  1. I went for the first time last Saturday. I was impressed with their menu and had a good experience overall. My favorite dishes were the scallop appetizers (wish I would have ordered the braised rabbit) and the duck breast entree. Both were executed very well. I had heard a lot about the 8-hour pork roast but mine was a little dry, as was the veal. Nice place down in the Crossroads. I'd definitely go back.
  2. This is the best restaurant in KC right now. Jonathan is so dreamy.
  3. I like how bluestem always asks me if I have a reservation when I go in for brunch. I always say no and they seat me right away anyways. My buzz immediately returns after one bloody mary and I sweat while I stuff my face with eggs benedict or chicken livers.
  4. You don't think my review was grounded in reality? Interesting.
  5. I ate at Nonna last Friday for my anniversary and the food was excellent. Simple, fresh Italian dishes with high quality ingredients. Everything was perfectly executed and the chef tries to make as many things as possible in-house. The salumi was outstanding. I highly suggest this restaurant to everyone.
  6. I'm pretty sure my mom got some at the Mediterranean Market at the northeast corner of 75th and Metcalf.
  7. Nonna This guy has quite the pedigree. How exciting for Dallas. Brief review from a blog
  8. Which of these KCK places has the best combination of atmosphere and food? I'm looking to branch out from the Boulevard in terms of quality of food but also to sit around and have a couple margaritas.
  9. Thanks! The American meal was in 2002 so Celina was already there. I can't tell where I've eaten the other four years. I just know that the two I just had were incredible and will definitely stay with me. The Justus meal took us about three hours. Four of us had cocktails and then shared four appetizers and two entrees: beef carpacio, foie gras terrine, mushroom soup, endive salad, pork two ways and lamb shoulder. Then we had sorbet, port and coffee. At three hours, I found it relaxing but didn't think that it was unreasonably long. ue, I'm getting ready to bump the KCK Mexican food thread. Check that if you get a chance.
  10. P.S. Sorry for the lack of detail. I may give a more detailed review at some other point if I have time.
  11. No problem. I did get the pork two ways and it was amazing. I was super impressed by the level of execution there. Chef Justus is also a pleasure to be around. He probably came out and talked to us four times during the meal. Those were probably the two best birthday meals since I ate at the American for my 21st. Eating at Cafe Beautiful is something everyone who loves food should experience.
  12. Well tomorrow is the big day. All the Justus pub on here made me willing to make the 45-minute drive on a Friday night with my mother, sister and girlfriend. That means I'll probably miss the party that is partially being thrown in my favor, but I think it will be worth it. (Who wants keg beer after a nice meal anyway?) Saturday, the woman and I are leaving the KU game at halftime to go to Cafe Beautiful for an early dinner, which will also allow us to rest before the MOFRO show at the Bottleneck. Next week I don't have class and will probably try to throw in a dinner at Michael Smith with the old man in between all the Thanksgiving festivities. Anyone have recommendations on what to or not to order for these upcoming meals?
  13. Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. Keep them coming if you have any more recommendations.
  14. My good friend just moved to Houston for work and he'll only be there for a couple months. I'd like to give him some good recommendations for food. He's not super adventurous but he's working on it. He's started to eat more upscale and ethnic food with increasing frequency but at heart he's really a cheeseburger, Mexican food, pizza, and BBQ kind of guy. He'd probably appreciate a good dive bar or sports bar for watching sporting events. Also, some recommendations for nice restaurants and cocktail bars for when his girlfriend comes into town would also be appreciated. He has a car but doesn't care a whole lot for Houston traffic. Still, he probably wouldn't mind driving for something really special. I believe he's on the other side of 610 from Memorial Park near the Galleria. Thanks in advance for any help.
  15. Eh, no banchan. It's counter service and really more like fast food. I wouldn't recommend this place if you're really into Korean food. I'm sure there are better places. This place just happens to be near my mom's house and super fast. Speaking of, what are your favorite Korean places in KC?
  16. Am I crazy or is this not bad for fast food? Keep in mind that I haven't had a ton of Korean food and it all tastes great to me but considering how fast and cheap it is, I've enjoyed both the spicy pork and the bi bim bap I've had there.
  17. Il Vicino is good but it's also a chain, as is the excellent Dewey's. I'd also throw in Blackthorn. If you go there, make sure you get there early and don't mind waiting an hour or more for your pizza.
  18. The best restaurant in St. Louis is actually four hours west in Kansas City, but... I've had great meals at Sidney Street and 1111 Mississippi. Try Aya Sofia for Turkish/Mediterranean food. www.saucemagazine.com is a great source for information on St. Louis restaurants.
  19. I'm looking for sausage making supplies such as curing salt and hog casings. I'd prefer to give my business to a local place rather than order online. Anyone know of a place?
  20. Score one for Johnson County.
  21. I went to the lounge on Friday for happy hour and my friend and I were the only people in there. That was really surprising because the food was excellent and reasonably priced, as were the drinks. It looked like the dining room was only 2/3 or 3/4 full. I hope that's an anomaly. KC better support this place. On Saturday, my friend who has lived in San Francisco for a few years, was in town with his girlfriend. I sent them to Bluestem and they said it was better than any meal they'd had in SF. They couldn't stop thanking me for the recommendation. Keep in mind they're students and probably haven't been to all of the finer restaurants in the Bay Area, but I still thought it was a tremendous compliment.
  22. Seven of us ate at Pizzabella last night before the Wilco show and loved it. I tried the previously mentioned crispy brusselsprouts with the hazelnuts, leek pizza and also the potted pork and green apple crostini (which was just OK, a little bland). They have a lot of regional Italian wines that I hadn't heard of. Overall it was a great experience and I'll probably go back.
  23. My parents are divorced and I have a girlfriend so that probably means three meals for me. Every year, I go someplace I haven't been before, so here are some places I haven't been that I've been wanting to go to: Justus Phillips Chop House Michael Smith Cafe Beautiful Cafe Des Amis Em Chamas Capital Grill Vote for 3!
