  1. You're darn right! It is a well known fact that how good something tastes is proportional to how bad it is for you. Thus duck fat would have made the dish sublime! Ooh I wanna see the picture of my silly lemon twists which were perfectly straight Daddy-A I was thinking of naming that pulled lamb shank sandwitch "Canadian Caveman Pulled-Lambwich with Foraged Greens"
  2. I've discovered a love for plating food. I tried to make a twist of lemon peel for te lamb stew but it didn't work ;p Really really good stew last night. I can't wait to try that one. Daddy-A you going to be making that recipe we made up last night? We expect some Smoked Lamb Shank by next week! I'll make the Bannock! Chef Tony has got to be one of the funniest chef's I've ever met. I was almost rolling on the floor when he went into his tirade on people improperly cooking pasta! Moosh post them pics! I wanna see!
  3. Wow I didn't know they had Okonomiyaki there. I used to eat there BEFORE they made sushi. It was all burgers and such. In fact their avocado burger was really really good. Then I was really surprised to see sushi on the menu and now the burgers are all but gone I will have to try the okonomyaki anyways!
  4. I'm going this weekend then for some 'to go'.
  5. Oh Yeah and don't forget Jang Mo Jib on Robson (across the street from Gyoza King). Open till 5am on friday night and saturday night and pretty decent korean food! Their seafood pancake is tastey as is their Stone Bowl rice mmm
  6. now that is NOT fair!! free dessert for ladies with a drink? Where's the love for the men??
  7. The only thing missing from Go Fish is the newspaper. If they had that it would be THE best spot in town
  8. Normans hands down. Very fresh, ridiculously cheap. My first day living on the drive I walked there and bought two bags of veggies and fruit. The girl put em all through and said "3.49". I said "for the apples?" she said "total" $3.49? I had a $10 ready to go. I had to change plans and dig for change! Damn. I miss commercial.
  9. Ooh that is pretty late: I (being asian) usually eat at places like #9 restaurant (landsdown mall, richmond) when I have the midnight munchies Otherwise there is also the Vineyard on 4rth which I think is open to 3am (they used to be open 24 hours I think.
  10. Really? I eat at the gastown Guu fairly often and I didn't even notice this! Will have to try it! I assume it's a small little pancake unlike the one at Don's which is humongous!
  11. Okonomyaki or Japanese Pancake originated in Hiroshima and each city in Japan has a slightly different take on the ingredients, but in general it's super tastey. Generally ingredients include: - Flour - Water - Eggs - Cabbage - Octopus/shrimp/meat/poultry - mushrooms - green onion - bonito The BEST I've ever had is at Don Quixote. Unfortunately it's located in Osaka, Japan. Okonomyaki in Vancouver? Where can you find some? Here are the one's I know of: - Modern Club - Good classical Okonomyaki (they even have the noodle versions) - The Clubhouse - an odd place for it but it's not bad - Hanabi - Located inside the aberdeen mall in Richmond. Surprisingly good Tako-Yaki AND okonomyaki. This is a bit of a hidden gem AND there's free Wifi in the food court! Any others?
  12. Oh I have to disagree with this one! I had bubble world a couple times and found their drinks to leave this powdery aftertaste in my mouth. Boobies...i mean bubbles were either really hard or too sweet. Oasis on the otherhad has good bubble tea! The one in coquitlam was empty when I went in and it took a full 35 minutes to make two bubble teas which didn't taste very good. I wonder if this one is part of the same chain.
  13. I went to jack's Loft pretty often in high school till my friend's car was stolen by someone working there (they took your jackets as a "service"). Stopped going after that. Now I hang with Dragon Ball
  14. How late do you get off work though? Are we talking like 1am or like 9pm?
  15. Nice pics canucklehead! I still havn't gotten mine off the old camera but I'll just say they look like yours and be happy heheh. Lordy I'm lazy!
  16. *** WARNING *** Do not allow ikea furniture to burn. And definately do not burn ikea funiture and roast marshmellows on it. Not unless you plan on achieving a drug induced sugar maintaining, buring glue finishing state of mind. It does make pretty coloured flames though.
  17. Neil, I've heard WAY too much about the hanger steak now. Oh my god. If thoughtbox is who I think it is I probably mentioned it to him too. I'm going to need to find some time to try it in the coming weeks. I HAVE had the pudding though and I will admit that it was sublime. I believe the two girls I was with may have gone into some kind of orgasmic state when they tasted it. That or we had some kind of momentary earthqauke, not sure...
  18. I dig the Taro too. It IS quite filling though. Hmm Miniature bubbles that's something I will need to check out. You know for some reason there doesn't seem to be much of a choking hazard in the tapioca balls. Not sure if it is because they are soft and malleable. But they seem pretty easy down the gullet
  19. Coconut Jelly is pretty tastey too. I'm still a fan of the pearls though. There's nothing odd about not liking bubble tea though. I have friends who had gag reflexes when they tried it.
  20. Bubble tea has become a fact of life in Vancouver. I remember being in Seattle 5 years ago and not seeing any bubble tea there. This year there are tonnes. The bubbles are taking over. So assuming you've been assimilated. Where do you go for your drinky/tapioka treat? 1. Dragon Ball - King Edward and oak 2. Oasis - 41st and West Boulevard mmmm bubble tea...mmmm...
  21. There just isnt time to cook with working late and trying to get some physical activity in like Ultimate or Rock climbing or Sailing (racing can be pretty hard on you But I DO like to take the time to cook. We need 36 hour days or something... - Fujiya is a great place for takout sushi that's just supermarket style along with T&T - Sumarai Sushi if you're hungry and want gigantic fish (quality is questionable) - Stepho's Takeout is a great value (not exactly healthy though) - I really miss the Onigiri in Japan at 7-11 or other fine establishments (it's a triangle of rice with fish or other stuff inside wrapped in seaweed...SO good and so simple and portable. - Congee noodle house! mmmm the feel of Hong Kong style takeout at HK prices.
  22. Hmmm isn't Nu on stilts over the ocean. Now doesn't the crown own everything below the low tide line?
  23. If they got rid of the Guyere soup, the world would suddenly become a more dismal place. But I agree that having specials is good! Right now I'm still working through the menu so I don't mind not having them just yet
  24. Tony, I picked up your book on a whim from a used bookstore a year ago (Kitchen Confidential). It was the first cooking story related book I've ever read and I have to admit it got me into food. Really into food and cooking and all that jazz. Thanks. Loved the book, gave it to two friends and it's making its way around. I'm looking forward to seeing how the TV show pans out. Funny how you called the Hell's Kitchen results. I was thinking the same thing about Mike - conniving, evil, and a little eccentric - perfect.
  25. I will attest that these burgers taste better after a day in the Dinghy's However I wouldn't rate them that highly. I used to eat a lot at Red Onion but I'm afraid they've gone downhill since my younger days. Moderne burger is pretty decent. I still havn't found a place that blew me away. The Foie Gras Burger at Feenie's was interesting but still not what I would call a mind blowing burger (side note, the shepherds pie there IS mind blowing). Honerable Mention : Little Billie's Hideaway in Burnaby at the base of burnaby mountain. Burgers are juicy and messy, fries are awesome! Oct 16 hey? I'll see if I have room in the calendar for that excursion hee hee. Wes
