    Wine Storage in NY

Zachys charges $1.95/case/month with a minimum charge of $19.50 a month. They require 48 hour notice to retrieve wines and though the site is in White Plains, (for a fee) Z's will pick up and deliver in Manhattan. While their website seems to indicate that their refridgerated 15,000 square foot New York Fine Wine storage facility may be full I'd ask: CustomerService@zachys.com or (914) 723-5798.

    Regarding WTNs

I imagine that we'd all like to see your notes. How do you have them organized now?
  3. A question: I remember liking the 97 Tapestry as well; thinking that for a Californian wine it was damned potable. But your rating of 92: would that be relative to only other California red blends, or in comparison to red blends from both new and old worlds?

    Happy Dance (WTNs)

During the six months I worked in a wine shop, I had three or four days in which I (just me) sold over $30,000 worth of juice. It was indeed a great feeling to sell so much good wine (in spite of making no commission) but I derived as much joy from from the people who would return to tell me how much they liked the $12 or $22 or $34 bottles I'd recommended. The wine industry is oddly satisfying that way, no?

    Mogador

Agreed, an exceptional little spot. Their veggie couscous draws me back as if it were a lover's ghost. Went with a friend not too long ago who ordered a hamburger (that being the main staple in his diet, plus pizza). Though the burger was too highly seasoned for him, I found it the most memorable of my ten short years in NYC. Quite blew away the others I've had that are *supposed* to be so good, ie Blue Smoke's, the Corner Bistro's et cetera.

  7. That's kind of like saying Miles Davis represents the pinnacle of Jazz or Picasso that of Modernism. Not that they're not good, but the extent to which they've become a sign for something more than the thing itself is sort of sad. Yes, Petrus' reputation is such that it sells for vastly more than it's worth - but that alone makes it kind of a fool's juice. Same goes for Opus One. Today, dare I say, both are more myth than wine. I often found the guys who stormed in for their bottles of O1 and Petrus to be the funniest of the lot and au contraire rather quite enjoyed the opportunity to share the little knowledge I'd gleaned with people who might be curious.
  8. CC: are there any coalitions trying to wrest the A from the BATF or otherwise help US laws and procedures, bureaucracies and heirarchies function better?
  9. Anyone tried the Hump, the sushi bar in the Santa Monica airport? Great ambience, very good food.
  10. Here a good Slate piece by Ed Finn about trans vs. saturated fats.
  11. A friend came over yesterday who sensibly (I suppose) drinks Scotch before dinner, wine with food and (otherwise I'm guessing) beer. He knows I prefer Bubbles to Bud in the Afternoon and thoughtfully brought a bottle of champagne. He had a Scotch. I did my best to be gracious about White Star, but in fact I don't see much point to drinking the stuff. This morning I used it to poach eggs, which worked okay. What do you do with bad wines?

  14. Yesterday's editorial by novelist Roberto Pazzi explores recent tensions between Germany and Italy His characterizations hold for my favorite wines too: individualistic Super Tuscans and expansive Mosel Reislings. Do you agree or disagree:?:

  19. Transfats block the cell membranes through which oxygen and glucose (O2 and C6-H12-O6) must travel to feed each one of a body's cells. However when nutrient-free foods (count naked flour and corn syrup in) flood metabolisms, they impede more than just the transport of sugar and air. Vitamins and minerals, the coenzymes that enable reactions in the digestive system, for one, take longer to arrive. Transfats also compromise the lymph, endocrine and nervous systems. Seems safe to say that one might not want to eat or use only transfats
  20. it is kinda funny that in spite of all the prices and years, cheval blanc becomes such good wine
