  1. Spot on coverage of the event, Daniel. We met Jack McDavid, one of our Food Network icons, and he was friendly and gracious. As Daniel mentioned, his food was very good, also. Overall, the festival was entertaining and worth attending.

We were mystified as to the location of the food made by the festival competitors. It did not seem available for sale. Wouldn't this be the point of the festival--to have the public sample the competitors' food? Perhaps someone could explain this.

As a child, my family frequented the Boardwalk and Convention Hall area of Asbury Park. It was shocking to see how deteriorated it is. It looks like a bad science fiction movie. We thought that the town is on the way up, but it has a long way to go.

  2. We ate at a charming new French bistro on Friday night 7/15/05. We noticed it listed in Rosie's 7/13 update, so we called for a decsription, it sounded good, so we made a reservation.

This place is on Millburn Avenue across from Oksenhorn Jewelers and the Post Office.

I had a lump crab with mango appetizer (a special). Very refreshing, tropical and light for a hot summer night. The crab was generously apportioned. My wife had a goat cheese palladiere (spelling?), which was goat cheese, sauteed onions and oven-dried tomatoes in a pastry crust. Very tasty.

Our entrees were chicken for me and duck for my wife. Both were very good.

Our waiter was young and while he admitted to inexperience, he did a very good job. He was attentive and he was working hard. We recognized another waiter from Le Rendez-Vous in Kenilworth. He told us that his brother was the former owner of that restaurant and that the chef here was from France. No surprise , the food was very good.

Our only complaint was that the restaurant was very hot. They had two upright, rotating air conditioners, but they were not enough to do the job. They are only open for 12 days, so hopefully they are considering how to solve the problem.

Finallly, the prices were fair (chicken-$17, duck-$21) and it's BYO. It reminds us of Le Rendez-Vous and The Show, but the prices are lower and the food is better.

    We recommend it!

  3. we ate here tonight. previously, we enjoyed the food. however, tonight there was a new menu and, it seemed to us, a new and less talented chef.

my wife's chicken on the bone was stringy and inedible. my wife did not complain and she intended to just write it off as a bad experience. however, the waiter noticed that she didn't eat much and he offered her something else. since we were done ( i bailed her out with some of my dinner, but it wasn't much better), she declined a new entree. The waiter gave us a coupon for a future visit.

the waiter could not have been nicer, but the food was markedly worse than in our previous visits. is there a new chef? i'm hesitant to return.

  4. ditto on the last comments. we like wish, but its largely unoccupied during the week. giotto, a couple of miles away, a little cheaper and Italian, was packed on a monday. i wonder if the owners can even figure out why. try wish if you like 'new american . '

  5. we ate there on 5/13. we called at 6pm and asked if they had a table for 2. Evan was very accomodating and said come on in and we'll seat you.

the appetizers were a grilled caesar salad and a special salad. Both very good.

we had a salmon and snapper entree. we've had somewhat better fish, but the side dishes with the meal were great.

    treated nicely&good food&good service&funky plates and bowls=a good experience.

  6. How hard would it have been for the staff to send your table complimentary calamari? I never understand why business owners want people to leave with a bad story instead of a good story. For a few bucks, they could be heroes, but it almost never happens.

We went to Fascino on its first weekend. The air conditioning did not work and we were very hot. We received free desserts. We've been back many times, our friends have gone, etc. Fascino gets it. Besides the great food, they treat their customers very well.

We were treated badly at TF a couple of times, we let some time go by and I think that they changed ownership or at least the staff and we gave them another chance and we were glad that we did. But this story is disappointing.

  7. The traditional apple pie from Cait and Abby's in Millburn was very good. It was not goopy, which is my major criticism of commercial pies. We also had a blueberry crumb pie. The crumb topping and crust were very good. The blueberry filling did qualify as goopy, but that's hard to avoid with blueberry.

Kudos to Rosie for the recommendation. Next time, when we have a little more time to work with, we'll try Betsy's recommendation. Thanks!

  8. we are going to my sister's house. my wife is an accomplished baker. however, she needed to go to the hospital and receive medical attention due to an apple cutting mishap while making an apple pie for a previous dinner at my sister's house. We are discouraging her from a recurrence.

  9. I recommend Sushi Hana in Montclair. Also, there's a good place in Fairfield on Rt.46 near Hunan Cottage and the auto auction. You may want to tell the sushi chef that you are a rookie and see what he recommends. If you get a friendly chef, you'll have a fun and educational time.
