  1. Let's wait for the spring when the weather is more accommodating so we can reenact the trek from Manhattan to Brooklyn (or visa-versa)

    Sushi Gari

Good, but somewhat overpriced sushi and particularly brusque service has been my experience with the East Side branch as well.
  3. My favorite tried and true is Etats Unis, although I have no idea how long it's been around.
  4. So when can we expect a Barnstormer BBQ in NYC?
  5. Give us damn near anything other than a foreskin to work with and us gentiles can cut with the best of 'em ← Bris-b-que?
  6. Dim Sum a Go Go has very good dim sum, especially vegetarian offerings.
  7. Their date pudding is also AMAZING. I also like their wine bar across the street.
  8. Just went to La Caridad last Tuesday after our completing our Thanksgiving shopping at Fairway. I had roast pork egg foo young. They still serve great "bad-Chinese food" (retro, Chinese-American, etc.). That's a compliment.
  9. Actually, in the movie My Favorite Year, the lead character Benjie Stone says, "Katherine, Jews know two things: suffering and where to find great Chinese food." There is also a link in eGullet regarding Jews and Chinese Food.
  10. Neptune room was lots of fun, had great seafood starters. However, I think that Esca or Fiamma is a cut above. I guess it depends on where you can get a rezzy.
  11. Jason, I agree with you 100%. There's something fishy about this story, and it ain't the anchovies!
  12. I love Alice's Tea Cup, although some folks might consider it to be a bit too precious. Also, lotsa UWS moms with their kids so the place can get noisy, especially on weekends. BTW, the scones are also excellent.

Sue and I have a Friday nite rezzy, CAN'T WAIT. Will bring the digicam.
  14. I'm a big fan of Cafe Boulud. A bit less expensive than Daniel and in many ways more consistent. There doesn't seem to be a tasting menu, but they do have many wines by the glass. I'm sure that the sommelier would be happy to pair wines to whatever you or your friend order.
  15. If the term "Fancy Mexican" refers to food only, then Itzocan Bistro (1575 Lexington Ave @ 101st St) deserves to be in the mix. However, this is not an upscale dining experience.
  16. yep, you can eat lunch on the tastes. Their lobster salad and whitefish salad are not to be missed.
  17. Empire Szechuan was where I first had cold noodles in seseme sauce back around 1980. The best cold noodles I ever had were sold by a street vendor who had a cart on the NW corner of 62nd and Broadway at about the same time -- maybe '81 or '82. I used to call him "noodle man". I think his family owned the chocolate shop at the corner of 62nd and Amsterdam. Noodle man and the chocolate shop are long, long gone, and as Pan mentioned, Empire sucks. Nothing stays the same.
  18. Anyone remember West Side Storey (95th and Columbus, or was it Amsterdam)? Had glass tiles in front, owned by a guy named Jerry, had great brunch.
  19. Tried last month to get rezzy for multiple tables at Luger, but they couldn't accomodate us, so I cancelled the rezzy at Wolfgang's. Let's pick another night.
  20. Hmmm, interesting that they didn't mention Schneider Vineyards, which makes an award winning Cab Franc.
  21. Some more T'burg trivia. Trumansburg is where Robert Moog manufactured his first commercial synthesizers circa 1964.
  22. I have rezzies for 8, 4, 4, and 4 at Wolfgang's @7:30. Unfortunately, it looks like Peter Luger may be more difficult. I've got a 10 at 1:30. Unfortunately, it looks like that's all I can get at that time. They do have 11:45 (probably too early) and 2:45 (probably too late). Will try them again later today. If I can't get everyone in, we'll try it some other time.
  23. oakapple, I agree completely. Actually, this review made perfect sense to me.
  24. I found it interesting that Bruni chose the negative cardio-cholesterol angle for his review when he very well could have used the positive Atkins-protein angle spin just as easily. Instead of the headline "Eat Up, but Don't Tell Your Cardiologist", the review could have been entitled "Eat Up - A Low-Carb Feast!"
  25. sue and I would also love to walk across the bridge.
