  1. I also grew up in upstate NY...the MacIntosh and Cortland were my favorites as a kid and still are. We had lots of orchards around us and could easily get them right off the tree.

    Grilled Cheese

Provolone with a really good dijon mustard. I can't say that I am picky about the bread, but our sandwich bread is usually Brownberry's Soft Wheat.
  3. Hello All - I don't post much since I am much more of lurker, but I will post when I feel strongly about something. Salad is one of those things that I feel passionate about. I also grew up on the iceberg lettuce with carrots, tomatoes and cukes. Good seasons or other bottled dressings. Sometime in high school my mother switched to romaine after she declared it healthy, which was fine with me. I once had to attend a presentation skills class for work, and one of the topics to get you comfortable with presenting was to talk about your favorite food. When it was my turn, I announced that salad was my favorite food and I heard a gasp from the crowd (all 15 of them). Some people at Dale Carnegie would say that getting a reaction from the audience is a good thing, but I was quite surprised by this. Once I said it was because I love salad dressing, they seem to gasp a sigh of relief. I had now managed to gain some respect, since apparently they felt salad wasn't a worthy favorite food choice. I think they pictured me glopping on some Thousand Island, Western or Hidden Valley Ranch and breathed a little easier. And while I like some ranch dressing now and then, I prefer a nice vinaigrette (possibly, even Good Seasons). I approached the topic with a "if you were stranded on an island" mentality and all I could think of was salad. Seriously, would you want lobster bisque everyday? For me it would be salad...all kinds of lettuce, all types of dressings, vegetables and meat.
  4. This is my first posting...I've been reading for weeks, but felt so strongly about our Saratoga dining experiences that I had to write. I'm usually hanging out in The Heartland. We make it to Saratoga about every other year for the races and stay with friends who live there. The last time we came to visit we went to Springwater (one of their favorite restaurants) and loved it. I managed to make it back for business a few months ago and had another great meal. Our visit last week wasn't any different. The food was fresh and interesting, and the service was great for our large group (about 12 of us). We eat out a lot in Chicago and often comment on how our expectations have changed over the years and wonder if we are becoming difficult and expecting too much of restaurants that are at a certain price point. Springwater lives up to what we expect. Our experience at Sargo's the night before was quite the opposite. It was the same large crowd of people, and you would have thought it was the first time they ever encountered such a large group. The waitress wasn't knowledgeable about the specials, failed to tell us what they were out of until we ordered (the lobster savannah - the only thing that I wanted), empty water glasses, and I could go on and on. The food wasn't anything special as docsconz said...it read better on paper than it tasted. My husband had the veal wrapped lobster and was extremely unimpressed. I am looking forward to trying Chez Sophie the next time we visit (another favorite of our hosts).
