  1. Since City Fish was brought up, here is something I don't understand.  I haven't been in for a while, but I remember being able to get wild salmon any time of year.  But the season for wild salmon is May to September.  Could it be a species called wild salmon that they are referring to?

There is more than one ocean/region to get wild salmon from, I believe. Regardless, City Fish supplies some of the best restaurants in the city, they couldnt afford to mislead people.

Also, regarding the slicing issue, I believe it comes pre-packaged pre-THINLY sliced...so thats really not an issue...

Just finished off the last bit of the 1LB package i bought last week for breakfast...mmm mmmm goooood

  2. If you see the owner there, shorter italian guy with glasses (great description, I know) tell em that Justin sent you...if its him, he may give you a few free tastes :)

Also, if you havent, tried their selection of fresh clams...if you like clams that is. If you are really lucky, they may even have some fresh Langostines in!

PS - One of the reasons I love their SS so much is unlike kristapsons its thinly sliced and at a fair price.

  3. Just thought I would let you guys know that Lady York has San Marzano tomatoes on sale for $2.99 a can...great price.

Oh, and if you want to taste the best f&*k^n smoked salmon you have ever had, mosey on over to City fish (same plaza as lady york) and ask for some of their Ontario Vodka smoked salmon 1Lb for $15!!!!!

    Thank me later :)

  4. I wish Canada would allow the privatization of liquor stores ala the US.

I was in Philly not so long ago, and went to a few of their big name liquor stores, where they have this thing called "Chairman's selections" and the selection of smaller (but amazing) wineries was amazing!

I picked up a few bottles of this Newton's Unfiltered 'Epic' Merlot for $20, and it is one of the best bottles of wine I have had this year...totally amazing!

  5. Kev, No blowing cover...get ricky back up there, or ill have to find some bubbles pictures!

$230 a head...good deal? Hahahahahaha Oh boy...Let me have a second to breath here.

Not a snowballs chance in hell I would ever spend over $50 at Lobby on FOOD.

If I wanted to shell out that kind of dough, I would order the 7 course tasting menu ad Splendido, with wine pairings, and I bet it still would be less than that!

  6. I am curious what this tasting menu cost, because lobby, who charges $150 PER BOTTLE of alchohol to get a table on fri/sat, I would estimate this tasting menu to be at least $100+ / person. That being said, to be frank, that food just didnt LOOK appetizing at all! I dont know if its just me, but it looks sloppy, and just thrown together, almost amature. And yes, I totally agree with Kev about the spoons, other than for possibly an amuse bouche, they are much too boring and common.

For the kind of money (I am assuming you payed) for this tasting menu, there are sooo many other places I would rather fork over that kind of cash, which SPECIALIZE in food, rather to Lobby, where food takes second stage.

PS - Kev...I cant stop laughing at your avatar...It seems our sense of humor is on the exact same page.

PSS - Did you hear their season 6 is startin in april!?

    PSSS - Dont delete my PS's! :P

  7. hmm, interesting … I'd always written Lobby off as an overpriced 'scene and be seen' kind of place. Too be honest though, I don't see molecular gastronomy taking off in a huge way in Toronto. There are a lot of things I like about the food scene in Toronto, but I don't think it's expecially adventurous or cohesive.

How can you say that the food scene in Toronto isnt adventurous?! Toronto has one of the most dynamic multicultural populations in the world and with that in turn has such a wide variety of 'ethnic' foods...one night you can have shark fin soup, the next you can go for haggis (not me!) or some etheopian fare...not many cities in this world where you can do that.

  8. Well, although some of what comes out of the TO star is worthwhile, most of it isnt anything to go by.

To have senses, in a top 20, let alone #4 is absolutely ridiculous.

For Bistro Bakery Thuet to be in #6 position is laughable, even more so is the fact that Lei Wah Heen, Sushi Kaji, and Il Mulino (All top in their respective genre) are BEHIND JK Wine Bar..(Ok, Sushi Kaji one above) but still...insane.

    My top 10:

    1, Splendido

    2, eigensinn farm

    3, Scaramouche

    4, Il Mulino

    5, Lai Wah Heen

    6, Perigee

    7, Sushi Kaji

    8, Romania Mia

    9, Canoe

10, Susur (Even though I cant stand the guy)

  9. I did not mention this before regarding my insight to the 'under the table' comment, that being said I didnt base the vast difference in opinions simply on mine alone. I had friends who were at Lobby subsequet to my visit, who came with the same comments. You must also take in to account who owns Lobby, and their ties to the Toronto star...

    The plot thickens.
