  1. Since I don't want my son to have more potato chips at one sitting then he should, I will, as an occasional treat, buy him the ninety nine cent bag. Which, in the past month, has gone up to a dollar twenty nine. Just like that. no explantion given..

    Dinner! 2011

Everything looks wonderful as always, and I want your pulled pork, Bruce. Kim, the last time I attempted to fry without any oil, I set off the smoke alarm! A little oil seems to do the trick.. All butter just smoked too much for me. It was potato pancakes and they didn't brown enough, just like you said! A rare night off, my son's with my sister for a sleepover, I'm having microwave popcorn and an episode of American Dad on the computer. ( Got to sin when I get the chance, you know ) Thinking candy for dessert.
  3. I made the gataux of crepes (Spelling) from the second Julia Child's PBS series of cookbooks. Don't get me wrong, it was wonderful. But Blanching broccoli, matchstick carrots, slicing mushrooms, making the creamsauce, adding the cheese, making twenty four little crepes... needless to say,as good as it was, it was one of those things, took over an hour to prepare, another forty minutes to cook, and it was gone in the blink of an eye.

    Dinner! 2011

Djyee100 Have to tell you, that patty melt, beautiful, just beautiful. I warmed up takeout. It was on of THOSE nights.
  5. Yes, The pineapple is a more "Thanks for coming." At least here in N.E.Ohio. I have always welcomed new neighbors with brownies. Can't go wrong type of thing, who the hell doesn't like bronwnies???? WHO?
  6. Well, this is a "cheat like hell" recipe, but I buy a jar of pickled onions, usually from world market, and eat them. I make sure to save every drop of the brine. When the onions are all gone, I buy a sweet onion, peel, and chop it to about one by one inch squares, and drop those into boiling salted water for about two minutes. Shock them in ice water, drain, then put them in the jar, then into the fridge. I shake them everytime I remember to, and they're usually nice and pickled by day three.
  7. Another vote for Arby's sauce. and the mustard they sell at the dollar store, Koops? that stuff goes on everything. Can't imagine eating a burger, dog, or brat without it. my vegetarian mom loves it on a cheese sandwich.
  8. no, you're right! It was at the sugar off party her uncles and aunts held to celebrate the sap running. wow, this is going to be a great blog.I was so into the little house books that my mother bought me the complete set for a birthday gift when I was in my twenties. Shelby, I always loved your dinner posts and what an adventurous eater you are! I was wondering, did you ever have livestock? Or, rather, is there some reason you don't? Just curious, as I love animals and I'd have a boatload if I could.
  9. I really enjoy my sweet potatos with sauteed apples and onions, and it really is very simple. Bake your sweet potatos to the done/mushy stage, while they're in the oven, sweat some peelied apple chunks and onions in a great deal of butter. Add salt, pepper and sugar. Scoop the potatos out of their jackets into the fry pan, mix in and eat.
  10. Thanks James. my son is eleven, however he is high function autistic, and has trouble concentrating. I am trying to get him to get his cereal, etc. plus, he'd pack himself way, way too much of the goodies type lunch food! your idea is awesome, however.
  11. I love my son beyond all reason, and therefore do not subject him to the prison quality of what the school calls lunch... but packing his lunch is the most monumental pain in the ass of my morning. Why? don't know,it just is, from making his sandwich,to bagging up his fruit, pretzels, cookies, making sure he has milk money,it just frosts me every single time I do it. I tell myself to get over it,and no,I still hate doing it. and, remembering not to run out of change, certain foods, baggies, etc is yet another PITA on shopping days. p.s. I love to cook, truly.
  12. I'm thinking raisin bread, making it the day before, and toasting it on the morning, for a quick, easy breakfast. I made pizza bread today,a simple white yeast bread with the addition of tomato paste, parm.cheese, grated, and finely chopped onion. when sliced and toasted,it really does taste a lot like pizza. I suppose you could add some sort of pizza topping meat, I don't due to having a vegetation in the house.,anyway,I'm thinking about cutting that into squares and toasting as kind of early afternoon snack, maybe with some olives. Pumpkin pie, for sure, especially for the kids.
  13. Mr. Prawn I was going to ask, As a first generation American, what do you do as far as typical English food?
  14. I live with my autistic son, my daughter and step-daughter are grown and gone. My son and I are Jack Sprat and his wife, i.e., I don't care for fruit and I love vegetables, he, on the other hand, eats three or even four servings of fruit everyday (I make sure of that) But I don't care for most fruit. So, when he's away, stands to reason, I eat whole meals of nothing but vegetables. Spinach with cheese sauce, broccoli almondine, califlower cheese, tomato pita baked things, onion soup with the added addition of brussel sprouts and lima beans. I think the whole point is that you eat what your mate/child/roommate doesn't want to eat, and with them not there, it's your chance to indulge.
  15. Yep, Mr. Prawncrackers himself!! I knew before I read anyone else's guess. ( No, really I did. ) He lives in England, and as a first generation American from that land, I really look forward to this one.
  16. Kim, for children like mine, (who are not only children) the little onesize popcorn is a really big deal because a; they can make it all by themselves, and b; they don't have to share with sibs,it's ALL MINE. My mother gave out snickers, reeses and three musketeers this year. I was not home, I took my son. I figured out last night, between my own childhood, having my two kids ten years apart, plus my step-daughter, I have spent thirty five years trick or treating. No wonder my feet hurt!
  17. Thanks for doing this wonderful foodblog. I have to tell you, I'm reading every word, which is more of a testement to your writing than you know- I cannot eat any shellfish in any form, and I'm STILL enjoying this! And I just wanted to quickly say, I remember your blog when your adorable son was a babe in arms. He's still adorable.

    Dinner! 2010

Kim that was a beautiful run of meals and I have to say, and I am saying this to nobody else... I had a period of time where I was out a computer, and on Egullet yours were the meals I missed the most. Tonight, (No pics, but this will change soon) I made my Grandmother's in law baked beans, with onion, slow rendered bacon, brown sugar, and a can of Bushe's baked beans. Did you ever notice that all sins can be forgiven, if you know how to doctor a can of really good baked beans? Since I am American of English heritgage, we had them over toast. Beans on toast.
  19. We like it best, especially in the warmer months, chopped onto a salad of greens with plenty of red onion and cheddar, and a creamy dressing, usually a garlic type.
  20. For me, it starts with the tuna the very best, white albacore, in water, well drained. heat the oven to four fifty. meanwhile, make your tuna salad, dill and sweet relish, finely chopped onion, celery too, and enough mayo to make it nice and wet. salt and peper. heat a skillet and butter the outside of two really nice slices of firm white bread. add cheese of your choice. cook like a grilled cheese, and when brown on both sides, throw in the oven for enough time to heat the tuna and finish melting the cheese. tomato slices, in season, are a great add-on. I am having one tomorrow.
  21. hmm toast english muffins on both sides, butter the cut side. heat the oven to four hundred. line them on the cookie sheet cut side up. cover with ham cuts, slices of tomatos, and bacon. after about twenty minutes, add cheese slices and cook for a few minutes more, til the cheese metls.
  22. anyone else like them "California" style? My friend from there got me hooked. it's the basic cheeseburger, lettuce onion slice, tomato, but the only condiment is thousand island dressing. yummmm
  23. If I show up without my famous potato salad, I'd get shot. Nothing special, just a basic food done right, eggs potatos, mayo, sweet relish, dill relish, a squirt of mustard, and lots of chopped onion and celery. extra good with hotdogs. doing bacon baked beans too. happy fourth for those who celebrate.
