  1. By this logic, we could also say that if you get the urge, you could urinate in the corner rather than use the rest rooms... But, have no fear, New Jersey will be joining the list of smoking banned States (listed above) and the over 300 American municipalities that have banned smoking in restaurants
  2. Yes, it's right by the RR-- nice French, probably the best Frisee salad I've ever had-- a work of art!! (Can't believe Zarole is booked already!)
  3. Zarole or Latour in Ridgewood are excellent destination choices; Ridgewood is only 5 minutes from Glen Rock. Zarole 20 E Ridgewood Avenue 201-670-5701 Latour 6 East Ridgewood Avenue 201-445-5056 We have discussed these places extensively in the past. Good food, great ambience at each of these. Terrific special occasion choices.
  4. Underrepresented on that list are the 1 Million people of Bergen County... (except for Wild Ginger, which puts out 2 tables on a narrow sidewalk) Among the ones I can think of in Bergen: Fratelli, Ridgewood Thai Chef, Englewood Andiamo, Haworth Jackson Hole, Englewood Trattoria Terrana, Bergenfield Pasta Amore, Piermont From the latest weather forecast, however, this wnter-that-never-ends might be lasting well into May!!
  5. Hard Grove Cafe has a full bar, and the best Mojitos!! A really fun place with terrific Cuban food!! It's in Jersey City, still in the Hudson County area you are looking at... Did you check the link to the web site above?
  6. I hear that Hard Grove Cafe in Downtown Jersey City has excellent Cuban cuisine... and the best Mojitos north of Miami!! Here's the web site: Hard Grove Cafe Web Site
  7. I think there was a recent extensive bistro thread... (Started by moi!! )
  8. I just love that; it's like the Yogi Berra-ism, "Nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded!!"
  9. Yes, but the food is TOTALLY different at the 2 places. Thai Chef has some French overtones in its food-- also the ambience at TC is about 25 times nicer than Kratiem...
  10. Well, Pan, I can't say that I was recommending the place-- I actually prefer the more modern style of bistro in the fashion of Le Madeleine, for example... However, I was there once, and I remember the food was rather tasty (lots of those sauces!) and the proprietor is quite nice-- the only thing really troublesome is the decor, which is a flashback of 40 years ago-- a bit of faded glory (like Venice?) Also, the place basically is only pre-Theater, at 8PM they are ready to put the chairs on the tables...
  11. Oh, OK, that's what I meant; same address; incidentally, we can also add Jerry's Osteria to Jason's list of raves that went under!!
  12. Actually, it's apples and oranges comparing it to those places. The food is a unique blend of French/Thai, the dishes are arranged quite beautifully, and the ambience is about 50 times nicer than Saigon or Wondees. In the several times I've eaten there, the average price came to about $35PP including tip; also, that end of the parking lot has always been half-empty at dinnertimes. I look forward to when the alfresco area is open in the warm weather!!
  13. Actually, I disagree. I think the location is quite good. Thousands of people pass by every day that go to the ShopRite, a lot of free advertising that way. Also, a good parking situation. The outdoor platform for dining in good weather is the nicest of any restaurant for miles around. The food is good, the prices moderate, and the decor is beautiful I think TC needs a good PR person-- they should be doing better than they are...
  14. Jason it's all your fault! Everytime you rave about a restaurant, it's like a supernova-- it soars up and then fizzles, e.g. Kratiem, and also Felice in Oradell!
  15. After all the fanfare, this place seems to be on its last legs. Every time we drive by the place is empty, or nearly empty. (Dinnertimes) You can see right in because of the large full windows. Frankly, after an umpressive meal here last summer, I am not surprised. Actually, I thought the place was much less upscale than the impression I got from Jason's review. The sister restaurant, Thai Chef, is quite a bit nicer and more comfortable, and the food is much better there as well. This place should be doing a lot better, but it is always empty-- and Englewood is a restaurant town.
  16. Is Segreto in Tenafly the new incarnation of Jerry's Osteria?
  17. YES on all accounts!! ← Wow, that's a lot of cooking equipment!!
  18. You haven't mentioned how the hot dogs will be cooked-- grilled, deep-fried, or "dirty-water"?
  19. FG, what did you expect from Zagat? I wouldn't have even given it the credibility of posting its Top 10; As has been discussed ad infinitum here, almost nothing about Zagat is credible.
  20. Actually, the reason there are so few old-school French restaurants in NY is that the style is basically passé, IMHO. In France the trend is also away from these type places to a more modern, bistro-like approach. One of the holdovers from a different era, that hasn't changed at all in 40 years, from the food to the decor, is a little place called Pergola des Artistes, run by a family from Normandy. You will get classic dishes here at very low prices. Even the atmosphere is from the 60s!! Pergola des Artistes 252 West 46th Street 212-302-7500
  21. Oh, yes, of course... And wasn't the former President of Peru from Japan?
  22. What is a "Chinese-Peruvian"?
  23. Stopped in at Flor de Mayo on Amsterdam and 84th today to get a rotisserie chicken; I was surprised to see that the menu was about 90% Chinese, with an all-Asian staff. The Chinese menu looked like any other UWS Chinese restaurant/takeout. Where did the Peruvians go?
  24. The real point of this thread was that many of us, including me, enjoy the French pan-fried steak preparation. Don't any other Egulleters also enjoy the pan-fried steak to be found everywhere in France?
  25. I was never suggesting Courtepaille as a destination. It was just an example of an American-type prepared steak in France. I was letting anyone who didn't know and had a craving for steak, to be aware that what they will be getting in a typical French restaurant is a pan-fried variety. I happen to enjoy it prepared this way, particularly because it is so different from what we get here. Some, however, like my friend that I mentioned above, will take great umbrage at this preparation and be quite disappointed.
