  1. Homemade is always best, but the closest to that has been at Don Francesco's on Burrard. Being Italian, I fancy myself a tiramisu connoisseur, and theirs the best I've had in any restaurant.
  2. Closed? I just saw an ad in The Sun last week - they were advertising a 3 course dinner for $45 (or something close to that).
  3. What?? That's tragic - I'm addicted to their par-baked bread. Does anyone know why?? They were the best.
  4. I went to Morton's during the summer. The quality of the food was good, but don't think you'll be getting "Morton-size portions" for that price. The shrimp, as always, is amazing, the filet was smaller than normal, as were the sides, but still, it was more than enough to fill a hungry tummy. That being said, I will never go back to Morton's. We arrived right on time for our reservation, were seated and someone immediately came and took our order. Our appetizer arrived 10 minutes later, before our wine had been served. Before we could finish the appies, the mains arrived and so on and so forth. We were in and out in just over an hour. I wonder if that had anything to do with ordering the Special.....anyways, it was a real turn-off. Next time, Gothom gets my reservation.
  5. One more - Nestor's Market will be opening shortly on Main St. near 28th Ave.
  6. The only thing that I would call "good" pizza is Lombardo's. I'd be one happy girl if they'd consider delivering.
  7. Which merchant was carrying the truffle butter? ← It can be found in the cheese area, with all the speciality butters.
  8. Ingredients on the label are as follows: Pure creamery butter, porcini mushrooms, white truffles (tuber magnatum pico & tuber albidum), soy sauce(?) white truffle flavour, salt. Works for me.
  9. While at Urban Fare this afternoon, I noticed that they are carrying white or black truffle butter. Intrigued, I asked if any of the counter people had tried it - obviously they hadn't, and the gentleman was kind enough to open a container for me. He spread it on crackers and offered it to us - oh boy - was it good! The name is D'artagnan White (or black) Truffle Butter - 3 oz. for $9.99. I've already eaten half of it on some bread, but I imagine it would be fantastic on pasta, in risotto or with scrambled eggs. Much nicer than the truffle oil, IMHO. The label says it's made with porcini mushrooms as well as truffles, but it's the truffle flavour that shines through. It's made my day! Sooo good! They also had fresh fish on sale - marlin, ahi tuna, shark, mahi mahi and swordfish. We tried them all, and they were unbelievably fresh - no fishy-ness at all. Great on the grill.
  10. I just got back from lunch at Monk McQueens - the food was so-so, the wine was great, and the deck can't be beat.
  11. I love the old-fashion chocolate layer cake - almost impossible to find in this city. And yes, I'm too lazy to make one from scratch. Does anyone know of a bakery or restaurant in Vancouver that might still make something like this?
  12. The price of lobster today was $12.99. Wonder if it's going down tomorrow?
  13. Has anybody seen the prices for crab and lobster at T&T lately? Do they raise their prices on Valentine's? I am SO craving lobster...
  14. I couldn't actually see if there was space available, but I could only see about 1/4 of the restaurant. It could very well be that they were full....but the 45 minute thing just didn't ring true. And Cactus Club doesn't allow for reservations except for large parties, which is why we arrived before 6 pm. Thanks for the feedback.....
  15. I'd appreciate some feedback on my experience at Cactus Club (Broadway) and Earl's. Last night, a girlfriend, myself, and four kids (ages 7-12) went to Cactus Club for dinner. We arrived at about 5:50 pm, knowing it gets quite busy on Saturday nights. When we arrived at the door, the Glamour Gals at the front desk tell us it will be a 45 minute wait for a table. There was no one else waiting to be seated. We got the "oh, a bunch of large groups JUST came in". To me, it seemed pretty clear they didn't want us there. As if we were going to wait 45 minutes with kids in tow? We are regulars (as a family of 4) and have never encountered anything like this. So we toddle off to Earl's. Same situation. It'll be a bit of a wait, ladies. Meanwhile, streams of people were being seated before us. We're hungry, kids are starving.....after a 30+ minute wait we left, unbelievably frustrated with what we had just experienced. I was seething. To both me, and my friend, we got shown the door because, simply, on a Saturday night they were more interested in the bottom line than serving a party that wouldn't have a large bar tab. I'm frustrated that I didn't do anything. Should I have spoken to the manager? Could this all have been a strange coincidence? Help me here! PS we came back to my place and ordered pizza. Even that came 30 minutes late!
  16. To follow up - went to Cin Cin last night, and sure enough, the menu was exactly like the website - pork appy and pork main. I passed on both. Would have liked to have seen a pasta option. Portions were very small and uninspired. Really disappointing, considering Cin Cin has always been one of my favorites. I'll definitely take a pass on next years' DOV. On a more positive note, our server was lovely and the service, seamless (but a bit rushed).
  17. I'm going to Cin Cin tomorrow night with the girls - they've never been, and wanted to try it for DOV. It looks to me that they've changed the menu since we booked. Is that fair? They have a pork appy, and a pork main. No chicken, no beef... I suppose this is what we would call "dumbed down", right? Hate to admit it, but I'm not looking forward to it. Why, Cin Cin, Why???????????
  18. Any idea of when they might actually be opening?
  19. Had lunch at the Place today - here's the summary Hits: XLB's - really, really good. Spicy szechuan pork was rich with flavour, but way too oily. Still, I'd order it again, but with rice to soak up the yummy sauce. Pork and veggie pot stickers....surprisingly, they were crispy on the outside, but juicy on the inside....or was it oil??? Anyways, everyone loved them. Shanghai noodles were....meh...didn't love them, but didn't hate them either. Misses: Tan Tan noodles....I prefer them in a soup..these were gloppy noddles with an odd anticeptic taste....blech. Chicken in wine..nothing to write home about. Chive cake...why oh why did I order that? I thought it might be similar to Szechuan Chonging's green onion pancakes. I'd pass on that one for sure. Another table ordered the lamb kebabs and they smelled great...too bad I don't like lamb. Wish they'd put beef or chicken on the menu. The place was completely full at lunch time, and only two staff members working...one cooking, one serving. Thankfully another server showed up, and they were absolutely swamped. Seems word is getting out.
  20. It's not often that a restaurant website catches my eye, but this one....WOW!.....if they put as much effort into the restaurant as they do the website, then I'm excited. Can't wait......!
  21. I heard the same story about the cheating husband and the scorned wife getting Lombardo's. Speaking as an Italian female, perhaps that's why I was always drawn over there... The Spaghetti with Tomato Sauce is very very good - looks to me that they make the spaghetti in house - it's got a great chew to it.
  22. Speaking of Lombardo's - wasn't there a wild rumour flying around in the summer that they were going to open up a second location downtown in the Paramount Complex? The only reason Marcello's is always busy, IMHO, is because Lombardo's is small, dark, cramped and in a strip mall (and all the seats and tables seem to wobble - drives me nuts!). But I still like Lombardo's better. Their Capriciossa is to die for.
  23. I can't believe you have a small baby at home AND was able to get out that many times in a couple of days. I don't think I left my house for 3 months after I had my babe.... PS Welcome - your review was great!
  24. Any connection with Pajo's? The only reason I ask is thier other location is Port Moody, and the Steveston/Tri-cities crossover seems odd. And I'll check this place out this weekend, if it's half as good as you suggest, I'l single handidly keep this place afloat. (Is handidly a word? Looks odd, sounds right. Yeah I could use tyhis interweb thing to check, but I'll let my stupidity stand.) ← I noticed SPC, across from where Mama's used to be and wondered what is was like. Mary Hill is a long long away from Port Moody though, isn't it? ← The actual address is #102 - 2540 Mary Hill Road, Port Coquitlam
