  3. i've posted this on another thread, but here is a piece i wrote on a goan restaurant. would be interested to know what you think. x
  4. Caught Roy Hargrove and Maceo Parker here last night, in NY opening the JVC jazz fest. Seriously tasty.
  5. Is that a jazz trio? Yes Pan, I thought it'd be fun to have live music. I've tentatively invited my friends Clark Gayton (tuba or trombone) and Victor Jones, the drummer. Clark played at the the BBQ week tents and I've re-posted his photo on that thread. They won't be loud, but they will be groovy. Protests? I'll gladly lend them an ear and reconsider so don't be shy... and Tommy: can you still come Friday?
  6. The fellow on the far right with the trombone is my friend Clark Gayton. He plays Mondays at Lickwed (113 Ludlow near Delaney) and may drop by Friday's fete with Tuba and friends.
  7. Hope no one has anything against the small trio i invited: tuba, drums and flute.
  8. oh. my. god. i went there once dear Jaymes, dear Jaymes HOWEVER: the beer is cheap Olive's is as exotic as it gets, and as close to anything fresh as you'll find for miles. Wait it's not called Olives. What is it? The one place in town with a salad. It's that huge chain. I remember because I visited with a beau (met his bible-thumping parents) and by day three was dying for a salad and there we went. On the other hand, the Ozarks are gorgeous and you're close to Branson, home of the Oakridge Boys, for one. Not to mention Rodeo 2000, a HUGE disco with indoor Rodeos. No shit.
  9. sure. that way blondie can come.
  10. looks as though a case of champagne may be too much?
  11. may i ask: a friend and quite exceptional chef moved recently (a year ago?) to Austin. Here (nyc) he had a place called the 9th Street Market. There I believe he opened something new: do you know what it is?
  12. Having found Dujac my favorite of the (almost) affordable Burdundies, I was interested to read of the D-R mentioned here, and of course disappointed to note that I couldn't get any stateside. Claude, of the wines a rung down - in the $20 and less range - which Burgundies available in the US (NY) would you recommend to a Dujac-ophile?
  13. anyone tried the chorizo from tienda.com?
  14. Why not meet at my place then? I live in China, but can have the cava shipped

    Bordeaux 2000s

In my opinion, the last great value vintage was 1999. Well made wines, very forward. The distributors in this part of the country (Washington, DC) dumped these wines on the market at 50% markdowns to make room for the 2000s. 99 is wine to drink now. bouncy and complex if fresh. the mouton rothschild i especially liked
  16. Please also invite the Brothers M and Mr. Balic if Heston can't make it, maybe lml would come?

    Oregon Pinot Noir

The good ones have a sour cherry and wild strawberry component - not unlike Carneros pinot. The other ones have an overt sourness and they smell a bit like cranberry juice. think of all the delicious cranberry soda pop you could make. Or just a rock band: FatGuy's Bubbles and the Lost Grapes.
  18. Jumilla is a fun one. Swings with the happier rioja notes, less blue.
  19. Wasn't Andy also meant to bring Heston? :pout:
  20. motor city shouldn't be that bad on a thursday eve
  21. Schielke, Your sig reminds me of the time I spent in Portland and was friendly with the bass player LeRoy Vinnegar, RIP. (Do you know the Eddie Harris tune Compared to What? that's he) Anyway LeRoy and the drummer Dick Berk were tight for a while; at one point they had tentative plans to open a restaurant. I'd pick LeRoy up at the Jazz Hotel where he lived. En route to lunch we'd drive around town in search of site for the restaurant, tentatively called LeRoy's Dick. While surveying possibilities LeRoy and I would also discuss the menu: dick burgers, fried dick, dick creme shakes and on
  22. The memory of their strawberry rhubarb pie hasn't left me since I was last (first) there en route to the summer music fest in 1991. and while i haven't eaten any strawberry rhubarb since, i've often thought of theirs
  23. count me in. i like the Charlie Mingus big band at the Fez thursdays. the beers prolly aren't more than 10, but the cover is. Why not bring Heston ?
