Vancouver/Western Canada Ingredient Sources Topic
JasmineL replied to a topic in Western Canada: Cooking & Baking
When I was a teenager, my aunt brought me some Turkish Delight as a gift from her visit to Turkey. I remember it being un-heavenly. Perhaps it is time to source it locally to give it a second chance. -
I noticed that Risotto factors in to many a menu. It is on the menu at both my reservations.

I will be dining at C and Parkside! Hooray!

Thanks for all the suggestions. My mother has been hunting for a good Tagine for a long time...I think she really wants a pretty, embellished one. I'll definitely tell her about the suggestions here. -
eG Foodblog: Zucchini Mama - A Merry Zucchini Christmas

I walked home from Zucchini Mama's house, picked up some sour cream and an onion and ran home to fry up my precious perogies! Oh man, they were fantastic...if I do say so myself. I can't think of a better comfort food for a rainy Vancouver evening. The beautiful Zucchini Mama and the handsome Ullie made me instantly comfortable. Zucchini Mama had prepped the dough and filling so that my job was to demonstrate the mechanics of perogy making.I won't say too much about that part because it will be illustrated once the photos are posted...but Zucchini was a natural. We had a great chat, listened to some great music and made some great food! The perfect afternoon. -

I don't know the story... or recognize her specifically, but I've certainly seen her sisters and cousins over the years. Lovely lovely poem. it's not just Alberta... we have those huge statues all over the country... I wonder why. I hope we get pictures of the perogy making - and who is this diva? ← The Diva wears sweatpants...I'll tell you that much. -
The Vegetarian Platter at Afghan Horseman on Broadway at Cambie won rave reviews from some of my vegan friends...they ordered it without any of the dairy based condiments.

Oh boy! Look what I found! The link is to an article in BC Business Magazine that discusses blackmarket cheese!

I think it's called King and I and it had a picture of a Playing Card (King no doubt). Is this the one you saw? I think they took over an old Chinese restaurant there but the chinese words are still on the window but I couldn't read them ;p ← That is the place I was thinking of...The King and I. I will have to see if they do take-out. I am always interested in local take-out options.

A new place just opened on Broadway on the block between Main and Kingsway. I believe it is called "The King's Banquet". I didn't get close enough to read the menu. I will report back when I get a better look.

Here is my account of lastnight's visit to habit. I arrived around 7pm with a friend and got a seat right away. The room was about 90% full and I saw no less than 3 familiar faces enjoying drinks and food, the locals all giving it the trial run. I observed that the decor is a fun mix of Canadiana and 70's. My friend said it felt like a very hip cafeteria. The seating was comfortable and we scored a spot by the big windows...perfect for watching the twinkle of snow coming down. The waitress who was very friendly came by with menus and informed us that it was designed for sharing. I ordered a Strong Bow (bottled) and my friend ordered the Bavarian 1516. The service from here on was a little bit slow...but we were not in a hurry so it wasn't anything to have a fit over. We decided to start with the Trio of Dips and homebaked bread (all these names are from memory and are probably different on the menu). The basket of bread contained a n India style flatbread (Puri?) and a triangled and toasted selection similar to foccacia. Two of the dips were a variation on humous, one of them had a strong olive flavour. The other dip was a working of baba ganoush...I liked that one the best. This appetizer was $9. We opted to try the Sweet Carrot and Brie Perogies. I am a perogie snob from years of making perogies from scratch at the now non-existant Perogy's Perogies on Denman. These definitely met my high standards. They were large in size (3 per $10 order) and served with an herbed sour cream. I would have liked them to be a bit heavier on the brie...it's all mixed in with the carrot filling. The next dish we tried was the Buffalo Flatiron with corn torillas and black beans. I believe this dish was about $14. The steak was medium rare, layered between and on top of the beans and tortillas. There was a drizzle of a chipolte dressing and some other condiment that wasn't particularly flavourful but did add some needed lubrication to the dish. Finally, we had the Brownie with nuts and Mocha ice cream for dessert to share ($6). It was a large portion of warm brownie, not too cakey. The single scoop of ice cream was contrasted nicely. I could have eaten one to myself easily...but I'm crazy like that. I was very tempted by the menu listing of Mexican Hot Chocolate and Cookies...but decided to leave that for another day. The bill came to $63 between the two of us...$20 of that being drinks. We left satisfied but not stuffed. I was actually happy that I had already eaten a small meal before I had arrived. Next time I go, I will order 3 entree items between 2 people plus appy and dessert. Pleasant experience all around and since it is so close to home I can see myself becoming a regular...atleast for dessert!

The things that stand out in my mind right now are all items I have eaten on my very brief lunch break: Green Bean salad from Brioche on Cordova. I don't love green beans, but this salad is the bomb-diggity. I might have to have some for lunch today! Shrimp Bisque, also from Brioche. I can barely eat the full sized serving because it is so rich...but every bite is a joyful struggle. *note...I eat at Brioche about 3 times a week and I have never had a bad dish. Deep Fried Cauliflower from Nuba on Hastings. They catered my best friend's wedding and the Deep Fried Cauliflower had the guests stealing from eachother's plates! It's a simple thing really, just cauliflower with lemon and salt...but somehow the results are magic! I have some important dinners scheduled soon...so I'm sure I will have more to add.

I recommend Our Town as well, I used to go there all the time before I hooked up my internet at home. Although, I will say the network was a little tempermental. The coffee more than makes up for it though! They also have wine!

Unfortunately, you have missed it. It was November 9 & 10 at The Landing in Gastown. A. ← I work very close to The Landing and I stopped in for a very brief moment...I observed 2 cheese vendors (Moonstruck and Salt Spring Island Cheese Co.) and purchased a dark chocolate bar from another vendor.I believe there was a bread vendor as well, could be mistaken.

I can not wait until my work schedule is a little less obnoxious so I can join in on Burger Club.

I used to live across the street from the Crime Lab. What was it before Crime Lab, Happy Boolins/All Good Cafe?

I've always been suspicious of 99 cent Pizza. Sure, I've eaten my fair share...but I was drunk or doing penance for a bout of shopping hysteria. When I moved to Toronto in 2003 (another form of penance ), I observed that 99 cent slices were a non-entity. It seems to be an epidemic unique to Vancouver. Why? Well, the other day I had a EUREKA moment. I'm easily excited. I was reminiscing back to the olden days when my friends would go to the Ivanhoe to partake in underage libation consumption. In those days, it was possible to purchase large quantities of cheese from other Ivanhoe patrons at a very competative price. I never bought any of these dubious dairy products, but I'm sure there were a few takers. So, this brings me back to my current question. Is there a developed network of cheese thieves re-selling bricks of mozzarella to Vancouver's pizza parlours? A quick google search returned a brief story about similar activity in Newfoundland. Click Here! I hope this thread doesn't result in me waking up next to Sea Biscuit's severed head.

Hi my name is Jasmine and I am addicted to caffeine. I blame my serious addiction on the Americanos served at Our Town (Broadway and Kingsway). The large Americano features 4 shots of intense espresso...served with a sidecar of hot water. I have recently concluded that I can only consume these stimulant bombs pre-Fitness World. They make for an enthusiastic cardio session. I'm a girl who will gladly eat chocolate made of 99% cocoa solids and this espresso appeals to those same receptors. They used to have the most wonderful oatmeal raisin cookies. They recently changed suppliers (or perhaps started baking in house). It's just not the same.

Thank you for the welcome everyone! Vancouver Lee: My knowledge of African food is somewhat limited to the few dishes my mom cooks...and my mom is a Canadian women who just happened to live in Zambia for 3 years in the 70's. I can tell you that stew features heavily! I have seen WAVES on Hastings, but since there is an Artigiano a couple blocks away I always end up going with old faithful. I should pop in and scope out the pastry selection, purely for research purposes.

Hello everyone, I just became a member of the society after many weeks of lurking! I am very excited to get to know you all. The other night I was in Burnaby visiting my mother and we drove past a new African restaurant. I believe it is called African Spice, but don't quote me on it. The location was roughly Imperial at Nelson street...close to Bonsor Recreation Centre. We had just polished off a copius amount of homemade Chicken Curry and Nshima (a Zambian staple food similar to polenta), so we didn't get to stop in and see what they had to offer. I am very curious as to which country the owners are from. I will also contribute a little bit of nostalgia to this thread. When I was a teenager, I worked in this little counter service place on Denman called Perogy's Perogies. It is the only time I have ever worked in a kitchen. I made hundreds of Perogies from scratch every shift. I miss those perogies...might have to whip up a batch sometime soon, for old times sake!
