  1. I just went to Arturos tacos this weekend and was really happy with them. The tongue tacos were fantastic. Perfect after throwing down a few drinks. I think they are on Milwaukee and Armitage. 1.80/taco.
  2. My wife and I went back for a second time at TVH. We had a great time. This time we sat at the bar. I recommend this if you have any interest in how things come together. I had a classic martini and quite possibly the best whiskey old fashion I've ever had. Thanks so much! Also, one of the tenders gave us a tip for after drink snacks at Arturos tacos. Bless him for that! They were great!
  3. And as a customer it is so awesome when a courteous, thoughtful employee does everything in their power to help you without making you feel like a moron. Its the type of thing that makes me return to places and tell everyone to go there. Kudos to you!
  4. Hmm, I've been thinking about going after they reopened, but probably wouldn't do it if it was all veg. Nothing wrong with vegetarian meals, but it wouldn't be what I was looking for from Schwa.
  5. That makes sense. The bowl of crushed ice is a good idea...
  6. Pomerol - man have I been getting that one wrong...
  7. People actually ask for ice on the side!?! Wow.
  8. I think I may be too late. I've only been to Cubinitas once but had a nice sandwich and good drink. Cafe Hollander is a new place on downer that has great Belgian beer and some good vittles. Roots Cellar might be good, although I've not been there - but I've heard others like it. Sorry if this was too late. Hope you have a good show!
  9. It gets really fun when you start thinking about inheritance. ***programming jokes turned off***
  10. I really agree with this. I eat faster than my wife, and it makes me feel bad when I end up sitting there with nothing in front of me but a water glass, while she continues to finish her meal. Thanks for that post. Pride in one's work is important regardless of the field. I'm sure we can all take a lesson or two from Mr. Bourillot.
  11. Yikes! I'm pretty sure this thread was supposed to be a place for light hearted venting by servers. I'm not a waiter, but its interesting reading the things that bother them. As a customer, it bugs me when patrons do the cell phone thing. Take your call outside. For some reason people talking to one another is fine, but when you're talking in the phone...ugh.
  12. I personally hate that one, and I don't think it's instructive. I much prefer this Kuitan (Japanese TV drama) episode: http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=iB7fxqlywiI ← Sorry you hate it. I was being sarcastic about it being instructive. I do think its very funny though. Can't please everyone I guess. I am one of those who loves eating sushi with my hands. When I lived in northern Japan, there was a little place by the train station I would go to. I let the chef give me what he wanted. He would place the sushi right on the wooden bar in front of me. He did a great job of varying the prices of the pieces so I was always satisfied and not broke.
  13. I checked my globe. NY is closer.
  14. Took my wife to TVH on friday night. We very much enjoyed it. I'd have said hi, but everyone seemed busy, so I didn't want to mess up the groove. I had the manhattan and the daisy 17. I very much enjoyed the latter. Thanks for great drinks, we'll be back.
  15. Yeah. That vid cracks me up everytime. I like the little cup of salt outside the door too. heh. Glad you liked it.
  16. I'd add another vote to Websters. Really nice staff. Tasting room at Randolph's is nice too. 1. theres a great view upstairs 2. they do cognac flights! Very fun.
  17. Generally, I like this recipe: One part whiskey. Although every once and a while, I'll have an ice cube in it.
  18. If you really want to know how to eat sushi, watch this video on youtube Very instructive.
  19. My wife and I are going to try to stop in tomorrow night. I'll be honest, I'm really excited to try your Manhattan.
  20. Hah! I just can't afford that level of wine, and I don't have a place to store it correctly. From what I've seen of futures the last couple of years, they don't exactly seem like bargains. ← Futures aren't limited to high-end bottles. A number of the more reasonably priced wines I bought during the 03 futures campaign have moved up in price enough that I wouldn't buy them. 03 Branaire (duluc-ducru) and Pontet Canet both sell for around $80/bottle now, I paid $28 and $40 for them on futures a couple of years ago. 2003 Leoville Barton and Leoville Poyferre are both around $150/bottle now and I paid $58 and $49 on futures. Others like Pipeau, Moulin-Haut-Laroque, Cote de Baleau, and La Tour Carnet are selling for five to ten bucks more than they cost on futures, but La Tour Carnet was the most expensive of that bunch at $20. The 04 futures haven't gone up as much, but they also haven't all been delivered yet. I only bought one case of 05 Bordeaux and haven't bought any 06 - I'm not happy about being priced out of the market. Hopefully there will be some good sales down the road so I can stock up on the wines I missed. ← Huh, well thats good to know. I won't just write them off as too expensive then. Once I have better cellaring options, I'll see what I can find.
  21. Great thread. Wine can be an intimidating thing to get into. Once I figured out that its just a beverage and not knowing is not a sin, it got to be lots of fun. Here's mine: I was at a Pinot Noir tasting at my local shop. When they poured a Van Duzer, it was very aromatic. Half to myself (and a little louder than intended) I said, "this smells like my grandma's bathroom." Everyone looked at me like I was nuts. The thing is, growing up, my grandma had this red bathroom where she had some potpourri containing things like roses, hibiscus, etc. It was one of those moments where a smell really took me back. The best part is that last summer I went to Van Duzer while on an Oregon trip and got to tell the wine maker the story. Jim was very gracious and said, as long as it wasn't after your grandpa got done, I'm happy. There, some self deprecating humor - no one can complain.

  23. This thread has made my day. Thanks everyone.
  24. The Chef's choice pix fixe meal is a great idea. I really wish more places did this. I'd make a trip out on a slow night for a good series of dishes for one price. Another idea if you can, partner with a wine store in the area and do thursday night wine pairings. I love going to mid week wine tastings, breaks up the work week with fun.
  25. The one thing every city needs is a good noodle shop. There isn't one in my town (that I know of - if anyone knows a great ramen shop in Milwaukee, pm me). Next time I'm in NYC I'm definitely gonna check this one out. Usually Sapporo East is on my short list.
