  1. Crazyweed - an outstanding small restaurant in Canmore, Alberta, serves their (amazing) curries with a banana chutney that I'm still thinking about !!! Have failed to come up with anything close to it - but open to input from all......
  2. I love the walk along the water to the Urban Fare. I figure the $1.40 for an excellent apple and a great 40 minute walk is as good a deal as a gym membership....! I know I'm not from here but what's with all the spandex people in fitness centers pounding away in front of windows, so they can see me walking to get an excellent apple !! funny Capers is a good store. Vegan child and gluten-intolerant roommate and I all enjoy some of the delicious multi grain baked stuff. Love that we can get Terra bread, David Wood cheese, and the fixings for home-made (vegan and gluten-free) granola in one spot. I buy most of my produce on Davie Street, where there are several small fruit and veg stores- lots of organic available. And the market, of course, once or twice a week. SO- I'm singing the song of living downtown. Have to say I'm not finding the prices much higher than the last larger centers we've lived in, though we hear a lot about how expensive it is here. Love the idea (hope it's true) that some of the cost of the food I choose pretty carefully is going to the producers.
  3. Oh My !!! Has anyone else just moved to an amazing food place ? Arrived in Vancouver B.C. just 6 months ago. Perfect and amazing food EVERYWHERE !!!! So, after that Vancouver moment, I'm nominating just-popped popcorn, tossed with a little unsalted butter and Maldon salt. I like to call that dinner (mostly if nobody is around to catch me.) Also the stupendous bounty of local apples still available. Quite good w popcorn
  4. 15 is a great age to get your feet wet in the kitchen!!! As a chef (in Vancouver) with daughters I think that if she is meant to chef, she will, with or without you. If she's not meant to, you can help guide her to the next thing ( possibly food related...) There is no escaping the downsides, without whining on about them, as a career path it's comparable to the entertainment industry... I did not encourage my girls to be models or actresses either By all means though see if you can position her in a relatively gentle kitchen and get her doing prep, dishes and some customer service. All building blocks for cooking and a good way for her to start finding her feet. A good caterer in your area is a 15-year old girl friendly option. As an aside, neither of my girls cooked , or showed any interest in it other than being informed and interested eaters, till they were 18-19, and now both are showing off in the kitchen. Surprising and delightful !
  5. hi all - not sure I agree. If the program was labelled w warnings.... we are responsible for the demise. In chef training we went through a slaughter house. It's part of what we do. Does TV/media always have to be dumbed down to be fuzzy and sentimental - I wish not. ( I cook 'em and eat 'em... what does everyone else think ?)
