  1. You made a great choice with Estia. We love this place and a large part of that has to do with how the entire staff makes you feel welcome, almost at home. I've been 3 times and each time was really a great meal. It's too bad that the whole fish (which seems to be their specialty) wasn't part of your menu but it sounds like you did just fine without it. I agree with Rae about the calamari, best I've had anywhere.

Too bad also about Osteria's poor handling of your party. It sounds like it all worked out for you and I'll add my Mazel Tov too!

  2. I stopped by the C-View several weeks ago when I was down in Cape May because it was the last night before it changed hands.  At least that's what I'd been told. Seems there's new ownership.

That's not good. Usually means everything changes. I had the pleasure of meeting the owner there a few times and he seemed like he knew what he was doing. He had a few old school waitresses and really good barkeeps on staff. I could be wrong but I got the feeling he just came in to collect the $$$

  3.   And has anyone been to the C-View Inn - someone just told me they have the best chicken wings, and my husband likes them with a nice beer for a snack!

Thanks and have a great weekend everyone.

(This is my 3rd attempt at posting)

I love this place as it is so un Cape May but pretty decent bar food. And yes, the wings really are quite good even though I am not a big fanof wings in general. I love it for the local scene, as that is mostly who hangs out there along with after hours resto workers. Prices are cheap and there is no "C" view or any other water view other than what spills on the floor :raz: Also family friendly

  4. When at Renny Farms in Wrightstown, I try to stop at Birchwood Dairy, which appears to be represented at the market.  Man, their raw milk is awesome -- comes unskimmed of cream, which rises to the top of the gallon jug.  Yogurt's pretty tasty, too.  I was less impressed with the butter, but I only tried it once.  Nice people.  Glad that Bucks residents are getting access to the bounty of the county.

Birchwood Dairy appears to be in Canada, how will it be represented at the farmers market, by another farm that carries the products? Do you have any info on Renny Farms other than it appears to be a perennial Farm?

  5. Somehow LaBan left off Grey Lodge in his burger blitz this morning. Anyone ever hear of Snow White luncheonette? Sounds like it may be worth a visit, $4.00 hand formed fresh patties from the meat store around the block...Then there's Rouge at $15 bucks.

  6. Methinks we need to stop seeking nefarious intent where there's merely good intentions and a will to spread the gospel of the Grey Lodge.  The beer selection and whiskey selection alone are worth a special trip.  The menu and quality of the food is a bonus in my book.  The Grey Lodge is a fine and well run establishment that ought to have our support rather than unfounded speculation on the intent of its proponents.

Assuming you were referring to my post, please understand I don't really think Rich has anything to do with the joint except to enjoy their really great food. It was posted totally in jest, thought that was obvious but I guess not

  8. There was another thread where someone had an awful experience at Lacroix with a baby dining within earshot of their table. The parents lived at the hotel and the complaint was that there should have been more of a private room to accomodate resident families.

Like Chowfun, we too have taken our very young daughters out to fine dining restaurants albeit almost 20 years ago. As we tend to be considerate people (she more so than me for sure) we also planned early dining times and at the first sign of trouble, one of us quickly whisked the child away for a bit to calm her. We would both have been mortified at prolonged screeming or such and certainly would have left the place if this ever happened. We never had any problems with other guests, to the contrary, people seemed happy to see mostly well behaved little ones and attentive and caring parents.

I find there is pretty much a lack of this sort of attentiveness to one's children in general but more specifically in a restaurant setting. I think it speaks to our culture of over indulgance and it really annoys me no end.

The question for the restaurant is much more complex. In this age of lawsuits for the most ridiculous reasons, I suspect there might be legal exposure and most places would not outright refuse to seat an infant or toddler. If handled adroitly, however, I think seating infants at tables out of earshot of most guests might work. It is a difficult question and one certainly dependent on where one lives and what the culture is used to.

  9. That's probably why I got the great deal on the Laguiole cork screws at the Doylestown store. I'll look for some of the Reidel stemware to go along with the cork screws. Put them together with a bottle of wine and you've got a great gift for any occasion.

That's just what I ended up doing. I got 4 Champagne flutes (Spiegelau Vino Grande Champagne Flute) for like 4 or 5 bucks a piece along with a nice bottle of Prosecco for my brother-in-law's birthday tomorrow.

  10. So the doings of the restaurant biz make no sense to yiu at all?  Stand in line.  Restaurateurs do baffling things all the time.  Maybe Dom's son just wanted to put his own take on things.  But not being smart enough to alert customers with signage or a voicemail when you called for a reservation sounds like par for the course for some cafe owners.  They stay open sometimes despite themselves!

I'm gonna try to ride over there on Tuesday as well.  The curiosity is killing me.

Yeah, that would make sense if he recently started cooking and running the place. Fact is he's been there for years!

  11. Makes no sense at all in my view. If it is the same place with Dom's son in the kitchen (forget his name) then why change a name most in the area are familiar with? I think the utter lack of any decor along with the lack of a menu makes the place that much more appealing. Besides the Homestead Inn, Tatoni's was the only joint I know of in the area with no menu. I am of the belief that more places should adopt the European country restaurant standard of no menus. They do 3 or 4 things, pick one. This idea of 10 page menus is absurd.

I'll have to check this out and report back.

  12. I discovered that one of my frequent dining companions hadn't made it to Osteria yet, so, you know, I kind-of had to go...

Pizza with clams, mussels and ramps.

    gallery_23992_4247_25022.jpg

This is the first pizza I've seen in North America that reminds me of the pizza in Italy. I had never seen tiny mussels and clams in their shells on a pizza before I visited Italy. It was wonderful. This pizza looks outstanding and I am going to eat one tomorrow night...if I can get in that is.

  13. Quick question.  Anyone know what warrants the sumi charcoal to be $100 more expensive than the binchotan?  (That's a legit question, I'm not trying to be a smart ass).

Tim, that binchotan coal is a bitch to light. I tried everything including my chimney starter and couldn't get it lit. They say to use fuel gel paks but I didn't want to potentially smell or taste that in the food.

fyi, I am waiting for a call back from Kamada as soon as they get their container load of coconut shell charcoal. Check out this site, the stuff is supposed to be pretty great and it's a hell of a lot cheaper than the Japanese stuff.

  14. Phil, was your brother back in town or was all that food just for you?

Seriously, again really nice pictures and makes me pissed that I stopped off on my way back from Delaware last night to Tony Luke's for a roast pork Italiano instead of going to STH. Well, not really pissed I guess.

  15. Deidre Costello, are you out there???

I think the PLCB has decided, corporately speaking, to no longer speak to us.

Understandable, really, reading this thread of late. Not a whole lotta love.

I can't imagine someone telling Deidre or any other PALCB staffer not to offer comments or post useful information on this or any other board irrespective of the tone of some of the posters, myself included. I always found her posts particualry insightful and would welcome further posts if she's still out there.
