  1. There is a lot of over-marketing with ultra premium spirits..it interests me as i used to work in the industry..but i just hate to see it happen to rum. It will lift the image of rum to a certain extent, but don't be fooled by the hype when choosing what to drink. How much was invested in 10 Cane? It may do well on-trade but is it any better than other much cheaper alternatives??
  2. I have never tried Four Square, which i think is spiced. Any recommendations?
  3. Super premium vodkas have had success in the on-trade, so I guess someone thought to come up with the white rum equivilent. The bottom line is that overall success will have to come from the off- trade. I really don't get the marketing of this rum at all.
  4. I think it can be spelt both ways; the latter with a wiggly thing below the last c (in Brazil). Am i making sense?
  5. Cachasa has suddenly caught on in London recently. I think the public are becoming much more aware of it as many bars are serving cachasa rather than rum based cocktails.
  6. Seconded. This is great stuff for cooking. Try making a sauce using rum and apricot with a hint of chilli and saffron. Good with white fish
  7. Cachasa. This is the trend in the UK in the last month or so. I think premium Cachasa will be big in 06. Don't think white rhum agricole will get a look in seeing as they are both vying for the same market, for example 10 Cane.
  8. So this is a successful blend of cane and molasses? Interesting.. Does it have a cane taste?
  9. I guess you could say they have some bottle.. *gets coat*
  10. Has anyone tried this? It is described as a rum rather than cachasa(?)
  11. I have to say the price of the 25 yr does seem slightly ridiculous compared to the 23yr . Am I missing something?
  12. 1796 to me is a very sophisticated rum. The flavours seem more 'natural' to me than Zacapa. Hence I bought another bottle last week..
  13. Tried Trois rivieres (dark rum)in a tiny bar in japan. Not much flavour but quite smooth.
  14. Is there a new bottle design for centenario?
  15. I wanted to get El Dorado but the packaging might have given the impression i got it in Duty Free. Santa Theresa bottle/case looked much more sophisticated
  16. Had to get a birthday present for a 77 yr old yesterday so i went to Gerry's in Soho. Between Pyrat, Goslings family reserve, ElDorado 15 and Santa Theresa 1796 i chose the 1796. Hope I made the right choice!
  17. I think rums should have a 'mark' to show they are of a certain standard, not like a rum award, more like a michelin star. There should be a criteria set , and each year the rums are re tested to retain the mark. Easy.
  18. Sorry, I meant to say Sang Som. Could'nt remember which was which! Can't remember much about the taste, let alone the holiday. Good times
  19. It's a little different to vodka. A premium Vodka is expected to be triple distilled etc. With dark rum, one looks first at the age. With a light rum who knows? We are starting to see super premium rums now. Its such a grey area.
  20. there are so many different versions of this cocktail that it is hard to know which is the definitive one. I will ask my bartender and get back on this
  21. Apologies if thread already exists.. mine is an apple pie martini. Lovely
  22. Thailand Rum is great, but for all the wrong reasons. I don't know if there is any proof in the rumours of hallucinagens contained in the rum(sang tip) I had some great times drinking this stuff
  23. Better than Stella Artois and the dreaded Fosters though
  24. Anything like this in the UK? We only have Bar at Earls court which is not the same
