wasn't it woo lae oak that committed the cardinal sin of making patrons pay for banchan? or am i making that up? if true, it should be closed, razed to the ground and the earth plowed with salt.
Actually, isn't the K-town branch closed for remodeling?

The Bungalow in Corona del Mar is good for steaks and seafood and they have high chairs.

The olives located at the bottom of a dirty martini

We'll be tourists in LA, God knows we have to drive behind them here in Hawaii... I think that we'll leave the driving to the pros. .

LA is for tourists. Enjoy your stay.

In terms of geography, all the places mentioned have been in Venice and Santa Monica, which are between the getty and the airport. If you can avoid wanting to go back to the hotel before dinner, you'll save a lot of time and cab fare.
Have fun--and please let us know what you pick!
This raises the question of how you are getting to the Getty which is some distance from the hotel you mentioned without a rented car. Some sort of bus tour? I don't think you can practically use public transportation to get to the Getty, but maybe I'm overlooking something obvious. If not, why not rent a car given what you'll be paying for cabs, etc.?
-
How long and what can I expect the cost of the cab ride there to be?
Depends on the traffic. 20-45 minutes? $10-15 each way?

Welcome. Make reservations at Joe's in Venice. California-French. 310/399-5811.

On the other hand, it's hard not to like the guy when he turns out a column like this one. http://www.laweekly.com/ink/printme.php?eid=53525

It's easier to adopt a confident authoritative tone when you don't check your facts, much less know enough to realize there's something to check.

Don't know about discount, but FWIW El Vino (a wine bar and restaurant near the Inns of Court, frequently mentioned in Rumpole stories) sells lots of wine, etc. You have to wear a coat and perhaps a tie to get into El Vino IIRC.

Tasting menu. What you wear is up to you, but don't wear jeans.

Good stuff. Keep it coming--at your leisure.

Excellent suggestions. Don't forget Josie in Santa Monica. A definite second on Mori for omakase.

Mrs. Stupid just finished her FLASH version of my site.
It takes a little time to load, but I think it's worth the wait!
Cheap Eats Flash Extravaganza!
The old URL will give you a choice of HTML or Flash.
Way cool!

From Hollywood & Highland, it'll take you about 30 minutes just to get to the closest beach.
Yeah at 1:00 a.m.! Give yourself an hour, seriously..
Depending on the beach you are heading to, you are probably looking at more than an hour commute.
The locals can do it a half hour, but there is fore-knowledge of back roads for that scenario.
If I can just get off of that L.A. freeway
Without getting killed or caught
Down that road in a cloud of smoke
For some land that I ain't bought bought bought
If I can just get off of that L.A. freeway

For the most part, the good restaurants don't have ocean views (guess they don't need em). I've heard Moonshadows in Malibu has a view and a new chef doing good things. I'd give it a try.

I will definitely try to hit Yuca's.
It looks like my kind of place.
Haven't got a chance to eat there yet.
Thanks,
Curt
Carne asada tacos and tamales wrapped in banana leaves--Yuca is short for Yucatan. Hell, some folks even eat burgers there.

A place strangely called SAPP Coffee Shop 5183 Hollywood Blvd Los Angeles, CA phone: (323) 665-1035 has been getting good notices for cheap Thai on another channel.

Nice site. I'd add Yuca's on Hillhurst and Jay's Jayburger at Santa Monica & Virgil. Also, Atch Kotch at Vine & Fountain.

I thought I could get Traveller's Cheques in Euro, though. If that was the case, you would think that it would be accepted like cash, just like they are in the U.S., no?
That is my understanding, but I have not used them in many years.
Me either. The only thing I remember about traveller's checks is that you get a slightly better exchange rate on them--at least in an office of the issuing company. Is it worth running across town for the difference? No.

Well it was bound to happen sooner or later, but disaster has stuck.
I woke up yesterday to find my new digicam in a pool of water on the table next to a knocked over vase. The cats were looking at me as if they never even set foot on the table. I thought it was ok at the time though since I could power the camera on and take a picture. I let it dry out all day.
When I came home, the camera would not turn on and continues to be stubborn and not play nice. It looks as if I am going to have to replace it in the next couple days.
Ben
Far better to have had this happen at home than in the middle of your trip. BTW, on the subject of cameras, you might want to pack some extra batteries--they seem to die in the most inconvenient places. I seem to recall unsuccessfully scouring San Gimignano for a battery for a dead camera.
