  1. there's a new place in hoboken called "hoboken thai" (i think!). it's on hudson at 1st street. stopped in for lunch today. nothing notable unfortunately. decent tom yung koong. passable fried rolls, although they seemed to be stuffed with something resembling pad thai of all things. pad thai as a dish on its own was near flavorless. i appreciate light and crisp pad thai, but this seemed to take that notion to the extreme. perhaps better suited as a summer dish at this particular restaurant. grilled beef salad served in an overly sweet and all-too-common sauce, with some sad looking iceburg lettuce. no larb on the menu. the place has a cool little vibe going, with tables places sparsely around the dining room, and a counter overlooking the kitchen. however, on my one visit, the counter was filled with newspapers and other stuff, which sent a clear signal to me that they just aren't trying very hard. what a shame as they obviously dropped a good chunk of change in the place to remodel it. they fancy themselves a seafood restaurant, boasting "fresh seafood delivered daily." i didn't have any. it's nice to have another thai in hoboken, but it seems that it would be so easy to open a standout place instead of a mediocre restaurant. i'd be interested in others' comments on this place. 22 bucks for the above and 2 sodas before tip. it appears to be BYOB.
  2. additional commentary on anthony david's can be found here.
  3. i think tofu is one of the most important aspects of pad thai, to use that dish to bolster our collective thought. when there's not enough, it is missed. when it's there, you find yourself enjoying the dish more (well, i do anyway). people who make proclamations and blanket statements like "i don't like tofu" probably don't like much. no where's my damned soapbox when i need it.
  4. texture is more important than following rules. rules are for tourists. nicely done. larb.
  5. please note that from this moment on a fine of 10 dollars per stupid question will be assessed.
  6. restroom attendants? oy. didn't this go out about 25 years ago? cross one more place off of my list. i just can't deal with that.
  7. the cover was another 12 bucks. just kidding. of course it did silly.
  8. what, like a hefty bag? should i get the "lemon fresh" scented bag? how bout this: 17 bucks and i don't have to think about it ever again.

daniel the man? or daniel the restaurant. the distinction should be made. but clearly, the author of that comment is handsome and charming. i've been to db moderne perhaps 4 times. i had the burger the first time, as you almost must, and then again when i visited with another egulleter who was excited to try it (perhaps she can throw in her perspective). i think we both enjoyed it, but as some have suggested, i probably won't go back just for this dish. 2 fish dishes that i sampled, however, were stellar, and i'm looking forward to an excuse to return.
  10. ok, so this container i bought today cost 17 bucks. but it's really quite special. you should see it.
  11. i've always wanted to try that restaurant. i've been intimdated for some reason. the fish at matsuhahahas is very freakin good. it's the only place in this area that i can find sashimi grade (yes, marketing term, whatever) fish. do you know of any others nockerl?
  12. remind me...what's a w4?
  13. when you say you need a tax id # to get in, they don't cross reference it or anything, right? or do you need some sort of proof you're in the restaurant industry. bueller?
  14. yeah, yaohon rules. that place on kindermack didn't smell so hot, so i probably won't run back. i'll try bergenfield. thanks for the suggestions. went to chef central today. wasn't a madhouse. was looking for a vessel in which to brine me turkey, but they didn't have anything. luckily the Container Store about .5 miles (or 20 minutes) up 17 had a bunch of food-grade plastic thingies. that's a cool little place for foodies as well.
  15. i haven't been there lately. what asain places do you know of in bergen, with the exception of those korean joints and the thai place in hackensack? do tell.

    a tasty piece of marketing.
  17. is that the place whose sign you can see from route 80? i've always been curious. what kind of stuff do they have? as far as that "international food warehouse," i think it's completely lame. the produce is not notable, if it exists at all, there is an embarrassing lack of asain foods, and it's not all that big unless you want to buy cheap t-shirts and junk like that. and it's ugly. it's a non-entity when compared to the place in jersey city.
  18. don't get me started on this pathetic excuse for an international food warehouse. it's a joke, imho.
  19. hey, listen guys, i *love* ho-ho-kus. i sorta live there. but you gotta admit, that's one helluva silly name. which was my point.
  20. what's wrong with these reviews? they seemed honest enough to me. was it use of full sentences that pisses of some people? the review of cinque figlie seemed fair enough. not much unlike my experience at chef joe's old place in mo-town. great in some respects, ok in others. so?
  21. i'm with you nick. i am a stone's throw from Bridge in midtown, but, rather than carry stuff home, i'll pay the extra tariff at Chef's Central. and, as we've said, it's like Disneyworld over there for the home cook. it's really spot on.
  22. it's totally expensive, but they have lots o good stuff. i go there all the time, if not just to walk around. check-out is quick and efficient. they have "cooking classes" with some relatively big names every now and again. if you're coming up the parkway, get off at rt 4 east, otherwise you'll totally miss it and end up in ho-ho-kus or something silly like that.
  23. this isn't old school stuff. it doesn't matter how "long" the post is. it downloads, like, immediately.
  24. dodge, why do you bother reading the reviews? you're so pissed off!! LOL!!!!!!
  25. more booze. schmooze 6:30 - 7:30 PM. more booze. more schmooze. more suvir.
