  1. you must: go to Hunan Cottage in Fairfield, ask for the Chinese menu, order Shanghai Wonton Soup, small Shrimp with Pea Leaves, Chicken with Yellow Leek or other authentic items and report your findings back to us. I think that this place is in a league of two, with China 46.

  2. On 2/19/05, we attended a private birthday party at Blend in Ridgewood. It did not get good reviews on this site, but I thought that the food was very good and the staff was very attentive. It's worth pricing and give the restaurant a try.

  3. Wine Library has a much better collection of "hot" wines that are recently reviewed by Parker and Wine Spectator. Total Wines in WO has a more pedestrian selection.

If you just want to buy a wine that everyone has, Total Wine is OK. But if you're looking for something collectible or hard to get, I think that you'll find it at WL.

Ditto on the staff's helpfulness at WL.

  4. I recommend Hunan Cottage on Route 46 East in Fairfield. Ask for the Chinese menu. This is a true Chinese experience, like China 46, but closer to our residence. However, I would take a drive to go to either of these.

Also, if you're near West New York, I recommend Oriental Garden, 14 Elizabeth Street in NYC's Chinatown. Great fresh seafood and dim sum.

  5. We have been there twice since our November post and it was better each time. We' ve recommended it to others and have received good reviews.

We ate at Etats-Unis on the Upper East Side this past weekend and we thought that Wish is better. We' re going to Wish with another couple this weekend.

We miss 28, Chelsea Grill, Blue Sky and The Show(food and service lacking at the last one, but it had charm for us). If you want this cuisine to exist in NJ, you have to patronize these places.

If you like New American food, this is as good as it gets in Northern NJ. We ate at Fascino in its first week--if that was Rookie of the Year 2003, this is R-O-Y for 2004-5. Try it!

  6. We were there at least two times before, although I am sure that they did not know us. The restaurant business is a hospitality business. We are happy to revisit restaurants where the food, service or decor is a little lacking if we are treated well.

If I did not return the next day with the gift certificate, the restaurant would just run my credit card. We live nearby and I pass it on my way to work. I don't think that I was asking for a big incovenience from them. If they don't want to give me a break, there are plenty of other places to eat.

  7. We went to scalini fideli in Chatham about 5 years ago. We forgot to bring a gift certificate that we intended to bring. I asked the maitre d' if he would take an imprint of my credit card and hold onto it until I brought the gift certificate the next day. Then we could adjust the bill to credit us for the gift certificate. He said no, I would just have to pay the bill. We've never been back, but we've spent thousands at other restaurants in Chatham and Madison.

  8. We ate there on day 2.

I had a arugula salad with goat cheese, beets, etc. My wife had a mesclun salad with pumpkin seeds, bleu cheese and dried apricots. Both were good. On the small side for 7 and 8 dollars.

Entrees: I had Grilled Salmon with grits and bok choy. Mrs. had roasted boneless chicken. The salmon was very good-- no fishy or fatty taste and it was hot and cooked to my order (medium-well). The side dishes were not hot.

The boneless chicken was good. It had rosemary on it , which my wife detests, but it was easily wiped off. The Spanish rice pilaf had chorizo and cumin. I thought that it was too overpowering for the dish, but my wife thought it worked.

The salmon was $18, the chicken was $16, very reasonable.

I think that this place could be very good in a month or two as they work out the kinks. The staff was friendly, the chef personally talked with us and there was a positive vibe. Parking is tough, but doable.

Try it if you like Montclair restaurants but live in or closer to West Orange.

  9. my wife and i had the buffet lunch here on Sunday afternoon. this is the best indian food i've had in NJ.

we've enjoyed udupi village in montclair, but it's limited because it is vegetarian.

an old friend at a nearby table said that he enjoys this place, but this was the first time he's seen it crowded. They deserve to do well here.

if you like indian food, you should try this place. Not only was the food good, but the decor is pretty and the service is friendly.

Highlights: Lamb stew, spinach croquettes, mango ice cream.

  10. We tried Monster Sushi in Summit. It has a nice atmosphere, but I did not think that the sushi was particularly good. The rolls were too big to eat easily, Super white tuna sushi was tasteless, the salmon, not particularly flavorful.

Best recent sushi: Samurai in Millburn, old standby Sushihana in Montclair.

I have a feeling that there are places in NYC that are a lot better than NJ.

  11. I had lunch there with my father. It is huge! The sushi is fresh and the variety is amazing.

I thought that the sushi on rice was sliced very thinly and had a lot rice. However, one cannot complain...I just ate the fish and left most of the rice.

Incidentally, a sign on the table says that anyone who wastes food gets a 30% surcharge. I doubt that this is enforced, but watch it!

I thought that the hot food was not as successful as the sushi-type food, but the BBQ pork and medium-cooked beef teriyaki were good. Also, there are many interesting, Asian-inspired salads.

I had fun, but there's a lot to eat and I wouldn't want to go here too often. It looks like there is a Thai/Malaysian buffet in the same mall. Weight Watchers may want to open a branch in this mall next.

  12. Well, we returned to Lulu's after a year to give it another try. Our sentiments are the same as last time.

We ordered the spinach, gorgonzola, pear and walnut salad, but we asked for a substitute for the raspberry dressing. The waitress suggested a balsamic vinaigrette and the salad was very good! We have hope!

. By the way, the waitress was superb. She recited every special (and price!) from memory, which is impressive and shows effort. Of course, I can't remember anything she said and I would much prefer it if restaurants would just print this information on a sheet of paper and put it in the menu. I guess most restaurants want to trick people into ordering more expensive specials.

It was not the waitress' fault, but the service was too fast. The salad and entrees came out within less than a half hour.

In the interest of science (or by sheer stupidity), I order the same fish stew that I ordered last time I was here which I did not like. I did not like it this year for different reasons. The tomato sauce is sickly sweet! My wife thinks that this is from fennel, but I did not see the spice or the vegetable in it. The fish pieces were fine, but the sauce rendered it inedible.

My wife had red snapper. I tasted it, also. It was stiff, dry, tasted fishy (and those are its good points). The waitress said it was fresh when she read the specials, but I found this impossible based on its rigid, fishy state, unless it was just so overcooked. I don't know if you can get fresh snapper in NJ, it may all be previously frozen. However, we have had good red snapper and this was not.

We skipped dessert. We know when to quit, I think.

The surprise of the evening was that this place is jam packed with patrons. God bless them. Many better places have closed for want of customers.

  13. We ate at La Famiglia in Bogota and I must say that I enjoyed it for what it is. It is a middle-of-the-road red sauce Italian restaurant. It's no Babbo, but the service was good, it's BYOB (which we prefer), the dishes were correctly prepared and the prices were very fair.

I had Eggplant Parm with linguine and a complimentary salad for $9.95. That can't be beat outside of a pizza joint. A comparable red sauce Italian in our town is charging $14.95 for meatballs and spaghetti!

Again, not haute cuisine, but casual, good and a value.

  14. We had another great meal at Fascino on a Wednesday night. Easier to get in than on a weekend.

Fascino was crowded, but we passed a slew of empty restaurants. The light were off at Liberte; does anyone know if they are still open?

I had a Parsnip Puree soup. It was very good. Topped with croutons with pesto. Great with the never-ending cold winter.

My wife had an arugula salad with portobello mushrooms and shaved cheese. Great combo!

For an entree, I had the Chicken breast with escarole and addictive polenta fries. The chicken was moist. This shows me the skill of the chef. It's hard to keep the breast that moist.

The other entree was a Niman ranch pork chop. Very good and the cherries with it were a good compliment.

Anthony, Ryan' brother and maitre d', is very nice to talk with. These guys are running a great restaurant in terms of food and service. We haven't been disappointed in any way yet (and if we ever are disappointed there, they would fix it!). These guys are young, but they realize how important it is to make a personal connection with their customers. We will be happy to come back and to recommend this restaurant.

  15. I saw a bumper sticker that said "Eat Right-Exercise Often-Die Anyway." I 'm not so sure that Atkins is a healthy way to eat. However, I do enjoy eating at Corso. The suckling pig is a good choice if one is watching carbs.

  16. I am sure that it was not tuna and the manager was very frank in admitting that it was not tuna. He said that he would ask his fish purveyor for the literal name of this fish. It was triangular-shaped and it had a dark, tough skin on one side much like swordfish, but it was softer than swordfish. It was also milder and not as oily as swordfish. I enjoyed it, but I do like to know exactly what I am eating. I will press them for an answer next time I go there and post it.
