  1. Tom, he will enjoy this place especially if he likes seafood. I'd say to get a table outside on the patio but given the time of year...

I'm not too keen on dining out on major holidays but the food here is consistantly good albeit a bit pricey for the area.

  2. I plan on making a day trip to Philly soon. What a dilemma; do I sample cheesesteaks or hot dogs? Or a little of both? I only have so much room. My favorite thing to eat is an Italian Hot Dog.

John, you already have arguably the best Italian Hot Dogs where you live so my suggestion would be to try neither the hot dog nor the cheesesteak but go for the roast pork italian sandwich instead. Many here will agree that when made properly this sandwich can be trancendent. Either Tony Luke's on Oregon Avenue or Johns Roast Pork on Snider Avenue, both in South Philly. If you must have a cheesesteak, Tony Luke's is as good as they come.

  3. As for surf 'n turf, I've just never gotten it. Cute name, interesting idea, but unappealing when eaten.

A far, far better combination is the Italian hot dog from North Jersey: served on a half-moon Italian round bread, two natural-casing beef dogs (from Best Provisions of Newark), peppers, onions and potatoes, all fried in the same fryer (not the bread, just what's put inside).

Bob, I must agree with you. I have never gotten the idea of a hot dog and fish cake combo. I tried one at Johnny Hots when visiting my daughter who was working on Delaware Ave but was underwhelmed. The Italian Hot Dog in my view, is the perfect combination of potatoes, peppers and a great hot dog all smothered in mustard on a good torpedo roll.

  4. I think their open face meatball sandwich far outshines their burgers. It comes bathed in a really excellent marinara sauce and the meatballs are chopped vs. large round balls of beef.

I never got the burger rep in the first place, it's decent enough but nowhere near some of the others I've had.

  5. There's an amazing photo and recipe of Peter McAndrews "Sunday Gravy" in the current (09/09) Esquire.  He credits the famiglia of his second generation Italian-American wife.

Meatballs, sausages, on-the-bone pork ribs with extra bones for good measure stock the huge pot.

So, has this been on the menu?

Not to my recollection Charlie and not on their website menu either. This is close to how I make my gravy. http://modomiorestaurant.com/menu

  6. I think you refer to Peter Luger's in Brooklyn. While the better NYC steakhouses do steak to perfection, they also usually offer other non-steak items that I have found to be equally well executed. Most notable is Sparks on E 46th who does fish as well as any top rated seafood restaurant.

When I patronize a top flight NYC steakhouse, or really any place that does steaks really well, I tend not to think about ordering anything else. This may be because my wife is not a big fan so I don't make them often at home.

  7. My teenage son talked us into a dinner at the Philly Fogo.  Great space (an old bank?), great service, but only so-so food. Perhaps I expected too much.  The meat was OK, some great some a bit tough.  What surprised me was the salad bar and sides.  Chicken salad was badly overcooked, potato salad was made with russet pots and was mealy, mashed potatoes were over-whipped and glue-y.  Was it an off-night or is this typical?

Forget Fogo de Chao and go here for better rodizio at more than half the price:

  8. Had my first Sketch burger tonight on my way to the Root cocktail competition at Silk City.  Turkey burger with cheddar. harissa aioli, pickles, lettuce and tomato.  Awesome.  And almost too big to eat.  Can't wait to go back and try some of the specials that also look amazing...

Katie, do not fail to order the fries. You will not be disappointed I promise you.

James: I have not but everyone else in my house has. It's in a former beauty salon and is ice cream only, no food. I remember one of your past posts about it and thought you'd wnat to know...

  9. hit up sketch the other day. if the burger was half the size it is i'd adore it; as it is it's merely freaking delicious, juicy enough to make up for the overcooking (next time i'll order it rare and see what comes out).  the people running it are super nice, the whole shop has a great vibe.

the fries are ideal.  they're fantastic.  i'm with holly -- they're exactly what i've been looking for.  (i do have a soft spot for the kind of 1/4" frozen fries that everyone serves.  i won't deny it.)

As I'm reading this post, I'm snacking on reheated fries from Sketch. They still taste amazing even out of the oven the next day. My daughter and her boyfriend went yesterday.

FYI MrBigJas: Goodnoe's opened up on Sycamore Street in Newtown last week next to the Lukoil station.

  10. So has anyone tried a new restaurant that was great?  We go down to the shore quite a bit, but we're going to be down on vaca and like to do a date night or two.

We thought we'd try Blackfish in Stone Harbor or maybe Axelson's.  It's been a couple of years since we've been there.

Anybody else have recommendations for restaurants from Ocean City down to Cape May??

By the way, a good family restaurant is Menz's out on 47 near the villas.  Not cheap, but it's certainly an interesting restaurant.  HIGHLY recommend reservations.

I'm having a really tough time seeing Blackfish and Menz's mentioned in the same post. While Blackfish is a very good restaurant with many inventive dishes, Menz's might well be the worse restaurant I've ever been to in my life.

The very first year I took my family to Cape May about 15 years ago, I asked at the hotel where we were staying for a great recommendation that would be a standout. Without the slightest hesitation, he said "go to Menz's". After a ridiculously long wait for reasons I just can not begin to fathom, we were served the single most horrible meal ever. Even my 2 girls 7 and 9 at the time hated it and they were and continue to be really adventurous eaters. This place should be avoided at all costs, it's even worse than the institutional food served at the Lobster House.

With some places I feel time might help turn things around for the better but I doubt that about this place. I suspect that the food is still the same greasy, tasteless and non appealing mess it's always been.

  11. I wish my burger came out medium rare as asked but it was tasty nonetheless. As I knew the burgers were huge beforehand, I simply ordered mine with fried onions and it was still unwiedly.

I really enjoyed those fries...so Holly will they score a mention on your site?

  12. What it does well is good burgers for a cheap price that are a step-up in experience from McDonalds and Burger King.

In this context I would agree. It's just that down here in the Philly area, all the buzz about how really great the burgers were just didn't live up to the hype IMO. The fries though, well that's another story completely.

  13. I was somewhat disappointed in their burgers but really enjoyed the hand cut fries. I have had truly transcendant burgers elsewhere and 5 guys just doesn't come near to living up to the hype. What's up with only being able to get them well done? Who wants a well done hamburger anyway???

  14. If it's the same place/people- George and his brother may have a couple of places. Their upscale restaurant, Pier House, is actually attached to and adjacent to La Mer. This was the site of the other restaurant, The Water's Edge.

Sadly, one of our favorite Cape May places to dine was Water's Edge. It had it all, creative and inventive food served by a knowledgable and caring staff with a spectacular ocean view. Who could ask for more?

  15. I had the oportunity of trying this place for lunch today and was quite impressed. I'd been meaning to get over here for a while but it was worth the wait.

First, I agree completely with Bob's comments entirely (right down to the medium rare asked for and the medium well received!) and throw in some stuff I learned today.

First, their burgers are 8 oz patties consisting of 20% fat as all good burgers should be and grilled on a flattop. I asked what other ingredients went into the patty mix and got some esoteric reply like the seasonings and flattop remnants when what I was really looking for was what other meat was used.

These burgers, even medium well, oozed with juices right into a perfectly paired Le Bus roll that seemed created just for this size burger. It sopped up most of the juices and the carmelized onions were really a perfect compliment to roll, burger and cheese (American).

On to the fries, handcut, well one of those pull down machine jobs that cut them nicely and with skins on. I'm assuming they were quickly flash fried before the second dip in the frier because like Bob said, they were excellent, some of the best I've had anywhere.

Note to Holly: I believe this place warrants at least a mention in Holly Eats, if not 5 grease stains that I rate it.

  16. We went to George's which is a small greek diner and it was AMAZING,  the food was so fresh and so simply prepared, we loved it and the price was outstanding for Cape May, we will be back many more times.  And the people who own/work there are just great, you feel like you are visting family.

If this is the place I think it is, George is Gus Andy's brother who owns La Mer and many other properties in Cape May. Is it on Beach across from Uncle Bills?

This is the greatest place for a cheap and well prepared breakfast. Forget about the other upscale yupie places for breakfast, this is the place locals go on and off season.
