  1. Based on my one lunch, I wouldn't agree that this is better than STH. I will however be back with my wife to try other stuff.

I'm not sure how this can be interpreted as unfair as I just had one meal there, hence the caveat.

As it was a business lunch (as stated in my post) and we were sharing an appetizer and entree I felt the proper thing to do was to ask my guest what she would like to order. I would clearly have gone for some of the more adventurous items on the menu if I were alone or with my wife, also stated in my post.

In any event, it's pretty unlikely that I would ever introduce myself as a sophisticate.. seems a bit pompous.

As to the heat issue, I just prefer szechuan dishes with some nice heat and there was very little of it there. I didn't say that food quality was determined by it.

  2. I enjoyed lunch yesterday. I found the szechuan dumplings to be excellent in both taste and texture. The usual crap available in the suburbs tend to be thick and starchy. These on the other hand were extremely light and tender, excellent. I did feel the sauce they were bathed in could have been hotter. I suppose I could have asked prior to ordering but I wasn't sure how their standard dumplings would register on the heat scale. We shared an entre our waiter suggested, chicken and peanuts in a nice albeit unremarkable sauce. I forget the name of the dish. It was good but nothing special. As I was on a business lunch, I deferred to my guest but when I return, I will seek out the more traditional chinese dishes I noticed several asians in the room were enjoyig.

We met the owner, Sonia who is a charming hostess. She mentioned the resaurant just won best restaurant in the US awarded by a chinese newspaper in Las Vegas. She then showed us a picture of her with Martin Yan. Oh and her chef formerly cooked for the President of China.

  3. 2022 Nottingham Way. It has been lauded here as (incorrectly) Szechuan Garden.

OK, so I'm going here next Monday with a business colleague for lunch. Is there anything I should look out for to order and do you think they have the same chef as for dinner?

I'm one of those who really loves Szechuan Tasty House in Philly so I'm looking forward to this place. I'll report back.

  4. Pepperoncini peppers?!  Is nothing sacred?  To be authentic, sport peppers must be used.  And celery salt.  Sales would no doubt take off if they would do it properly.  I'd buy a couple, anyway, if I was in the neighborhood.

Ah brings back memories from my college days in Illinois. I have yet to find a really authentic Chicago Hot Dog in this area.

Chicago red hots are just about the only food that I look back on fondly from that period in my life, I mean the deep dish pizza nonsense...

  5. Tattoni’s was a little known gem of a restaurant in the Chambersburg section of Trenton, NJ for years.  It has since moved to the suburbs (Rt. 33 in Hamilton Twp.) and is now a BYOB.  The menu is limited and not written down, but the food is great and more than reasonable in price.

Tom, is Dom's son still cooking and is the food still as good as when they were on Chestnut Street? I used to love this place, especially the limited menu and the almost surly all business waitresses that delivered the food. Where else can you get a 3 course lunch for 8 bucks anywhere and really great food to boot.

  6. My husband and I, and our friends, are lots of fun and totally not creepy, so we can pretty much guarantee a lovely evening.

Sorry about the above post but for some reason the edit key was unavailable for me to correct it.

I just thought this line was particularly humorous for those of us who dine with others we have never met. My kids both were amazed that I would host a wine tasting some time ago for a nice group of EG'ers, some of whom I'd met previously but others whom I'd only "met" online.

Anyway, do let us know how the evening turned out.

  7. Through sheer dumb luck and cosmically awesome timing my husband and I managed to score a last-minute reservation to Talula's Table this coming Tuesday, November 18th. We have three seats currently available, and, given the Talula's love on this board, we figured we'd open it up to the fine members of eGullet.

    The details are as follows:

    - Dinner is at 7:00 sharp

    - BYOB, $10 corking fee for the entire table

    - $90 prix fixe per person, which, after tax and gratuity, typically comes to around $120-$125 per person.

My husband and I, and our friends, are lots of fun and totally not creepy, so we can pretty much guarantee a lovely evening.

If you're interested in joining us, please PM me. We haven't gotten the menu yet, but I believe Aimee said she'd send it to us on Sunday. We have to let Talula's know our final headcount on Sunday, so this offer is valid until 5:00 EST on Saturday the 15th.

We're offering the seats on a first-come first-serve basis, so before you respond please be absolutely certain that you are a) available and b) ok with the price.

    Any takers?

  8. I think it's better than Szechuan Tasty House and Chung King Garden, which I'd say are the two best Szechuan places in Philly.  Tasty House is indeed tasty, but I think they tend to be a little greasy.

I'm curious as to what you've had at Tasty House. I've been there a few times and never found anything even remotely greasy. I love that place especially those golden coins of eggplant, but I must try Szechuan Garden with all these folks so keen on it.

  9. I kind of remember going to a dim sum place in that area but not on Nottingham Way. The place I went to was further out toward Robbinsville I think and it was quite good.

I'll have to try this place as it's pretty close to me and there is nothing here even remotely good save for Chinatown Cafe in Langhorne which used to be Joe's Peking Duck House on Race Street in Philly.

  10. Bob, next time you go be sure to have them prepare some house made stuffed cabbage. They are like $1.50 a piece and they taste amazingly good. The cabbage is so tender and the meat filling is superb.

I also love the giant Polish rye breads on sale just next to the meat counter. Big oversized slices at prices less than the usual garbage I get at the supermarkets around here.

  11. We were just in Philadelphia for the weekend and had Sunday breakfast at Carman's, which in my opinion remains one of the best breakfast spots in the USA. There was a breakfast special of braised brisket with rich gravy, served with eggs, potatoes and a pumpernickel roll. I also opted to include bacon (recommended on the menu board). While eating it, I felt a little guilty that I hadn't first spent 5 hours working in the fields.

Care to share with us where the esteemed Mr. Shaw and wife dined besides Carman's? Also, did you happen to pick up one of her business cards?

  12. FYI, I got an email from Joe Canal's Lawrenceville the other day:

  13. I just picked up a 2 pack of 2003 Whitehall Lane Napa Cabernet and Cab Reserve at the Newtown store on clearance for $69.00 which is a discount of 50%.

They have lots left, at least they did around noon today. I've read a lot about this wine and am particularly looking forward to trying the reserve.

It's now $49.99. w/ today's sale. And I think all orders have free shipping not just over $200 at least that's what my e-mail said; 'tho the web says >$200

Thanks, I guess it's like buying stock, you never know when it's on its low. In any event, this is a banging wine even at $69

  14. I am going to a concert in Asbury Park - is this far from Delorenzo's tomato pies in Trenton.  How long of a drive is - I would hit it either on my way to the concert or back to NYC.  I guess my question is - is it worth driving out of my way for?  I'm a big fan of pizza.

Just go, Robbinsville makes more sense than the original. You will love the pies here plus the NJTP interchange is not too far for your ride back to NY.

  15. I would throw the new Sal Deforte's in the finer dining mix ; now located in Ewing, it looks nicer thanh its original location , and the food is certainly quite good.

Not really close to Trenton at all but I agree that the food is every bit as good as it was when they were in the burg. A nice plus is that Debbie and her mom are excellent hosts and you can byo which is a plus.

I used to love taking my girls there when they were much younger. Russell used to make them Shirley Temples at the bar and they just thought that was the end all.
