  1. sigh. quite factually, they have a bar area in the main dining room that's non-smoking. this is hardly a challenge anymore.
  2. i'm really shooting from the hip here, but i'm pretty sure that Blend in Ridgewood is non-smoking, and i think they must have a bar with TVs and whatnot. http://www.blendbar.com

agreed. personally i don't get too hung up on price tag, especially when dealing with the level of food that hemant is producing. however, i thought the wine pours were a bit on the skimpy side, and i wasn't all that impressed with the wine by the glass selection. on that point, i would have a harder time claiming "good value."
  4. yo homes, check it. from what i understand, madison and parsippany are related, and montclair is slightly removed. although, i think *you* told me that, so i'm not sure where i heard it.

i think "good value" is relative. but at 200+ a couple, it's not a cheap date.
  6. the chance of seeing his ass single handedly keeps me from watching CSI:Miami. likely meeting a friend somewhere between NYC and parsippany for dinner tonight. we'll eat anything, and still like decent wines-by-the-glass, and bar dining is also fun with a friend. the obvious answer is An American Grill, but i'm open to suggestions. off the top of my head i'm coming up with: AAG China 46 (i don't mind bringing wine here) that new thai place out between 46 and 80 by CD World...something "River" i think. (BYO???) that german place out in parsippany (Top Notch?) that german place near/in montclair (Top Notch?)
  7. we're not going to tell you.
  8. i'm trying to figure out how the "keep it real" comment applies, or what the implication was. i think bpearis' original post about the salt was meant a bit tongue-in-cheek anyway. well, maybe not tongue-in-cheek, but something anyway.
  9. likely somewhat of an exception as i don't know of any liquor stores in bergen county that sell before noon on sunday. although i don't know of a place that sells JD and towels and cookies. sounds like my kind of place though. again, the bergen county blue laws keep truckin' because of the desire of many to keep traffic down. traffic due to liquor sales is probably not too serious a problem. i'd say that if it were, bergen county would have far bigger problems.

    Klong

i see tamarind as in ingredient in many many pad thai recipes. right or wrong. as far as the glow, i assumed it was either or both tamarind and paprika, which seems to make an appearance in many recipes as well. klong's larb is very good, though it's made with kaffir leaf (and chicken), which i don't normally use. overall the food is expertly balanced, and not very spicy at all. i suppose if you want something spicy you'll have to really force the issue. chopped chilis in vinegar are served as a condiment if you ask, though. they're plenty hot. stylistically i'd compare klong to pam's, but not necessarily to sriprirahaphahi. all are good in their own right and seem to excel at certain styles. klong's should certainly do well, even though Holy Basil is right up the street (and quite good in my experience as well). and a 4.50 glass of sauvignon blanc from chile can't be beat.
  11. rosie keeps up with this stuff here. looks like quite a few BYO places opening up over the last few months. perhaps openings are a sign the economy is turning around a bit. or maybe everyone is just quitting their day jobs and giving it a shot.
  12. you can indeed buy alcohol in bergen county on sundays. as suggested, this law has very little to do with religion, or the government's desire to make sure that people selling shoes get at least one day off a week , but rather it's an attempt to keep the traffic down in an area that is by most barometers much too congested due to its many retail outlets. bergenites have been arguing the pros and cons for years, and i, for one, like the "law." it should be noted that if you need batteries on sunday, you can buy batteries at many places. the law has so many loopholes and exceptions that i've never found myself on a sunday wanting for anything, except for maybe shoes, which i could drive 20 minutes in either direction and buy anyway.
  13. now this is what i'm tawkin' about. thanks!

    City Hall

i ordered a burger at dinner within the past few months without any special anything. is this something new?
  15. can i safely assume that this place be BYO?
  16. it's almost tuesday. i'm looking for someone low-key and not-too-challenging tonight, as i'm still tired from the weekend's activities. maybe some place around rt 4 in bergen county somewhere. should i bother trying that italian place on rt 4 west again? (a "tuscan grill" of some sort)
  17. Brass Rail in hoboken won out. they're serving a "small plates" menu. i'll try to find one of the 2 current threads on this and update. or not.
  18. you got me thinking of terraza's, which i think might be the winna. i gotta say that they have some pretty damned good pasta at that place.
  19. those people might consider that you generally ignore me when i'm there, as Sienfeld reruns are far more entertaining. special treatment my ass.
  20. This is depressing. From P&O's website for whites by the glass: Whites Kritter Brut Blanc de Blanc.....4.75 Estrella Chardonnay.....3.50 Georges Duboeuf Chardonnay.....3.75 Hogue Cellars Chardonnay.....5.00 Chateau St. Jean 'La Petite Etoile' Fume Blanc.....6.00 Glen Carlou Chardonnay.....6.50 Kunde Chardonnay.....7.00 Pernand-Vergelesses Chardonnay.....7.50 6 chardonnays. out of 7 non-sparkling whites. WTF?
  21. i'm actually considering your previous suggestion of Park and Orchard, although i've always felt the food there is just terrible. at least i won't have to bring a Rolling Stone or Spin to read, as the wine list could keep me busy for hours.
  22. hmmm. i have no idea. it's basically on the south east corner of the mall. if that means much. what i *do* know is that it's thursday, which is kind of like tuesday, and it's almost time for dinner. i'll be doing my lonely-dinner-routine tonight, and i'm accepting recommendations for something that i might like in northern jersey. refresher: i like eating at the bar. i like wine by the glass. i don't like too fancy. other than that, pretty much anything goes. hell, if i leave now i could make it out to Lou's by 7 pm.
  23. those are really really beautiful pictures!
  24. can i use that as my avatar? mmmmm.
  25. am i the only one that thinks that champagne would go well with this?
