I did taste something that he made at a charity event and thought it was delicious. Sorry--that's all I can remember. Did the owner ask how everything was? If you didn't tell him perhaps he will read it here. Thanks for report.

  3. We were at Udupi village on Friday night. First of all let me preface my comments by saying I am not a big fan of Indian food. But I heard good things about this place and wanted to try it. I couldn't stand the smell in the place when we walked in there and I should have left at that point. It was cloyingly sweet.  We had a special assortment of appetizers consisting of meduvada, mysore bonda, samosa, vegetable cutlet and cashew pakoda. Everthing was fried and tasted the same. Our entrees were fine. A spring dosai was a vegetable roll filled with cabbage, carrot, potato , peas and cauliflower with a thin layer of hot chutney. There was more dough than vegetables and I could not taste the hot chutney. We liked the an onion kulcha,  a bread stuffed with onion and spices which reminded us of a scallion pancake. The vegetable uthappam , a pancake topped with assorted vegetables was good. Dinner was ว. The only Indian restaurant that I have been to that I have liked is Moghul in Edison. Bacchus's post is  a more reliable report than mine as he is from South India and obviously is more familiar with this cuisine.

  4. Friends raved about Bella Rosa, 360 Rt 10 W, East Hanover, a nine month old BYO restaurant. They were right. The food was very good, service friendly and the décor was charming with a Tuscan country scene, vines and roses painted on the walls.

Specials were printed out with their prices and there were many items that we could have chosen. I wanted to try the butternut squash soup with Gorgonzola or the mussels with sambucca sauce but Lowell and I opted to share escarole with sausage which had a great sauce for dipping bread. For entrees we had the best sweet potato and pumpkin gnocchi with a roasted garlic rosemary cream sauce that I have had in a long time (ฟ). These light and airy dumplings were addictive and we couldn’t stop eating them. I would recommend you share this entrée as an appetizer as it was rich. We also had a scrumptious dish containing pan roasted shrimp, caramelized onions, crispy pancetta and a spicy pomadoro sauce (ล). The fish dishes listed on the menu were interesting and I will try them the next time we dine here. Some of the choices were blackened tuna with broccoli rabe and fresh tomato; grilled salmon over escarole, black olive and fresh tomato; and farfalle with strips of salmon and spinach in a pink sauce. We would also like to try an individual gourmet pizza.

Desserts are made in house and we shared a decent apple caramel pie with creamy homemade ice cream. Bella Rosa seats 58 and is a small establishment. Call 973-428-8611 for reservations which are necessary on weekends.

    Anyone been here?

I've been there a long time and I have paid off and begged alot of people to vote for me.  The trick is for eGullet to get to the first page. With that being said--when you vote for eGullet PLEASE also vote for me. Also--you do know that both sites deserve to be voted BEST. Thanks and where should I send the check! ;)

  6. I think Cinque Figlie has a  private room upstairs. You need to call the others to check. Never been to Citrus. If you are looking for a private room and location isn't a problem call Amanda's in Hoboken. They have a wine celler for up to 22. Also, America in Tenafly has a wine celler. I forgot about them. Bernards Inn in Bernardsville is lovely and I am pretty sure they have a private area.

  7. Moonstruck in Ocean Grove. You need to get there early as they don't take reservations. BYO.

La Nonna Piaccone in Bradley Beach

Blue Marlin in Bradley Beach--Jamaican and BYO

Joe and Maggies in Long Branch

Ray's Seafood in Long Branch-not sure if they are BYO

Have a good time and be sure to give us a report.

  8. Taste. The menu supplies the following definition; to have experience or enjoyment; savior. That is exactly what we did at this one week old restaurant. The Asian American cuisine is very good and Chef Jason Russo is a name to remember. Make a reservation here before the reviewers create a month long wait.

The restaurant is located in a nondescript strip mall at 21 Belleville Ave, Bloomfield. The outside with a wall of block glass and large Asian pots creates an elegant mood before you even enter the restaurant. The interior is white on white with splashes of color. A Buddha surrounded by candles looks down on the restaurant and a red and black Oriental design creates a focal point on another wall. The restaurant is sleek with a wood floor and tables set far apart. The upstairs balcony is for smokers.

Service was not up to par but hopefully as this establishment gets going minor mistakes will be corrected. The server did not know the menu but cheerfully went back into the kitchen to get the answers to every question I asked. For example, we were brought an amuse bouche of finely chopped "something" on pita bread. When we asked what it was we were told that it was chopped olives. It didn't taste like olives and eventually we learned that it was a mushroom/asparagus duxelles. When we asked what the soup of the day was the waiter didn't know and had to go back to the kitchen again to ask. We asked about an unknown wine on the small wine list. It took about 10 minutes for the waiter to bring back the information. The restaurant was empty with only one other table being occupied and a large staff with nothing to do. And please, when customers leave a restaurant and staff is standing by the door say "goodbye."

But enough about the service problems which many people feel comes with the territory in a restaurant that is one week old. The food is attention grabbing and very good. For appetizers we had delicate steamed vegetable dumplings that didn't come with a spicy sesame oil that is listed on the menu but with a fabulous spicy homemade mayonnaise. We also had a wok seared, al dente, long beans and baby bok choy in a lip smackin' sweet chile sauce. Both were delicious. A plate for two or four people of the chef's daily selection of sushi, maki and sashimi is also available as well as salads and noodle dishes such as lo mein or pad Thai.

For entrees I had an excellent salmon poached in yuzu (a Japanese citrus fruit) and soy broth served with baby carrots, squash, with rice. I took my spoon and finished all of the sauce. The fish was juicy and not overcooked as often happens in poaching. If you are looking for a light low calorie dish this one is for you. Lowell had a blue wasabi roasted chicken with a Fuji apple demi glace, baby vegetables and potato wedges. The chicken was also quite tasty and juicy but we expected it to be spicier because of the wasabi. Next time we would like to try the Szechwan pepper rack of lamb; Japanese eggplant stir fry with chicken; or the pork chop rubbed with cinnamon and five spice powder.

We shared raspberry fruit filled fried wontons topped with crème fraiche for dessert. They were fabulous but the portion was too small. Please give me four wontons next time! Lowell had coffee which was awful. With four glasses of wine @ŭ each, tax and tip the bill was ๯,

Be sure to read the other postings. Other posters beside myself have had problems here since this report.

  9. Steven--YOU are too modest. Why didn't you tell us that you will be an amateur contestant at the Seventh Annual Latke Lover's Cookoff and Dinner at the James Beard house? Do  you  need some mouths to practice on before this event?  ;)

  10. You don't have to buy wine by the case at Cosco. You can buy a single bottle. As for the Turley--I get it mail order now. BTW--in Hawaii I think every restaurant had Turley on their wine list.
