  1. Are you telling me that plymounth gin is not on the shelves on Charlotte ABC, kpurv? In W-S it is in every liquor store. I used to frequent Total Wine fairly often but Have found that with City Beverage, Whole Foods even your everyday grocery increasing their stock of imports in the last few years there is less and less need. I would use them if stocking up or having a party. they offer a cost savings but not enough to justify going out of the way to pick up a six
  2. Pink Gin background and recipe here. Angostura bitters and gin in a glass. Nothing could be simpler. Make it with something zingy [Junipero, etc.] for a real kick. ← I am glad to know one of my favs has a name. For the past 18 months(since acquiring my first bottle of angustora bitters I have been enjoying this drink often with a twist of lime. I really think it works well for lower proof gins such as plymouth

    RDU: Barbecue

I would definitely add lexington. Not a tourist rap at all. Give's you the opportunity to try several different cues places that cook over wood in a small area. You could also add places in winston, gso and mocksville/davie county while your in the area. add wineries to the list and you have a weekend
  4. Have you tried using both 100 and 80 prooof. at the top of the thread I think it mentions 100 proof over zest for 45 days then filter and combine with 80 proof for 45 days. I think the results are great. One step i skip is adding the simple syrup. i just add it to my drinks as I mix them up. I've tried blood orange, orange and lemoncello and the blood orange wins hand down
  5. That's the answer's I've been searching for. Thanks
  6. It is on Healy drive right off of Stratfor Road.
  7. Brent, can you expound upon your Nilner's experience. I have been twice. The first time for a Pimento burger which was quite good(though not up to harpers) the second time for the lackluster frogmore stew. Each time apps have been good. Sixth and vine is a good spot for a drink but I still have yet to do their food. nobles may be good for a lunch though I agree it may be to formal for dinner. My suggestion, try Milners', Sweet Potatoes or Christophers I have been dining in Winston since October and the best meals I have eaten have been at Noble's. Having said that, nothing has been truly outstanding and, based on the description of your friend, Noble's might be a bit too upscale. I haven't been to Sweet Potatoes, but that might be an idea. I've had very mixed experiences at Milner's and Sixth and Vine, although the latter might appeal as well given its location. The best recommendation I can give is Marshall Street Smokehouse, a spot in the middle of restaurant purgatory, but near Old Salem. Decent food and a touch edgy. ←
  8. I stopped in for a takeout menu this weekend. This will be a real tough location. But if you are looking for an alternative in chain heaven then this should be a respite. THey were empty @ 7 on a Saturday, though they have only been open a month or so. I will have to give them a try. Very pretty room. I did not notice but do they sell beer/wine?
  9. the same has happened to me using 100 proof. I usually load up on the orange zest. Adding some 100 proof should do the trick. If not save it for another use, filter using a coffee filter or just leave it in. It will still be quite tasty, especially after 4-5 days in the freezer. On the luxardo website the Refreshing with gin and tonic is my favorite. I've been maing them with tangueray since my first batch. I guess great minds think alike. I tried it and it works well with even just a splash of the cello. It also adds something special to margaritas.
  10. Enoteca got a brief mention in Sunday's NY Times http://travel2.nytimes.com/2006/02/12/trav...2surfacing.html
  11. I think that greeensboro actually has a good culinary scene for a city its size. The colleges have a definite impact. GSO clearly has better options that HP or winston(and I live in winston) It excels in the triad on the asian front and in upscale options. The large vietnamese pop gives greensboro lots(more that a dozen or so) of east asian grocers, 4 vietnamese restaurants(I also agree with the Pho Hien Vong rec as their quality has risen in the last two years) several vietnames cafe/coffe shops. There are at least 3-4 indian places, 3-4 Thai restaurants and several indian stores Lucky 32 is in my opinion underwhelming. I would love to support them because they do have good ideas(seasonal menus) but their food has been nothing special on my visits to their Winston location. I would chose berts or revival as better options.
  12. Bert's is a great choice. not just a simple fish place in my opinion. triaddiner.com has sample menus for undercurrent. Have not been but it gets consistently good recs from people I trust. I think there is still another restaurant on dolley madison if memory serves correct. also try revival grill(revivalgrill.com) - a block away from bistro sofia. leblon has changed to a churrascaria I would definitely second the rec for giacomos. only 5-6 stoplights from the coliseum. try any of their house made meats. I am particluar to the pastrami and the hot soppressata. they also make their own breads, salads and desserts(cannoli, tiramisu, palmiers) (salamisbymail.com)
  13. Exactly, Tanqueray, just like cognac has been popular in the African American community for years thus the targeting makes sense. Just as most liquors are targeted towards a demographic, whether sex, age, race or geography. Tanqueray enjoyed with either grapefruit or tonic, I think I will pour one now. Preferably the regualr(bitter) grapefruit juice not that sweet stuff(ruby red). Tanqueray Sterling vodka is still available in the Carolinas.
  14. From the carolina's - Neese's country sausage, texas Pete hot sauce and Blenheims ginger ale
  15. Yeah that was all the rage in NC the last 12 months or so. I have seen it a lot less in 2005 than 2004. I think that is for people who don't like beer. I tried it once, took one sip and ordered another beer
  16. check out sunday's new york times magazine. Two articles on 'cello making. Amanda hesser writes up a limoncello recipe in the NYT mag and in the Style magazine there is a blood orange liquer recipe. Anything with Blood orange has got to be good
  17. I would definitely skip Old salem tavern. I have never heard good reports of their food. Unfortunately most of the better choices are closed on Sunday. If you are flying into greensboro I would eat there. try revival grill(revivalgrill.com). or if you get in before 5 try giacomos on high point road(salamisbymail.com). In winston try village tavern by wake forest or sixth and vine downtown if they are open. Also open in downtown winston is foot hills brewing a new brewpub. the local paper panned the food but the beer isn't bad. six and vine has a better beer and wine by the glass selection and a decent selection of nibbles. I have not had the food but the beer choices are really good below is a link to some brief mini reviews of winston eateries. Search the site for other choices http://www.journalnow.com/servlet/Satellit...s=1037645508968
  18. I did a blood orange cello that turned out wondrous. Actually used it in margaritas as well. Every time I bought a blood orange I put the peel into my mason jar. I would say it was an order of magnitude better than my limoncello. Though i used about 20 orange peels and I have not had the chance to compare it between say tangerines and bergamots.
  19. yeah I been following them in the local press. I think they had a write up in triangle.com and one in the indy weekly. The websites also appear ready for someone to push the buttom for them to go live http://ghgrestaurants.com/

    Mullet

I grew up eating fried mullet, actually fried Virgina mullet, never regular mullet. A search on the web revealed that mullet is actually a kingfish. Usually dredged in flour and cornmeal and fried. Occasionally baked. Never filleted. Good eating for sure
  21. Where is jenkins brand sold? In the triad(greensboro,ws high point) Neese's is the go to brand. They make a delicious liver mush. I have usually heard the terms liver mush and pudding used interchangeably. I like mine toasted under the broiler so the outside is fairly dry and the interior is quite lush served with toast and a poached egg if your a real good boy.
  22. foodie places for you to visit could be Southern Season(southernseason.com) and depending on what part of nc your from maybe a whole foods
  23. While the location of Pakse is admittedly borderline, they close early (6:30) and I have never had any trouble in the 5-6 years I have gone. Plus it is not a long walk from the parking lot to the door.
  24. definitley try saigon it is only about a mile or so from the convention center. you may also try my other gso fav - Giacomo's. not the horse but the italian deli. they make their own meats and are about 1/2 mile from Saigon. try the pastrami or the hot housemade capicola. they have cheeses and cannoli and palmiers. For banh mi try pakse (a hole in the wall @ Freeman mill and Florida) - Take high point rd to right on Florida. Pho Hien Vong(no atmosphere but their pho is good)has been growing on me lately though i am not a fan of Binh Minh(inconsistent quality) their is also a Korean place across from Binh Minh on Market
