Sorry I forgot about Europe Heaven Hill primaraly exports Pikesville it is very hard to find in the U.S. which is a shame because it realy is a lovely rye. It is high time that they start further distribution in the US again. I have to say that one of my favorite ryes that no one is comenting on is Wild Turkey Rye It is very robust and has a nice grassy spikeyness to it has some nice spicey kick to the background. I also use some modifiers in rye Manhattans I like a little dash of Grand Marnier and some Marachino Cherry Syrup from Fee Bros. I also have tried Cointreau Punt e mes and Marachino Liq. I also find that rye seems to blend very well with congnac i.e. the Vieux Carrie cocktail. The great thing about the manhattan is that it lends its self to so many reincarnations. it is a template for so many variations. The Handy Rye needed some serious mixing before it made a "non burning" manhattan. I may even add a little water next time I use it. The High proof Antique Collection numbers are all like that lots of flavor with lots of heat! I actrualy preffer them in old fashoined glass packed with ice and a touch of Strirrings Club soda.

Pikesville is only avalable in Maryland. I bought 3 cases of it when I was there last time. The Sazeracs are all exelent the Handy Is 8 years old. Unfortunatley the 18 year old gives me some horrible allergic reaction. I like the older ryes and I like the young ryes. I'm a slut for rye. I have so many ryes in my collection I have all listed in the NY Times article. I find the bigest difference between older and younger wiskies is the amount of oak in the flavor the older the whiskey the more reaction there has been with the char and the oak more tannins and more creasotes from the char which creates more sweetness and woodsy phenolic flavors, and more lactones are created which give a creamy toffee flavor. I hope that all these companies will make more ryes. Ryes are comming back and are on the verge of a major comeback. I think It is high time that the distillers start expanding there distribution channells and start making more Rye!

Which exact brand have you found? I did a few searches on the PLCB website and came up with nothing. ← the vodka web site is at www.medoeff.com they have a distributor in Oregon. ← sorry, that's www.medoyeff.com ← I traked down one of the retailers of medoyeff vodka. They put me in contact with Christian Krogestad of Portland House Spirits. Very pleasanat person . Sure enough they are planing on launching quite a few new spirits including genevers. They are working towards getting N.Y. distribution. I think they are definately a group that should be closely watched. They are planing on doing some pretty unique things. I for one am deffinately interested.

I'm finding a lot of press info on the internet but no official web site for Portland House, Spirits. The Medoff Vodka has a small web site. does any one have info on how to get ahold of this company. They definately sound interesting and I would like to get some of thier poducts to the east coast.

Garry Regan's Orange Bitters are a wonderfull versatile material blending well with many drink formats, traditional and modern. Made a great Dutch Sweet Martini with: Dutch Sweet Martini Damrak " genever" Bols 3oz. Carapano Antiqua sweet vermouth 1oz. few drops of cherry juice two dashes Regan's orange bitters one dash Fee's old fashioned bitters (these bitters are wonderfully spicey) stir with cracked ice 1 min. strain into cocktail glass garnish with cherrys and valencia orange twists. Gary Regan did it again

Boomsma genever is one of the poorest repersentations of genever, it doesn't even taste like it. One of my relatives sent me genever from 7 diiferent distillers in young and old varieties from the neatherlands and they are all better than boomsma. zuidam bols bokma wanwees dekyuper and many more

Zuidam Genever is now avalible in N.Y. It is truly exelent! They also make a dry gin that blew my socks off. Go to the website for Zuidam U.S. then call and talk to Richard Ward he is very nice, extremly knowledgable about these products and he is very helpfull.

Genever is the hot item revisited from the past. there are three main brands avlible in the U.S. Zuidam distributed from Chicago - look up thier website Damrak from bols a modern jonge genever distributed from Remey Amerique in NY Boomsma jong and oude niether one of these are great but they will suffice I suggest writting some of the major producers of genevers in the neatherlands at thier websites to help get more genevers to the U.S. Bokma distilers Bols Dekuyper Zuidam boomsma and thier are many more It is true that the Dutch drink genever strait. However there re also many cocktails that can be made from genever and are avalible at drink boy.com and bols.com. I come from a dutch family and find it very difficult to find a good selection of genvers in the united states but I am working on it. I think it is a drink catagory that is worth revisiting. Let the Dutch companies know you want their genevers and hopefully more distubtuion will start happening to the U.S. It is just that most people in the U.S. dont understand that genever is more like wiskey. Its malty sweet taste is underscored by the flavor of juniper so when making dirinks it does not perfom like london dry. however there are many great recipies on the internet and they are well worth trying ← Zuidam Genever is exelent and it is being distibuted from chicacago to many other states. This genever is exelent full bodied and very well done. It is also avalible on internetwines.com. I actualy made a cosmo with it and it was outstanding. I also used the zuidam genever to make a "manhattan" and a negroni and a martini all of which were superbe. One must alway take into acount that a genever will perfom more like wiskey than gin but it has an underlying note of juniper so it creates for a very interesting base liquor. Zuidam also makes a dry gin witch is also exelent it has full rich flavors of natural botanicles and makes an amazing martini or dubonet cocktail. If you call zuidam U.S. in chicago talk to Richard Ward he is very nice and extreemly helpfull.

I'm not a distiller so I don't realy know. I think the malting process is done to the grain and then the whole thing is added into the mash!

Bol's Damrak is an exelent replacement for Bols jonge genever I tatsed them side by side and found them to be very comparible however the Damrak was a little more fresh with just a touch of lemon. I like it a little bit better than the Bol's jonge. Keep on e-mailing and writing the genever producing companies. Let's get some more genevers over here. All they want to know is that we are intereseted so thier distributors will pay to stock the products for the U.S.
-
the second formula sounds more like a genever taste. However you have to remember that much of the flavor of genever comes from malted grains giving it more of a wiskey effect.

Damrak from bols is being distributed nation wide it is an exelent genever with all of the caractistis of a bols poduct. Call Remey Amerique in N.Y. N.Y. they are U.S. dsidtibutor they can tell you who your state's distributor may be. I have one of my friends who is a mayor of one of the towns in the Neatherlands on the case to get these company's and distributors a kick in the butt to get us some more dutch gin. meanwhile write the dutch genever companies e-mails tell them you want thier products and we will see what happens

The genever gin market in the U.S. is a pathetic mess rite now. I grew up in Dutch family and I am very aware of genever as a concept. My mothers family is related to the Bokma genever distilers family. I have contacted Bols and have been told that they are reassesing the American market for genevers. Bols Damrak gin is and outstanding product with all the hallmarks of a great genever, but where is the word genever on the bottle, because that is what it is. The other three genevers from bols the zeer oude, jonge and corenwyn are all exelent products. Bokma distileries make wonderfull genevers but they are virtually impossible to get in the U.S. De kuyper makes a full range of genevers including the flavored varieties witch are also good. Boomsma which seems to be the most avalible genever in the U.S. however in many ways it laks in flavor and is more like a flavored vodka than a true genever. Even thier oude quality lacks personalilty. The Bokma brands are steller and they come in many different flavors and ages I sugest visiting thier web site. I am writing to all the main producers to let them know that thier is a genuine interest in these products in the U.S. I hope others take time to do so as well. Let's get these products back in the U.S. Some people may not know how to deal with this clasifications of gin. In the neatherlands genevers are drank chilled out of a cordial glass called a tulip glass. But they are also mixed into many wonderfull concotions for drinking pleasure. Jonge genevers including damrak can be mixed into martinis negronis aviations and even cosmos. Oude genevers can be sipped neet or mixed with liquors and bitters they should be treated more like bourbon or rye when constructing drinks. Oude genvers have a particular affinaty to raisins that have been soaked in other liquors such an curacao drambue or blackberry brandy and marachino liquor. Almost all mixtures of yong or old benifit from the adition of bitters. orange bitters#6 from Gary Reagan or Fee's are great. Old fashioned bitters from fee's or agoustoura. what I am trying to say is that there is a whole catergory of liquors that we are missing out on. So let the company's know that you want thier products rite them e-mails and tell them you want them. They are already aware of this but they are lookingat the american market to see if it's worth it. The genever distilers in the neatherlands work like a small colective and need to know that there are people interested in thier products. It opens up so many different ways of making drinks. Major producers they all have international web sites where you can let them know that you would like to try thier products. Bols Bokma Dekuyper Boomsma Zuidam
