The thing is that kinda of food is expensive at first. Fish, seafood are expensive and I think JB deal nicely with the prices of the dishes. Restaurants in Montreal are not expensive, price are the same since a long time but ingredients are more and more expensive. I am sure these guys are doing this for the passion but I am sure they want to make some money also on top of that. I agree 100% with that and if they make enough to buy some nice bottles of wine, good!

I think it's easy to understand why! The critics rates restaurants for what they are. Moishes and Globe are 2 very different restaurants than Caprice and Bronte. Maybe for these kind of restaurant, they are really good? It's not only the score that is important but the complete critic. Globe and Moishes do not pretend to be La Chronique but maybe they are good at what they are doing. Globe is more a party restaurant were the food is always good, good service, a nice wine list (not fine cuisine) and Moishes is a true steak house. While Caprice is a french restaurant and Bronte is a mix of french, italian. I can't see any comparision between these 4 restaurants anyway. But all of these can be rated well or not even if their style is totally different.

I went to Joe Beef last minute friday night for the last service (21h30) and it was really good. I am maybe not the best reference since I know Fred really well but me and my friend had a nice dinner. Everything was up to what it is supposed to be, ''quality''. The place do not pretend to be ''haute gastronomie'' and it's fine like that. But don't get me wrong, the food was really good last night. I had some nice oysters and a lobster spaghetti that was really delicious. The lobster was cooked perfectly and the pasta were perfectly seasoned (not too much, so the lobster was tasting for real). My friend had a nice piece of beef that was looking good. Overall, the place is really small but it's good like that and if Fred and David continue on this way, the place will be really popular soon. The place feel warm, causy, I like it. The wine list, for sure I am never happy with the most restaurant list anyway, so my opinion is bullshit. The restaurant is new and I am sure the wine list will get better and better. They just need some good private imports to go with the oysters, some good Grand Cru Chablis like Dauvissat, Raveneau, Verget, Fèvre etc... These Chablis are not expensive and will go perfectly with some ''coquillage'' they have there. Maybe some nice Champagne would be good too. And I would like to see some good Rhones there, Cornas, Hermitage, CNdP and some Cote-Rotie (that would be perfect with the kinda of meat they serve).

So funny, the guy named Blue Hill and Masa??? These restaurants are far behind Toqué amigo. Le Bernardin is not always that good also, I have been disapointed 1/3 of the time there. As for the cheese from Quebec, you should try the Kenogami wich is considered to be the best Quebec cheese. It's easy to drop the names of the NY best restaurants, we don't care about these and we know all of them. Why comparing NYC to Toronto or Montreal? Susur is good, that's it. P.S. Toqué can be outstanding and easy to compare with some of the best restaurants in the world when Normand is into it.
-
Weird, normally the service is good. Friendly but good.
-
I have never been really impressed by Daniel V. I don't know about his new menu but I have been to his restaurant (also the old one) many many times. I prefer way more Toqué than Laurie. As for Utopie, I think it's not because of St-Rock but more of Quebec city in general. I think when you hit the bad season of the year, the mid-week are not easy.
-
For me, I prefer smaller portions than bigger. When you quit the restaurant and you are too full, you don't appreciate it really. I think the prices at CC&P are average and far to be expensive if we compare to many restaurants in Montreal that are really disapointing. I would like to know why you didn't like it?
-
Do you know if there a boutique for Gendron chocolates in downtown Montreal?
-
I have been disapointed some times at Toqué but when Laprise is there and it's good, its really good. I have been disapointed to many of the great restaurants in the world but it dosen't mean these restaurants are ''crap''. Hey, Keller restaurants got some bad reviews and it dosen't mean that Per Se or the French Laundry are ''crap''. Toqué is a excellent restaurant! P.S. Better than Laurie and Initiale for sure. And BTW, it's all about L'Utopie in Quebec city.

325$cdn for a liter. Armando is such a nice guy, really friendly and ready to talk about his oil. If you want to learn a bit more about his oil, here is his web-site: http://www.manni.biz/

The Per Me is more powerfull than the Per Mio Figlio.
-
jbbank, if you can wait 1 month I will be able to sell you 4 bottles. I will receive 20 bottles the first week of November. Also, wich one you want? The Per me or Per me figlio? I used to order 2 Per me Figlio out of 10 bottles but now I order only Per me.

I went to Daylight just for a beer and wish good luck to Patrick! The place is nice but I passed really fast. Treehouse is closed on Ste-Catherine but there is the new one on St-Laurent (between Prince Arthur and Sherbrooke), where Soto used to be. It's still one of my favorite, Juni is good too (on Laurier).

Not by the glass but a bottle of Rayas 89 at 180$ is the real deal !
-
ahah Go to Pizza da Nizza, Rayas 89 at 180$, La Mision Haut-Brion 89 at 220$. There is a ton of 88,89 and 90 that are really cheap! Rayas 89 is wonderfull.

Wine bar is not only to taste but if you want to have a glass of good wine and you don't want to open a full bottle at home, a wine bar is the perfect place. But if it's not possible to find what you like, it's just not usefull. Also, there is only young, young wines in wine bar in Montreal. Some 2000, 2001, 02,03. It can good to taste but sometimes we want more mature wines wich is impossible to find here also. Good wine at everyprices???? Well this is not what happenning here!

Nunez sell here (almost everywhere) for 22 to 26$cdn for the 500ml clear bottle. The opaque bottle sell for about 30-35$. I like Nunez but I am not a big fan of Spanish oil. I like it when you get more the taste of the olive and a nice pepery retro that kick.
-
Yeah, I heard it's only 30-35 places?
-
ahahah Hey, Prunatelli is not expensive but not available in Montreal. I was just asking if there is special shops I don't know that keep some of the best olive oils.
-
I don't care if some trendy (money spenders) are going to a good wine bar to be flashy or to spend their money on something they don't even appreciate. But it will be the occasion for people who appreciate it for real to have at least one place where we can have some top wines. We dont need La Tâche by the glass, just a good flight of 3 different vintage of La Conseillante is a good exemple. Hubert at Club Chasse et Pêche is openning Raveneau by the glass so I am sure a wine bar can do the same or more? A Chablis 2002 at 25$ the glass is way more difficult to sell than a 30-35$ glass of La Conseillante 1995. 3oz is just perfect in a glass, more than that is just too much even in a big glass. I am not asking to see Petrus 90 by the glass on the menu at 500$ the glass, I am asking to see really good wines. When is the last time you saw a good Chateauneuf (Bonneau, Perrin, Rayas) by the glass in a wine bar?
-
First, it's not 1 bottle but 10 bottles of 100ml for 250 Euro's. Then Jean Georges and Thomas Keller must be not really smart to use this oil? So at the end, everything really expensive is not appropriate? Drinking a Romanée-Conti at $4K or a Clos de la Roche ''Leroy'' 10 more expensive than any other Clos de la Roche must be completely stupid? I don't get it, why we need to talk about money here (this point is not interesting at all and always involves the bad side of the good things)!
-
We are not thinking about making 200-300% profit on a bottle here (this is not Queue de Cheval)! A bottle at 80$ should sell for 125-135$. And why you have to serve only 5 glass? 55-80ml is just perfect so you can make 8 glass easy with a bottle een if you taste it and you think about 30ml that you can't serve because of deposit. A 80$ bottle, should sell at 17-20$ the glass maximum. Anyway, there is not only poor people in this town and why when it's time to talk about more expensive things, we always freak out and think it's impossible here. Do you know how many porsche they are selling a year in Montreal? It's sold out every year! To buy the new Cayman, you have to be on the waiting list. For sure Montreal is not corporate like Toronto and it's not as big. But there is wine lovers in town that are ready to spend and I know that for a fact. The 70 panaches of DRC sells out every year in 2 days at 7000$ for the case. The courrier vinicole had 3 times more orders for the Burgundy 2002 than the last Burg primeurs and the 2002 are really expensive. Even if it's possible or not, I would love to see a place like I want open in town. As for private tastings, it's good and I am participating to many many tastings but sometimes it's fun to have a quick stop by the bar, have a good glass of wine. For now, the only choices, are openning bottles at home (wich sometimes is just too much), buy a bottle at the restaurant at a crazy price or going to private tastings wich is something completely different (this is not quick and you taste many wines and it's not when you want).
-
Well thank you for the information!
-
Bû is not well reputated to serve expensive wine. In every restaurants in town they serve Champagne by the glass (crappy Champagne like Veuve or Moet) at 20-27$. You can serve between 8-10 glass of wine with a bottle. Let's say you open a Shafer HSS that you paid 230$, you just have to sell it for 35-40$. Nobody would do the line-up at SAQ in the morning to buy Larmandier Champagne (I know it's private import) but for Shafer, it's sold out before 11h00. You need to know what to sell and people that are ready to drink these wines need to know that you have these wine by the glass. I think it's possible, since we are already two to talk about it on this discussion board. I know at least 30-40 people that will be ready to spend the money. Open a Hommage à Perrin 95 and I will pay the 50$ glass. Expensive wine sell really good in Montreal

I have always a box at home of Manni Oils so if you want to get only one 100ml bottle, let me know. Armando is a really nice guy, already been here during the film festival 3-4 years ago. www.rarewineco.com ship to Canada. www.rarewineco.com is the only US importer of Prunatelli, but you can order it from Italy also.
