    Dinner! 2009

Tonight I made "Morrocan" chicken and couscous with butternut squash, zucchini, chickpeas, apricots, and preserved lemons.
  3. sure, the pricing is on their online menu from their site http://www.thepiestorenj.com/ So we pre-ordered some pork pies. The pastry was very good, if not a little thick. The filling however was dense and dry. There wasnt enough fat in the mixture, and it was pretty bland. The pies are also larger than the "classic" Melton Mowbray pie, and not .. I'm afraid, up to that standard.
  4. 8. we have service for 8. We only have 6 chairs, so if you're coming over .. bring something to sit on!
  5. Congrats indeed! Was this what you were working on when we meet you in April?
  6. We stopped by here today and made quick friends with Samantha behind the counter. Took home a wide selection of sausage rolls (p."too much pastry"), chana pasty (t. "lots of tomato"), turkey stuffing pie, shepherds pie, steak and ale pie. and a cornish pasty. No pork pies, unfortunately. You have to order them ahead, as they're in great demand. According to Samantha, they're too labor intensive to make every day.
  7. I know! I know! Nutley Wine Shop! http://www.nutleywineshop.com/
  8. My stainless steel jumbo tweezers! I bought several pairs just like these in Italy this year. They're perfect where you would use chopsticks or tongs... and I dont have to poke things with a fork to move them or turn them.
  9. how about a sweet wonton? use a fruit filling and dust with sugar and cinnamon or chocolate after frying?

    First time making gravy

did you skim the liguid of excess fat before you added it to the roux? maybe your gravy didnt separate - it could just have been too greasy?
  11. a dear friend of mine in Ft. Wayne made this recommendation: " http://www.casarestaurants.net/ - Awesome italian, the salad is amazing. Stellhorn Rd location is my favorite, atmosphere wise, but the menu is the same at all of them. " enjoy
  12. We actually loved this combination when we took a class with Maureen Fant
  13. I was at my hairdressers the other day, for a touch-up and injection of local neighborhood gossip. Just over the din of the hairdryers there was an animated discussion of a Whole Foods coming to Clifton, nestled in the complex on Route 3 West and Alwood Road, right next to TGIF. Is there any validity to this rumour? I'd love to expand my grocery options beyond Shoprite-ShopNStop without having to schlep to Montclair.

nakji, we just serve it with plain white. I've found the cardamon rice to compete with the salmon in this dish. Please let me know how yours turns out

Lastnight we made Nigella's Sake Salmon recipe (click me) Its a very simple recipe and one of our favorites
  16. The costco price also includes 2 day shipping. that would certainly make up part of the expense
  17. The one in Palisades Park is on Broad Avenue, above a row of shops (Pharmacy, shoe store, etc) I dont have the name of the place, or the exact address, but here is the google location... I can find my way there in my sleep http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&time...5&t=h&z=18&om=1 *edited - its right over 118 Broad Ave. Yum
  18. thank you weinoo for those suggestions. I'll keep them with my notes for this trip! forgive me ellenesk but have you arranged for a special discount for 2 adjoining rooms at this hotel? I have speficially stayed away from hotel options as I've found the rates to be prohibitively expensive.
  19. Maureen, Thank you so much for responding. Your imput is invaluable! I'm not so concerned with Trastevere being touristy, I just hope that its still tastefully done as to maintain the charm of the neighborhood whist not being over the top commercialised. The property we were looking at is described as being down a "quiet alley" so I hope the noise level will not be an issue. Although, living in NYC, we're quite familar, and comfortable with life's soundtrack. I think we would really enjoy listening to some activity, it would be, afterall, in Italian

    Dinner! 2007

Lastnight I made prawncracker's recipe for goat cheese and red onion tarts I served them with a small steak and a romaine-tomato salad with a balsamic vinaigrette. My family was very impressed
  21. oh sockster! can you walk by Via dell’Arco di San Calisto and tell me what that "vibe" is like? just how small is this hotel you're staying in? I will be travelling with my husband and two 13 yr old girls. We will definitely need 2 bedrooms. Thanks to Kevin72, Frog1879 and Didi Dishi for replying too
  22. Ok, so we're not traveling until April, but I'm starting to start my research. We're planning to stay in Italy for one week, based in Rome. I wanted to know if those familar with Rome can give me an opinion on the neighborhood of Trastevere. We have the opportunity to rent a house on Via dell’Arco di San Calisto. I understand that there are a lot of shops and markets there, as well as some decent restaurants. Once we establish where we'll stay, I'll launch myself in to food and fun in the rest of Rome Thanks in advance!
