  1. Funny, when I read your email today...I am leaving for Barcelona tonight as well, although from EWR not JFK. Alas, I am not going to El Bulli on this trip...was fortunate enough to get in on my last trip in September. It was sooo memorable. This time, I was lucky enough to get a reservation at Tickets, Ferran's new venture in Barcelona, so we'll see how that goes. Enjoy yourself...it's truly one of the more memorable dining experiences you'll ever have!!!

  2. In Nice there are two new great restaurants- Flaveur and Luc Salsedo. Luc is a wonderful up and coming chef. The dining room is run by his wife who is lovely and personable. This restaurant only uses fresh local ingredients (many from their own gardens), is reasonably priced, and is a great find in Nice. Make a reservation at least a week in advance. Then you can thank me later :-)

  3. MOMOMFUKU just OK---MUCH HYPE FOR NO REASON-

So we went to MOMO on Saturday night. The food was ok, but seriously folks, if you want little tidbits of food and overpriced wines, this is a place to go. Sure the foods were put together nicely. Sure the wait staff looked great. But the food was ok at best, the chefs had little or no personality, and the restaurant as a whole was a big disappointment. There was no love, there was no pride...it was just served out there to you. I love tasting menus as much as the next person and have read on this site and elsewhere about the great "value" of this menu. You've got to be kidding. If the total of ALL the ingredients used for our individual meal added up to $10.00 I'd be very surprise. Overall very disappointing and not worth the hype. Back to Babbo!!

  4. I really think there should be a total blog for panned restaurants: Listen everybody has differences of opinion about food tastes, quality of service, etc., but to ignore bugs, and not respond...that should have a blog page of it's own.

The best way to let people know about places like your experience last night..is to do just what you did- WRITE ABOUT IT AND LET THE WORLD KNOW the place sucks!!

  5. We are going for the first time Saturday night for our first anniversary. We are wine lovers; so should we do the $50 or $85 pairing? Don't love beer!! Do you have a choice of seating? If so where do you recommend? CAN'T WAIT!! Also, any ideas of how to get a reso in El Bulli..we are 0 for 7 years of trying!! THANKS
  6. We stay in Trastevere four times a year in a little five room hotel called Relais le Clarisse- Charming neighborhood hotel.....you feel like a local. Walk out into the hood. Street market on via Trastevere every day. Great restaurants within walking distance include Spagetarteria and Augusto. Very local..great food and reasonable!! Leaving Monday and can't wait to go!!

  7. Outdoor garden, dining al fresco under the stars...Awesome chefs choice tasting menu. Chef Isidre Soler is a warm personable man, who speaks a little English, but try sure can cook. On of the bright stars on the foodie scene, this out of the way gem was a find. Summer truffles in a salad, tuna tartare with frest fruits, some AMAZING suckling pig, cheese ice cream (yes cheese), and fantastic deserts make this place a MUST FIND and GO TO in Barcelona. Great, reasonable wine list. 8 courses cost 75 Euro.

  8. So the Abac tasting menu is around E84. It has 9-10 courses and one dish is better than the next. From the tuna to the roast baby suckling pig, it doesn't get much better than this. Super attentive service even though the place was packed. Great wine list and a sommelier with excellent suggestions for any price. Dinner lasted around three and a half hours, so be prepard to linger! One of the best restaurant experiences in a long time.

While we were there, we were told about Can Ravell, which is know as a "Montequeria" or a gourmet store. After doing some shopping, we ended up having lunch on the "chefs table" in the back of the store. Amazing food (very expensive), using top notch ingredients. Lunch was five courses for E70. Included fresh tomato and tuna salad, pasta, veal and fish courses. If you want to eat like a local amongst locals, try this offbeat fabulous place.

  9. I'm pasting in my experience of about a year back, I believe my visit falls just about in between these two rather contrasting reviews..

Judith: I'm sorry to say that my two last visits to Moo in February and April 2006 duplicated your visit. On the latter occasion I was hosting a group of colleagues and friends and the service was totally off any pitch. The waiters, maitre d' and bartenders have the unique ability to act busy whilst achieving and doing absolutely nothing... After 1,5 hours we had received our first appetizer, had been proposed the wrong wine 3 times and had to beg for some bread...

This promoted me to pull the maitre d' aside and politely in Spanish suggest to him that both service and attitude left rather much to be desired, at the same time pointing out the flaws I had experienced on this and former occasions...

The maitre took our point and from there on in the service improved to such an extent that my colleagues whispered whether I had any connections with the mafia..:-)

Alas: The food: Less than inspired, and as mentioned before, its sibling further north provides a far better experience.

Just for the record, we just had lunch with a few chefs from the area, and the word on Moo is basically simple...AVOID this restaurant. For great food in Barcelona, see my new review on Restaurant Abac.

  10. Ah, the real pleasure of Barcelona.....Went to La Clara for lunch. We were the only Americans in the restaurant. Service was done professionally with a flair to make us happy. Specials included small squid, and veggies. Food was EXCEPTIONAL and as I said the service done with a smile. We also shared sausage with garbanzo beans which were tremendous. Great place for lunch and dinner if you want great, local food. Or, sit upstairs at the bar for small plates.

  11. Ate in Moo last night. Had a wonderful table and the waiter suggested the tasting menu. After reviewing options with him, we decided to let him select an "ultimate" tasting menu for us. What a dissapointment. We never saw our waiter again the entire two and a half hours we were there. He never came over to check on his selections for us. Maybe he was embarassed? Courses sat undelivered for many minutes on the waiter station. Came to the table undescribed. I think Moo is riding it's past success. Very indifferent service, just ok matching wines, 120 Euro person was ok, but the whole experience was very very disappoining! I kept thinking that I didn't need to come all the way to Barcelona from New York not to eat anything special. Anyway, we are eating at La Clara for lunch and Abac for dinner tonight. Reviews to follow. Hopefully will be better than last night.

Oh, went to the NY Times rave Cafe Viena for second breakfast this morning. Had the famous flauta d’ibéric sandwich.. For 5.90 Euro...a steal. Don't miss this place right on Las Ramblas!!
