  1. My favourites include a French Acadian dish called Chicken Fricot, a chicken soup with summer savory for seasoning topped off with yummy dumplings. Also, boiled dinner made with cabbage, carrots, potatoes, onions and stewed meat.
  2. The last time that I cooked crab, I used a recipe from epicurious that used the above method and it was delicious. Oven Roasted Dungeness Crab. Almost as good the next day when I ate the leftovers.
  3. I am going to be doing salads and the like for a group of approx. 100 in a few weeks for a golf tournament that we are holding for my workplace. I am eagerly awaiting the recipes for your event and hoping that I can do something besides the usual potato salad, caesar salad and mayo based pasta salad that is typical for these events. I'm not in the catering business but do love to cook and am a tad unsure about quantities so I am hoping that your recipes will aid me in gauging how much I am going to need.
  4. Well, made it back to good ol' PG after a whirl wind weekend in Vancouver. Got to try out some great restaurants that I am very sorry that I will be unable to frequent as much as I would like. Friday lunch, met Daddy-A at Go Fish for the amazing Chipotle Curry Fish Chowder and the Halibut and Chips. Nice to have tartar sauce not from a bottle and coleslaw not swimming in mayonnaise as is found in most restaurtants in PG when ordering fish and chips. Will never be able to order it again until I am back in Vancouver. Drinks and appy at West with Mooshmouse, peppyre, edible vancouver and mrs. edible vancouver. Can't remember what my first drink was (red wine recommended by the bartender) but my second glass was a Wolf Blass Riesling to accompany the seared scallops as described already by mooshmouse. Excellent food and service! Dinner at The Keg with my husband. I told him before we left PG that we weren't going to be hitting The Keg, Earl's or Moxie's while in Vancouver since we could eat at those restaurants back home. However, after keeping my hubby waiting for me while I was out with the other egulleters, I caved and let him take me there. I nibbled on the Baked Garlic Shrimp with the House Green Salad with "fresh" greens, other crap and a dijon vinaigrette. Some of the greens were wilted and the salad was swimming in the dressing. Thank god I wasn't very hungry... On Saturday evening, we had dinner at Hamilton Street Grill . Definitely the highlight of the trip for us. The service and food was excellent and will be a regular for us when we make it down there next. I had the hangar steak which was the best piece of meat that I have ever tasted. The sauce that accompanied it was amazing which I would have readily eaten up with a spoon. My husband had the 6 oz filet mignon which he thoroughly enjoyed, along with what bites of my hanger that he could bribe me into sharing. We shared a bottle of Nichol Vineyards Syrah 2001 which was fantastic and a perfect choice to accompany our dinners. We didn't think that we could eat another bite but I would be damned if I was going to leave HSG without trying the infamous g-pudding. OH MY GOD! Unfortunately, they had run out of the ginger ice cream but the pumpkin ice cream is unlike any ice cream I have tasted. My husband quickly pulled the plate to his side of the table with no intention of sharing but was easily persuaded....There is no way that I could adequately describe the g-pudding and give it the justice that it deserves so I won't even bother. Just a big THANK YOU to our server and Neil for the most excellent evening. Unfortunately, after the bottle of wine and a couple of glasses of a late riesling with dessert, my brain was a bit foggy and neither my husband nor I could remember our server's name....Neil? Lastly was our breakfast at the Elbow Room Cafe. Good breakfast with unexpected "entertainment:. The banter that goes on with the servers...definitely not PG rated. Thanks to all for your recommendations!!
  5. Hey - good to see someone else from the North end of the province! So - how accessible is Publik? We'll be driving through PG en route to points south and invariably want to stop for lunch - and Boston Pizza just ain't really cutting it - and the demise of that little coffee place up by UNB - we don't really know where to go - so - is that a yes? ← Actually, the Publik is just down the road from Boston Pizza. Go past the BP, through the set of lights at the Superstore and it is on your right (at the intersection of Hwy 16 and Hwy 97). I just phoned and confirmed that they are open for lunch. I'm not sure what their lunch menu looks like but I'm sure that it will be better than anything else you can get at that end of town while driving through. I was very sad to see the Goode News Cafe shut down also. They served great homemade soups and an interesting array of salads and sandwiches.
  6. I'm not even going to bother. If anyone else would like to take a crack at it, feel free. ← Yeah, yeah, I know, not a real martini, but it sure tastes good. No need for anyone to take a "crack" at me.
  7. A Publik opened recently in Prince George. It is located alongside the new casino here in town and seems to be doing pretty well....so far. Prince George residents love to flock to any new restaurant/pub that opens up in town. We have so few to go to that we get all excited when something new comes along. Needless to say, I've been there a few times myself. The interior is quite "hip" looking which is a nice change of scenery from some of our other options here in town. On my first visit, I went with a group of girls and some of us split a few different appetizers. I tried the jack cheese strips, calamari in a spicy soya based sauce, nachos, and something else. Food was not bad but nothing exceptional. The calamari was a nice change from the traditional deep fried with tzaziki that we get in most of the restaurants here. What stood out for me was the martini list. We tried a few different kinds with Finding Nemo as my favourite, which was flavored with mango. The service that night was a bit slow. I was in no hurry to go and was enjoying the company of my gal pals so it didn't bother me too much.... As for West Edmonton Mall, I'll be heading to Edmonton for the Easter weekend and will be making our usual trek to the mall with the kids. Will definitely have to check out Bourbon Street, sounds like some changes since I've been there last.
  8. Here I am replying to my own quote. I posted about Amarcord based on comments from other people and decided that was wrong so I went to Amarcord yesterday for lunch. I now recommend you skip this one. Don't get me wrong, the service was top notch, the pastas were very tastey and nice texture, but I didn't really like the ambiance. It felt dated. Sorry, don't know how to describe it better. My husband loved the old traditional Italian songs (cancione??) playing in the background. Sometimes I think a restaurant should only be about the food, and this is a good place to get a plate of pasta, but for a visitor I think there are better options. ← Thanks for the update butter. As Neil mentioned, I am only going to be able to have so many meals while I am visiting and am hoping to get a taste of what Vancouver has to offer. Only 23 more days! I'm getting hungry just thinking about it...is it lunch yet?
  9. I've been in contact with edible vancouver and am anxiously awaiting his recommendations on what to do while I am visiting. There is so much to see, do and eat, so little time....... HSG is definitely on the agenda though. My husband is a great lover of beef, as am I, and I'm looking forward to seeing what all the hype is about with the G-pudding. Hopefully the price hasn't been jacked up by the time I get there. snacky_cat, unfortunately I will not have a vehicle at my disposal and will be limited to what is within walking distance of the Sheraton Wall Centre. Thanks for the great link though, they've got some recipes on the site that I wouldn't mind trying out!
  10. Toasted bread with butter, jam and potato chips. My all time favourite, accompanied by a tall glass of cold milk. One of the first times my husband saw me make this I was pregnant. He "assumed" I was having a weird craving due to the pregnancy...
  11. I'd like to spend time with a catering business. Would love to know how they go about their business and make it work and launch my own venture someday. Or as a food critic for a magazine or paper who would be willing to pay me to eat out.
  12. I am going to be visiting Vancouver from April 1st - 3rd. My husband is going to be working the afternoons away which gives me free time to do as I wish. How would you spend your days if you had no commitments, work or otherwise? What restaurants would you choose to spend a leisurely lunch? Which culinary shops would you visit? Would you spend your afternoon walking around the Granville Island market or spend it browsing through food related specialty stores? Which stores do you like to frequent that satisfy your love of food and cooking?
