  1. Four of us ate there about six months ago.  So loud it's uncomfortable.  Good waiter.  Food was fair, at best.  Their trademark short ribs were a bit dry and when my wife and I agree that we've made better, we know this is not a place we'd go back to.  The other two people are very easy to please, but they thought it wasn't very good.

Maybe it was an off night?

Agree about the noise level and I hope it was indeed an off night. We have found the food to be great both times we've gone but the space really is confining and the noise is bad. I'd go again for sure but maybe early or late on a weekend night or perhaps midweek.

You should try it again, must be a reason why so many people who post here and others travel so far to eat there.

  2. Um, not sure exactly what you're talking about, but my cheeseburger was cryovac sealed from Omaha Steaks and defrosted a couple of days ago, and the Pleasant Ridge Reserve is the cheese on top from DiBruno's.  A several week old cheeseburger? Where's that pukey icon when I need it?

I picked up the WINE a few weeks ago, at either Delaware and Snyder or possibly Franklin Mills, since I went shopping at both within a few days of each other and don't remember what was bought where.

Here's to hoping you were kidding and I just didn't get it.

Yes I was kidding, those Omaha Steak burgers taste way better than their steaks imo.

  3. A mercifully short night at work (we had a private party that was over early) allowed me the luxury of cooking myself a nice dinner tonight.  I cracked open a bottle of Hope Estate Hunter Valley Shiraz 2003 ($9.99) to accompany my Pleasant Ridge Reserve cheeseburger and veggies.  I'd picked this up several weeks ago, but a quick search reveals a bit of it still around, particularly in Ardmore.

Several weeks old cheeseburger Katie? Even from Ardmore seems a bit too long in the fridge

  4. Funny this is up. I tried to make it here today on my journey from Allendale PA towards home but it didn't come up on my GPS. It started raining and figured it best to get home. I love traveling and eating in places I haven't before as I have to actually research a area for good food. Lucky I have a business lunch at Gramercy Tavern tomorrow.

Really don't miss the restaurant business any longer.

Try plugging in Bridge Street in Lambertville as Kline Court is really a small side street, even more of an alley.

  5. I've been trying to expand my horizons for Chinese food recently, in particular I've been jonesing for the spicy dumplings and Szechuan beef at Szechuan Tasty House in Chinatown.  Is there anything that comes close to matching that type of cuisine out in the Collegeville/Phoenixville area, just in case (like today) I get a serious lunchtime urge for a good burn?

I've never had anything close to what can be had at STH anywhere, particularly those wonderful dumplings and gold coins

  6. Again, not attorney here. Who is to say that the backback did indeed contain the laptop? This guy Jack says so, but can he prove that?  If not, he may just be running an insurance fraud. If I'm on the jury, I want to see some proof that the laptop was really there. I got a backpack that I may just leave someplace. If they find it without my laptop in it I will claim it was. Even if my laptop is at home

Any wonder why insurance rates keep going up? Not suggesting that you'd do this of course, but this potential scam pales in comparison to the bump and sue crap that the Russian mob have elevated to an art form. You know the one where you are driving down the street and get hit by someone and next thing you know your insurance company is paying out on a bogus claim?

  7.

Late breaking news eh? This EGullet thing is indeed far reaching and I guess not be f'd with...

    Signed Jeff L Holmes

    Actually Jeff..

Kretch and I were discussing it a month ago over drinks in person and we never posted it till yesterday.

I only posted to see opinions not embarass the restaurant, free speech can be exercised with caution. The decision to replace was made prior to my post but I was co-incidentally informed of it.

EG had nothing to do with the decision.

There is already a website for that kind of behaviour, it's called shamelessrestaurants.com......

Oh, so you admit it was Kretch..

Seriously though, it is an interesting topic for this forum and the country at large. I totally understand Mike's point of personal responsibility and agree except in this or similar cases provided above by some dude who obviously works for Lexus-Nexus.

It's too true that people seem to want to call the folks at 1 800 I'll sue the shit out of you before attempting to try resolving matters personally. Kind of helps me in understanding how elementary school kids around here threaten their friends with legal action because their mommy or daddy happen to sue people for a living, but that's a whole other topic.

  8. V, the title of this thread is interesting. Did this actually happen to you and if so, you ought to drop the hypothetical part of the title.

In any event, I agree with mano on this one and would certainly pursue the owners of the establishment. They may not be responsible for replacement of the laptop in a legal sense, but the fact that one of the staff told you that it had been found and put in the office sems to me to create some responsibility on the owners part. One would hope they would at least make some offer of a settlement to you.

  9. My wife and I just came back yesterday (through the storms!) from a great weekend in Lambertville.  First time visiting the area, we had a nice meal on Friday at Ota-Ya (which, if I get around to it, I will post about separately), then we paid a visit to No 9 on Saturday.

Can't wait to get back to No. 9. If you ever get down this way again, be sure to try Ota-Ya in Newtown. PA. It's much better than the one in Lambertville.

  11. I have the very same wok and got it from Tane as well. She is delightful and a pleasure to deal with. I also have a few other woks I bought in Philly's Chinatown that have served me well over the years.

I do love the cast iron wok from Wok Shop but I find the temperature is not as hot on my gas grill with the metal ring I have to use. I just keep the flame on high longer than I normally would to get the heat where I want it. This thing does retian heat well once the desired temps are reached though.

  12. As far as your hypothesis that there is a direct correlation between the age of a restaurant and quality; I'm sorry but I can't agree.

Excellent point here. When we first moved into the area we now live (Bucks County PA) over 20 years ago, I polled all sorts of people as to where to get a great meal. Many people recommended a place called Georgine's. We tried it and can honestly tell you that is was the absolute worst meal of my life. The place has been in business over 30 years.

What I have learned is that most people's idea of good food is not having to cook at home. I feel most people in this country have pedestrian tastes or worse as evidenced by so many truly bad restaurants that are still open and even flourishing. Now I'll cop to being a food and wine snob in this forum for those who know me, but come on people really

  13. Thinking of going here (Bound Brook place) with friends first weekend in May. Has anyone been lately and care to comment on it. I did notice some early reviews included menu items that still appear on the menu on Girasole's website. This is not a good sign unless the website hasn't been updated in quite a while.

  14. Tomorrow's review of Fogo de Chao gives it 2 bells, same as Picanha as noted in the first post of this thread.

To quote LaBan "if authentically home-cooked flavors are their priority, adventure eaters will fare better at Picanha, a relatively modest diner-turned churrascaria that serves Northeast Philadelphia's growing Brazilian population. This casual BYO has plastic table covers, TV's playing Brazilian soap operas, taxidermy and trinkets for decor. But the meats coming off its charcoal fired grill recently were consistently superior in taste and tenderness to what I'd just eaten at Fogo de Chao".

Adventure eaters, sounds like he's talking to us. Let's see, 2 bells for Fogo and the cost of dinner without drinks is $44.50 plus parking could bring the tab to well over $60 per person. Contrast that with Picanha at $17 per person, free parking and BYO- any questions???

  15. They have 2 good dishes.

    The burger.

    The fries.

I didn't think that anyone actually ate anything else at Rouge, at least I don't and I think after your post they certainly may have pause

I have always really liked their burgers and fries but aside from them and a few drinks, can't say one way or the other about the food there.

  16. That 'purdy-ness' sold my wife on it.  The K originally replaced a metal smoker, but I kept a propane grill next to it for 'fast' weeknight grilling.  Within a few months, I figured out how to light the K and get up to temp in about the same amount of time it takes the gas burner to pre-heat.  The secret was the 500K BTU propane torch (aka the jet engine).

Yeah, that really is a piece of art. I think for the extra $$ it's worth it to get one with the tile work on it. They will probably last damn near foever. I also like the combo idea which I don't get with my smokey mountain. It just seems to too much of a fuss to throw coals into the chimney, get the thing cranked up and grill just a few steaks.

That's the reason I just got the Konro ceramic grill. I'll be testing it our this weekend.

  17. do you tell the guy manning the grill you want the meat pink?  when I tell him the pinker the better, that is what he pulls off the grill for me.

No since every time I've gone there I get the all you can eat deal. I might rethink this approach in light of what you've just mentioned though.

There is a bit of a language barrier with some of the servers there. That is to say I speak zero Portugese and they speak little English. I suppose I might have a word with one of the guys that I remembered spoke English pretty well and tell him my preference and ask if it would be possible to get rarer meats.

  18. For all you Kaiken fans. Canal's @ $8.49

    Best,

    Mike

Not to plug Canals, but they will match anyone's price in NJ as long as you bring in the add. I've done this about 4 times now at the Lawrenceville store. I've been drinking Liberty School and their regular price was like $15 or something. Found it on wine access at $10 and they matched it.

Edited to add, just think how convenient it would be to actually be able to comparison shop in our own friggin state!

  19. If you're considering the BGE, take a look at the Kamados.  Beautiful yard art and much thicker ceramic construction.  I saw pics a while ago of a clone of the Kamados that looked very nice, but I think they came with bigger price tags...

If he's balking at the price of the Weber, I think he'll get sticker shock when he looks at the Kamado's. The #5 is $700 before shipping which will probably add $100 or so to the total. This works out to almost twice the cost of say the Weber Performer.

  20. Going tonight, Just passed by the joint and the skinny guy that does temps was manning the grill.

Let us know if the meats were cooked at the proper temps. Proper temps for me are rare and even med rare. Last time we went it seemed that there were more than a few really well done, no likey well done.

  21. imagine it's a monday, you're off work, the boy's in day care. you were thinking of going to the home opener but you don't have tickets, so it's lookin like a free day off for the two of you.

where would you go to lunch?  price not really no object, but not that much of a concern.  just something really good, preferrably downtown.

a lot of places are closed mondays, is part of the reason i'm asking.  the other is that i've been out of the nice dining scene for a while.

James, if it's open Monday's which I think it is, my choice would be for you and Mrsbigjas to go to Monk's Cafe.

We went this past Saturday for lunch before taking our 21 year old daughter to Spamalot. Both were excellent! I'm sure you've been but it's really so good especially those Belgian fries and biers.
