  2. the fact that Sean Heather was a poster on here was enough to get me ( almost ) involved in egullet . you da man . thats all .
  3. Tonight its chez transfattyacid for grilled sausages and stolen mashed potato.
  4. hi haven`t been to the Fortune garden so dont know about that , but to be honest it does sound like a cooks off duty place. i crave to be cooked for on my day off, and unless its a special occasion its normally some where cheap and cheerful, the food is often very removed from that that i spend hours toiling over at work,a diner, sushi, a curry, chinese, pizza, burgers , you get the picture . the point is you dont have to think about it , you just eat it , its not the main focus it is just what it is , no need to critique it , just consume ,its food to please not impress, hang out , relax and catch up with those you have not seen awake for days. after working my shift ( and its a long one ) i just wanna get home, throw something in the jukebox from capers, cheese on toast or grill a burger. sorry if this sounds pretty lame good question thou`

  8. no not yet, but my neighbour is a barista at the epicurean, when i bump into him next i`ll get the skiny
  9. hi all villa de lupo, kinda sh**y really. tomato risotto with roasted scollop was good but one scollop and an ounce of rice = $18 i dont think so !. the main course i`ve had tastier staff meals. dessert was taken at parkside , tarte fine of granny smith apples was the best thing i ate that night. hot dogs with lots of fried onions, at chez transfattyacid and Rangoli
  10. Is it just me or are the Golden plates the most ridiculous of any restaurant / foodie awards in the world ever ??? I mean gee guys i`m just baffled . If any one has a copy have a look and laugh . here is a few that caught my eye:- Best Desserts winner Death by Chocolate !!! WTf ? Best French Fries winner Mcdonalds ? ( you gotta be kidding me ?) Best Appetizers winner Milestones`s ( aww come on now your taking the piss surely ?) Innovative menu ? why not a category for most appetizing menu ? or am i just missing the point ? How about a category for best righteous, vegetarian reastaurant that serves the great un-washed in the fourth avenue area in the most unhygeinic kitchen known to man. Not to mention the multitude of top restaurants that are conspicuous in their abundant absence . ok i know its a readers poll. but it becomes very clear that the readers or ballot stuffers have no clue. how about a readers poll that the readers of the straight ( straight to the recycling in my house ) actually know some thing about , like tattoos and piercings , how much butt cleavage you can get away with these days or marijuana , or best brothel discuss at your leisure p.s sorry i haven`t been posting for awhile shoulder to the grind stone and all that , i`m sure SOME of you will understand
  11. make some 1 part butter milk to 3 parts cream . mix and place in a clear container , covered and leave at room temperature for 2 - 3 days , or until you can see it seperate and the bottom ( hence clear container ) . place in fridge until cold . when cold hang in a cheese cloth to seperate the whey .
  12. Slightly off topic , but please forgive . On reading a menu of an Ethiopian restaurant in North London, UK. i was shocked to see that they were serving a dish called "derek tibbs " . i kid you not, egulleters. i beleive it was a dish of ground beef, spiced and simmered in a tomato based sauce , or some guy who left his wallet in his other pants . i have googled in vain to find a link to this establishment and its penchant for serving its customers its customers.
  13. yeah fair play there
  14. hi me and the missis were down there today too . fish and chips at go fish , not bad . we walked down from 4th ( we live locally ) the market was busy and the buskers out side the bakery shop were very bad indeed ( spanish guitar man and dude playing the weird flute things ) loads of `mericans lapping it up thou . your coments ealier about the face lift are spot on the place does look a bit dated. the island should be a gem for vancouverites and tourists alike and there should be more of " best of BC " there ie , restaurants the comments from people about the parking and queues to get on the island are valid , but i must say i either walk down there from kits beach or i hop on my scooter and nip in weave through the traffic , park where i like and get the hell outta there before the buskers rot my brain , i like the idea of making GI pedestrian and only allowing trade vehicles in . shuttle busess from an off island parking lot to the market would be good for the terrorists *cough* tourists . but do you know what ? i kinda love the island ,( disclaimer* and i aint no hippy ) but i only go there for specail stuff around christmas or a treat or just a nice walk with the wife

  23. yeah . i hope moderne burger and dan get up and running soon .
  24. yeah smiths was good food , i used to enjoy their breakfasts , but on a few occasions the floor staff were kind of out of it , especially on sundays . can`t blame them for that thou , i was normally in a similar state edited ps ... the euro cafe on caledonian road was right over the road from our dodgee flat , kinda cool place with the ubiquitous diana poster , not worth a special outing to N1 thou " set breakfast #1 with tea and toast please " ..... * grabs a copy of the sun *.... ... gee that takes me back a bit ..
  25. Please forgive my ignorance. I find this thread very interesting as I ate at the Bluebird nearly 5 years ago and found it to be pretty unremarkable. What is the cause of all the renewed interest, ie. reviews? To further explain, I have been living in Vancouver, Canada for the last 2 and a half years. Have I missed out on a big change at the Bluebird to warrant all of this attention? When I was in London, I recall there were other Conran restaurants that were much more interesting. Would anyone care to suffer fill me in? By the way, I was in London this summer and visited an old haunt, St. John's. It was just as I remembered, wonderful. pretzels
