    Fig Gelato

I was watching Tyler's Ultimated on the food network today and there was a recipe for Fig Gelato. Sounds good.
  3. I baked the phyllo with banana at 350 for about 15 minutes. I took it out because the inside began to melt and I didn't want the banana to turn into mush. Should I raise the temperature to maybe 400 and bake it for 12 minutes? The cheesecake was baked at 350 for about 55 minutes. Should i start it at maybe 375 for 15 minutes?
  4. Your post made me laugh. I have been to a few raw restaurants in NYC and I have even made a few raw desserts. First, the food taste horrible. I have tryed raw pizza, which is a mixture of ground nuts and flax seeds for the crust and ground macadamia nuts with almond milk for the cheese. You can imagine how that must taste. Raw food relies heavily on nuts and spices to make it taste somewhat good. I doubt it is even healthy to eat the amount of nuts (cups) that their recipes call for. On the other hand, the desserts aren't all that bad. I have been to pure food and wine in the city and had a chocolate torte and it was very good. I think 15 bucks for a slice that was half the size of a normal slice of cake. Everyone has conflicting opinions on health. People see the raw food diet as an easy way to lose weight. Vegetables, fruits, and nuts are the most nutrious food sources in the world. But does that make eating a diet based soley on nuts, fruits, and vegetables actually healthy? I really feel people need protein in their diets. Nuts alone do not have enough protein unless you eat enormous amounts. A low protein diet will make you sick. I know from experience. Good luck on trying to convert your girl friend back to eating meat again. After a few weeks, I think she will become incredibly bored with the meals she will eat, and she will convert back.
  5. Well its 9:30 in the morning here and I am eating cheesecake The Halvah Cheesecake came out really good. I used bittwersweet chocolate instead of white chocolate. There are a few things I would change though; 1. Do not use the toasted sliced almonds inside the cake. They became somewhat soft and seemed out of place. 2. I wouldn't use phyllo dough for the crust. It makes for a nice presentation, but the bottom becomes soggy and it just blends in with the cheesecake. 3. I would use ground halvah over the whole cheesecake, not just the center. It melts while baking and forms a really tasty top layer. Anyone have any ideas for a crust? Should I just use the typical graham cracker crust? Hm... It was good though and if you like halvah you will definately enjoy it.
  6. Hello, today I made two desserts. A Halvah Cheesecake wrapped in Phyllo...the recipe is in the halvah baking thread. The second thing I made was a Rachael Ray inspired recipe. I know... laugh away. It is actually a really simple but great tasting dessert that I often make. Served it with some whipped cream with brown sugar and its "yum-o" as Rachael Ray would say. Ling, now I know what you mean about taking pictures at night. The banana pic looks horrid. I wanted to post it though because this is such a simple dessert that people usually love. Halvah Cheesecake: Banana, bittersweet chocolate, brown sugar and cinnamon wrapped in phyllo dough: *I think this picture deserves to be in the gallery of regrettable food thread?*
  7. I had some blueberries that were getting soft in the fridge so I decided to make a few mini berry tarts. A fast, simple crust made in the food processor, chilled for a brief period, and kind of rolled out and set in the tart pans quickly. I was in a rush today so the pastry didn't come out too pretty I Layered plain blueberries on the bottom and poured over a custard type filling containing Kirsch. They tasted pretty darn good. Blueberry Tarts:
  8. Went out into the city with a good friend today. We went to Jacques Torres' chocolate shop in Manhattan. Sampled a bunch of his chocolates inlcuding: melon (was soooo good), ginger (not strong enough), chai tea (ok), wicked (chiles, very good) and a few others. The melon was really good. I could eat a whole small box (12 count) of them. I also got a frozen orange hot chocolate. Tasted too orangey, overpowering the dark chocolate. I had a mudslide cookie, which was brownie like and contained walnuts. I don't know excatly why they called it a mudslide cookie, but it was good. I bought a extra mudslide cookie and a bag of chocolate covered graham crackers.
  9. I really am extremely new to baking. I've been cooking and baking on and off for the past year, but have only made maybe 20-30 desserts. I am only 22 right now so I have alot of time to still learn. But thanks for the compliment ling. I appreciate it. The brownies were made with 5oz of unsweetend chocolate. Half of it gets melted with butter and the other half gets chopped and folded in at the end. Theres no cocoa powder or anything. Yea, I really love almond desserts and this Almond tart looked so good in Batali's book. To be honest, im not the biggest Batali fan. For the filling, I folded the ground almonds and chocolate into the eggwhites. After baking, the ground almonds and chocolate sank down instead of really being mixed into the macaroon. Maybe I didn't beat the egg whites until they were stiff? They were very glossy, but they only held soft-medium peaks? Should I have beaten them until they were stiff? So I had a macaroon layer, almond layer and jam later. This could be why I did not care for the recipe. I was basically eating an all almond layer with nothing else in it. I do have another tart shell in the fridge (the recipe makes two) so I will try this recipe within the next week or so again. I might add a little more than the 1/2 cup of jam he suggests and I will beat the egg whites until they are really stiff. Ling, I will let you know if it comes out any better next time.
  10. Hello everyone, it has been a while since I have posted on these forums. I am a novice who really does not have much experience with cooking or baking, but I am doing my best this summer (3 months off from college) to bake as much as I can. I am still working on my lack of photography skills so be gentle when you view my pictues. Ok, the past few days I have baked two things. Brownies from Chocolate Obsession: Almond Tart from Molto Italiano: The brownies turned out well. They are very moist. I've tryed CI brownies before and I did not like them at all. The almond tart was....um... different. The pastry crust was enjoyable. It had a nice almond taste to it. The filling is where it goes wrong. Apricot jam, ground almonds and a macaroon type top. I wont be making this again. I have learned so much already by reading posts from all of you. Im jealous of Ling and all the desserts she is able to eat Tomorrow I will be attempting to grill some pinapple slices with cracked peper, a orange juice type sauce and vanilla ice cream. I will post it up if all goes well. Grilling and me = noone wants to touch my food. Take care everyone.
  11. For dessert, I made a Pumpkin Cheesecake with a Caramel-Bourbon Sauce. It was from the past issuse of Bon Appetit. The sauce was awesome. Hopefully all is well.
  12. I made the Chocolate Domingo Cake a few days ago and I really did not like it. The cake was very fudgy tasting. It reminded me of the chocolate cake in devil dogs, except the devil dogs tasted much better. Will not be making this one again. I also made the Almond Cake and topped it with a sour cream ganache. I really did not like this combo. The sourcream overpowered the taste of the cake, which had a great almond flavor by itself. I might try it again, but with no topping this time.
  13. Hello everyone. this is my first post here, but I have been lurking for quite some time now. The fingers are amazing lookin, as is all the food here. It just so happens, that last night I made a batch of ghost marshmellows for my mother's first grade class she teaches. I piped chocolate around the edges to make them stand out more and gave them eyes and a mouth. The ghosts came out ok for rushing, as I had to study for a midterm I didn't get to post a finished picture, but there are two done in the picture lol. Enjoy. Hope the picture shows up! If not let me know. Thanks.
