  1. I read the book, Heat, and found it very enjoyable and enlightening...I plan to read the New Yorker article but have not done so yet...but guess what debuted today on The New York TImes Best Seller List?? I was delighted to see it there.
  2. Sounds wonderful...have you eaten there...or has anyone reading this? Would love to hear more...Thank you.
  3. thank you for both those suggestions...we go every year but we always seem to eat lobster and I really appreciate other suggestions...will keep them in mind when we go...We used to stay in Bar Harbor but "the quiet side of the Island" suits us much better.
  4. A few weeks ago I asked one of the other WF managers when ...and he replied October...the WF Web site doesn't list an opening date...but it is going to be about 55,000 square feet....WOW!!
  5. We are going to be in Southwest Harbor in September 2006...We are all set for lobster at Thurston's but that is the only neat place we know....PLEASE suggest alternatives any place on Mount Desert Island or even Ellsworth..for good food no matter how simple...
  6. Hi..We are visiting San Diego for a week in January 2007 and staying in Carlsbad. We have eaten at the "stars" such as Pamplemousse and George at the Cove and Bizcocho, etc, etc....This trip we would love to try some lesser known, simpler but really good food...surroundings can be simpler...we love fish, would love to enjoy California fruits and veggies..not Mexican...We know these places exist..it is just so difficult for an out of towner to find them...Please help us...thanks a lot in advance

we actually had both the scallops and the soft-shell crab and were a bit disappointed with the crab since there was so little of it that you could barely taste it...this was one of the few "ordinary" courses of our rntire meal...

Wonderful for you, but what made it so? Please elaborate. ← So glad you had a wonderful experience BBQChef...and Docsconz..in my humble opinion, what made it so amazing was the food, the details, the service...we were made to feel really important and cared about...doted on...several of the courses were etherial..not all..some were just excellent...several were the most amazing food I have ever had...I just read an interesting article in today's Wall St Journal comparing 2 important and expensive NYC restaurants...and the cost was not very different...but the food and the service certainly were...
  10. Hi...Ate at BDV only once and wasn't thrilled..ate at Esca a number of times and feel it has slid a bit from the early more wonderful days...anyone have other suggestions in the Theater District...especially for GOOD fish...thanks...appreciate it...

Have a wonderful time...I KNOW you will...Having eaten dinner there twice, I truly feel this is the BEST meal I have ever eaten and I have eaten in most of the top restaurants in NYC...You will be made to feel very special and if you talk to your Captain about the kitchen, you may be invited there after your meal for a visit. This time we mentioned the cameras and screen that interacts with The French Laundry that we read about here and he invited us to see it...we also asked to take home our chocolates as we were too full to enjoy them and both times they were packed up so we could extend our wonderful experiece into the next day. Is the menu and/or cost any different for lunch? From someone who grew up in Beacon, N.Y.....
  12. Pluckemin Inn here ← thanks a lot for that hint...
  13. Could people please comment specifically about Table 8 in Monclair and the Pluckemin Inn in Pluckemin...I am interested in your experiences there as well as the food quality...thanks...
  14. Hi..The cherries at Costco come from Washington state...and I guess it is cherry season there....
  15. Please tell me more about Table 8...Thanks..
  16. Copper River salmon for $8.99 a pound at East Hanover Costco for anyone who is interested...as well as Driscoll rasberries...enjoy
  17. RANIER CHERRIES....ALERT...just now at Costco in East Hanover...expensive but for the short time they are available, they are the BEST...red and yellow...more sugar than the red variety...really yummy...
  18. Great suggestion...I had not heard about that Web site...Will go there right away..thanks a lot...
  19. Hi Jason..I think American, Italian, French, healthy..I have enjoyed lunch at Lulu's in Livingston....I am delighted the non-smoking ban has been enacted.
  20. Hi..I am a new member and live in Essex County (West Orange) and spend time in Somerset County(The Hills). I love food, really good of its kind, be it simple or haute...I have had some difficulty finding great places locally and so usually go into New York City...However, I know that I must be missing some wonderful food...so please share with me places that take pride in making their own, are not overpriced for what they are and seem to care about their customers..I am looking both for lunch suggestions and for dinner suggestions.....thanks in advance...
  21. What size portion to chef's normally plate for an individual serving? At $23 a pound at WF, the average customer would probably purchase about a pound for a 2 serving. I would think that restaurants get a better price from their fish mongers. I will admit I'm not a huge fan of Doris & Ed's, and the $37 price tag seems a bit high to me. I'd rather go for the three course tasting menu at Nicholas for $55 even though the Copper River Salmon isn't on the menu. Nicholas menu ← I'm also not a fan of Doris & Ed's. Their prices have always been outrageously exhorbitant. We stopped going there years ago because, for what I do consider way out of line prices, we never had anything but an o.k. meal. Wegmans, in Manalapan, had Copper River salmon for the first time last week at $17/lb. ← Sadly, I must share your opinion about Doris and Ed's...The food was just o.k., we felt the prices were very high, and we found that while our waitress was fine, the gentleman in charge did not seem to understand his role of being gracious or pleasant to the guests. In fact, he was so unpleasant that we wrote to the owner, got a pleasant reply but I would not be happy to return there.

I am a new member, so please bear with me. We had a wonderful meal at Per Se a few months after it opened, including a tour of the kitchen and a brief talk with Mr. Keller. We planned to return this past Saturday but we wondered if some of the excitement might be gone since it was not a totally new experience. I would like to thank Tupac for sharing his pictures since this certainly reminded us of our first experience and heightened our anticipation. We are still floating from our amazing evening...Not everything was sublime (not everything was sublime the first time either, but enough was!) but overall, I am so glad we returned and we will again after a period of time has passed. The service again made us feel so special and so important. After dinner, we were again invited to tour the kitchen and see the video camera and screen we had read about here. Chef Benno sent out a signed menu out to our table for us..I guess I am a groupie for chefs of this level. I would also like to add a comment about wines. Much as we know and read about food, we know very little about wines, and our Captain made us feel very comfortable and suggested a wine that was quite lovely and quite to our taste. I must humbly disagree that you should not show your lack of knowledge...no one can be an expert on everything, and part of the job of a good Captain is to steer his customers accordingly. All that said, I would so recommend anyone who adores great food to save up and enjoy an evening here...WOW
  23. We have been visiting Acadia every Spetember for year and we stay on the "quiet side" of the Island in Southwest Harbor. In my opinion, Thurstons is the BEST, BEST, BEST for lobsters...my choice is for soft shell when they have it since I think that is sweeter than the hard shell. Enjoy your trip!
  24. I bought the Copper River Salmon there for the 2nd time on June 8th. The fish was $9.99 a pound the first time(about 2 weeks earlier) and $8.99 last week....and wonderful both times. They told me it is not there regularly, just whenever they are able to obtain it. I also got pieces that were about a pound and a quarter the first time and just under a pound and a half the second...
