  1. Chef Krinn, My question relates to one of my obsessions - the lack of good, independent restarants in the area starting about where you are located and west/south of there. 2941 is more of a "destination" restaurant, but I wonder if you feel at all held back by your suburban location in terms of either customer support or creativity. And do you think that the suburbs or exurbs of Virginia is underserved in terms of food/chef focused places or are we only getting what we are willing to support?
  2. #1 - Haagen Dasz Strawberry ice cream with White Chocolate cover on a stick #2 - Drumsticks with Caramel - love the accumulation of chocolate in the bottom of the cone. makes the rest of the cone worthwhile. Honorable Mention - Bomb Pops - the Red White and Blue popsicles.
  3. I'd be up for it +1. We may need to do a lottery for this one.
  4. That good, huh?
  5. I think this one was being planned for next month. There was supposed to be a BBQ stop yesterday, but no word on that either. Edited to add - I see a few posts down that the BBQ trip did come off successfully.
  6. We have discussed this in passing a few times. The one at the soon to be moving to Dupont Circle SBC Cafe in Herndon is very good. Steve Klc has mentioned the one at Cafe Atlantico as being the best in town. It wouldn't surprise me if that was true.
  7. Let's invite some of the employees from Good Guys to our event! Strippers and BBQ - sounds like a good combination to me.
  8. Raita is always nice.
  9. SBasil, I'm curious about something. You appeared to do a very brisk business at lunch (which is admittedly the only time I have been). Was the move prompted by lack of business in Herndon, especially at night? I ask because we have had discussions here and on other threads about how receptive this area is to independent, chef-focused restaurants, so I am curious as to whether this area was supportive of what you were trying to do, which I saw as bringing good food to an underserved area under some obvious restraints.
  10. But how did it taste?
  11. In the first or second season of the Sopranos, Tony's mother was watching Emeril and commented (in her inimitiable, whiny way) that he never washed his hands. Not long after that, Emeril started making comments about washing his hands in his sink, "Courtesy of the Sopranos."
  12. I would think Great American and Clydes are neck and neck. BOth do decent food, at reasonable but not cheap prices, have multiple HUGE restaurants and have waits at nearly every lunch and dinner every day. Sounds like a recipe for success. Why didn't I think of that?
  13. I think this is the cart that is run by the guy that used to be a senior associate at one of the big law firms down town. He chucked it all to sell burritos. My wife used to rave about this one when she worked in the neghborhood. It was all vegetarian. But it closed up when she was still there in 2002 and she was devastated. It may have reopened since, however.
  14. I really meant potential business. And a more visible location.
  15. I just stopped in for my regular Cuban sandwich with black beans and roasted pepper soup here today and got some bad news for those of us out this way. I guess recognizing me as a somewhat regular, the owner (?) told me that they are going to be moving to Dupont Circle on P St. across from Obelisk in September. No word on when they are closing up in Herndon. She said that they would have patio seating and it sounds like this will have about four or five times more tables (which still isn't huge). The menu will remain similar to what it is now (eclectic), but with more extensive choices. This is an interesting move. I like this place, but will they stand out in a neighborhood with a lot of choices like Dupont, even on the small stretch of P St. they are moving too? A move had been hinted at on another thread earlier this year - allowing for more business for them. Dupont will defintely bring the business. It will be interesting to see how they do.

Why wouldn't that person just order from the five course menu. I'd be surprised if someone couldn't come up with something appealing from each course.
  17. I think of Five Guys as being more good compared with other fast-food burgers rather than comparing them to something you might get at an order-off-the-menu type of place. Just a different animal altogether.
  18. Just to break up the monotony here - I love Indian food. It is probably my favorite type of eating. I like the spicy flavors when it i supposed to be spicy and the intense flavors of even the non-spicy dishes (although the sweets are a little too much). Our DC area Indian Street Foods dinner eposed me to it even more and I loved the new stuff too. But I just don't like and don't get Japanese food. Maybe it is the subtlety, maybe it is lack of exposure and unfamiliarity with ingredients, maybe I just haven't had any good versions - but I just don't enjoy it.
  19. Interestingly, they aren't open for lunch. I would be willing to give it a try if it were, despite its obvious chain-ness. They would do a huge business if they were.
  20. There are two locations in Virginia - one in Tyson's and I can't think of te other off the top of my head. I have been to the one at Tyson's a few times and its not bad. The spicyness is a little tame, but it isn't quite a sweet as some of the other chain places. We've had pretty consistent results there.
  21. Huh. I've liked the cooking at Majestic the two times I've been and that type of decor appeals to me. It's the best that I have had in Old Town, but I am not quite a regular in the neighborhood. To each his/her own. Looking forward to trying Eve, but need to let the debit card cool down for a bit.
  22. I think that the less you are paying, the more easily you can forgive less than attentive service. Part of what you are paying for in higher-priced restaurants is more professional/better service. So I think service becomes a greater part of the experience comapred with the food the higher you go on the price scale. That said, there is no excuse at any price level for rude or inattentive service.
  23. I am actually panning on going there this weekend if I get a chance. I drove past it last weekend and it is smaller than I had even pictured. But I figure it is worth a shot - I'll report back.

Those first two may have been a mistake. My water and Champagne in the lounge was on the bill.
  25. Thanks for that Don. If only you had sprung for the marijuana that is traditional in the drink that was offered, we would have had an even better time. Oh well. *** This is not to be construed as saying that Passage to India would ever serve this with marijuana, just that it is traditionally served this way in India.
