  1. what percentage of the population, or the readership, would you think has any idea what grass-fed beef is. i'm guessing a very small one. this should come as no surprise. ← Probably no less a percentage than those who have any idea what beef even eat or are fed at all. ← you're probably right. i've noticed that people are equally impressed with the phrase "grain-fed beef" as they are with "grass-fed beef." either way the readership is no doubt impressed and thinks these fancy truffles and grain-fed beefs are very novel ideas, and i'm not surprised, or amused, by their ignorance, which is what i was trying to convey, unsuccessfuly i'd think. we, however, all know that cows have been eating grass since they could chew.

  3. i don't think so. everyone has the last word these days.
  4. G&S is still BYOB, no? which might exclude it as a possibility.
  5. it was the butler. in the pantry. my guess?: with the candlestick.

many people who, say, have to work on Thanksgiving, or who aren't necessarily disposed to cooking, would probably disagree. including me, although i don't fall into either of those two categories, and i do use store-bought stock as a base, with quite decent results i'd like to think. surely you recognize that there are lots of different types of people in the world with priorities, needs, constraints, interests and passions different than your own. regardless this seems to have little to do with Rachel Ray or her television shows other than she had a show on cooking t-day dinner in an hour and she's quite popular. and if she got just one person to make dinner for their family or friends well that's probably something more positive than most people have done today.
  7. have you seen the number of posts/reads on the Bruni thread on egullet? oh people love this shit. personally i am *very* interested in what Clap Your Hands Say Yeah think about food critics.
  8. i'm more afraid of the media than i am e coli. "food safety expert"!?!

the phrase "to each his own" comes to mind.
  10. sounds like food might be secondary to comfort, so brady's might not be horrible. at the very least it has 2 big bars, so you will likely find room. other ideas: varka in ramsey. roxanne's would be OK, but i've seen it very crowded. Legal Seafood in the mall. Oceanos in fair lawn. Allendale Bar and Grill in allendale River Palm in fair lawn or ramsey (or whever it is up there) The Mason Jar in mahwah has a good burger. nellie's in Waldwick El Cid in paramus many of which i've mentioned here and on the ol' blog.
  11. i walked in and out of the place at dinner time a few weeks ago, if that means anything. it has the ambiance of a coffee shop, and the menu reads like a typical italian-american place, with "ala vodka" and other goodies that are not horribly interesting. apparently any strengths that it has lay with casual lunch fare.
  12. thankfully i'm "famous" as a good customer. and then secondly from tommyeats.com. i'm surprised he even made the connection with egullet. but yes, that was likely Nick, one of the owners, behind the bar.
  13. tommy ROCKS!!!!. seriously though, i'm glad you enjoyed it. a better addition to bergen county i cannot think of, he said, ending a sentence in a preposition. went recently and had some very good ahi tuna, which i would normally not order. spot on.

i guess i'll be the voice of dissension. recently had what i can only describe as a not-good to horrible meal here. * the grilled octopus was fine. * the grilled lamb loin was OK. too large. i'd prefer a smaller portion for a tapas-like meal. * the fried deviled eggs were largely tasteless and could have used a salty element. any salty element. * the pork belly was sent out cold. and then re-sent out not much less cold. this should melt in your mouth. it didn't. * clams were tough and chewy * the lamb meatballs had a tough, unpleasant consistency and were only saved by the smoked pork product in the sauce. * the barstools are very uncomfortable. * the pours of wine are rather skimpy, even considering the price. the bartender was the only saving grace (along with the bill, which wasn't quite as much as I expected). she was swamped but serviced us just fine, and seemed to know a bit about the many wines-by-the-glass. won't be returning. edited because i shouldn't try to put thoughts into words before 2 coffees.
  15. not all thai dishes are spicy. i wouldn't worry about it. the waitstaff is excellent and will take care of you.
  16. You, of course, have the more cultured Napa chickens - naturally they enjoy an evening passegiata and no interest in anything scatalogical. I would expect no less. ← my friends' (non-napa chickens), too. not sure what the expectations would be there, however.
  17. my friends' chickens also enjoy walking about outside. i can't help but think that those conditions are preferable than factory farmed chickens' conditions. i'm not sure what "free range" means as a classification, but i have to think it's not entirely a "joke." they do go in at night, as that's when the foxes come out.
  18. the two taxes (sales and income) are obviously unrelated. the argument is ridiculous. what they probably mean to say is "people should tip more because i don't make a lot of money", which isn't a very good argument, and not very compelling. i choose to tip on the tax because the math is easier and i don't mind tipping the extra little bit (20% of 7% of the bill, here in NJ where sales tax is about 7%...which would turn out to be about $1.40 per hundred dollars worth of check based on 20% tipping, hardly worth the second thought).
  19. i saw only cholesterol mentioned. no "etc". "concern" (singular), perhaps. but "concerns"? not in that article, unless i missed something.
  20. i get soaked with wine at lunch at Lotus of Siam every time i'm in vegas. and i'll do it again.
  21. i would go to Grand Sichuan (9/51st) without a doubt.
  22. another negative and nasty article from gawker. they seem to attack differences in people rather than celebrate them. completely unfunny and unoriginal. i've seen more enlightened and entertaining rants on bitterwaitress.com, and that's saying something. i fall into none of those categories. the category i *do* fall into is the "i-don't-understand-this" category: perhaps i'm a stupid asshole, to use verbiage that gawker might, but i think people who work in retail plenty know what it's like to be on the receiving-end of BS. perhaps all of the negatives got confusing for me. that said, i understand the spirit in which it was written.
  23. Perhaps the Hoboken outpost of AHD should be called Pimpin' the Dog?!? ← put a sparkly purple cape and tophat on the superhero cartoon. invent a new item and call it the Snoop Doggy Dog. let the groaning commence.
  24. you raise a good point about the new office buildings downtown. i confess i hadn't considered that aspect of the lunch business.
