What I discovered when I traveled to Italy was that it was cheaper just to use my VISA card than to get lire. Substantially cheaper: they'd charge the item and the conversion was automatic, and there was nothing lost in the exchange. No charge, in other words.
I don't know if that's the case now, but it's worth investigating.
Absolutely correct. Althougth some cards have now added some sort of conversion/transaction charge that wasn't there before. Check your fine print. It's still just easier to card it.

Holy Crap, this is like a week away!
Ben
Got your passport yet?

For wine with food, you should probably visit AOC, 8022 W. Third St, LA. Lots and lots of wine by the glass.

I'm presently trying to develop an espresso blend that will be 60% - 75% decaf but still have the crema and flavor of standard caffeinated espresso.
Why? The answer is simple: so I can drink three times as much!
An admirable project. Hope it comes to fruition.

It might be a little on the cloying side, if you're using sweetened coffee syrup. I'd be tempted to try a big mug of hot milk with a shot of very strong espresso and a sizeable glob of DdL stirred in. But that does start to sound a little Starbucksy.
Add some booze and you've got Starsky and Hootch.

To follow up, it looks like Costco also has the Saeco Espresso Machine
Magic De Luxe with 15 bar pump for $674.99.
This one? click
That's the one. They also have some less expensive Gaggias.

Thanks for the details.

Off topic, but my father in law loves regaling me with tales of how rough things were in the old days when they only had coffee soup to eat. I guess it was a combo of coffee, milk and old bread. How enticing!

Michel Richard?

Costco's pushing something called Syncrony by Gaggia for $599.99. Is this a good deal or ???

I've been thru red wine phases, white wine phases, and back again. I'm on a red wine track for now.

On the Thai Town leg of your journey, you might consider a visit to Kruang Tedd Music & Thai
Address: 5151 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90027
Phone: (323) 667-9800
It's next door to Jumbo's Clown Room where Courtney Love was once (does she ever do anything once?) a stripper.

Maybe you could go totally Tiki themed. Mai Tais, pu pu platters, all things Polynesian.

Wassa matta, chew no like my hood?
We could always go to Taco Bell.
I hear they have real good mesican food.
-
The truck out back has tacos to die for.
Given the hood, try not to take this literally.
-
Really great, bad, drunk food.
How would an innocent like you know this?

Interesting concept. If I tried this I'd probably never get past Amoeba. Magic Castle incidentally has awful food. Good magic tho. You might check The Juices Fountain on Vine. And there's a strip mall at Fountain & Vine that has all sorts of low down type spots of various ethnicities including Atch Kotch.
As long as you're going to Bodhi Tree, you should stop in at nearby Urth Cafe for coffee or tea and maybe something chocolate.

It's Oki Dog. There's one on Pico and one on Fairfax not far from Santa Monica Bl. I think Gold lists it in the LA Weekly.

I dunno, but something about Soupe Le Funyun Gratinee just doesn't work.
No, no. For the Gratinee, we use Lipton's Onion Soup Mix (or Wyler's).
-
I'd also like to be the first one -- possibly in the history of the world -- to say, in print, that the word "onion" does not contain the letter 'g.'
In French it does.
And what about Funyuns?

Every trip has at least one of these ridiculous changes which costs an arm and a leg or requires extra downtime because otherwise you just can't get there from here. Just go with it. Pay the $2. Document the occasion with photos. Make it a story for retelling. Good luck.

Hardee's has been selling Angus beef burgers for some time now, and they're noticeably and substantially better than the crap they used to serve. They're now my favorite fast food burger that is located in these parts.
Hmmm. I think Hardee's is somehow corporately related to Carl's Jr. which is jumping this wagon as well.

How long do you think it'd take to get our rental car, drive to Point Loma, eat, and drive back to LAX to pick up Liam on his 4:45 flight in?? I have about 3 hrs total...
Threads are getting crossed here. No way can you leave LAX, get to Point Loma (in San Diego County) and back to LAX in 3 hours. No way. Same with Rancho Santa Fe.

Good idea for the cab ride, tipping the bellman, etc.
