  1. If you have some kind of refrigeration available, chocolate-coated bananas on sticks are fun!
  2. Did you ever see a bear seated contentedly in a berry patch gorging itself? I'd like to do that with blackberries! SB (Grrrrrrrrmmmmmmm
  3. Of course hot spicy food makes you sweat, which cools you off, so it's naturally popular in cultures from warmer climates. I wonder if the reputation of food from nothern regions as being bland stems from some kind of opposite pysiological effect? SB (hates ac, and luckily lives in Nothern MN )
  4. My GS Zack is almost four, and although his language skills have improved markedly over the past year, he still has some unusual ways of naming and categorizing foodstuffs. Anything roundish, reddish and foodish was always "appo", including tomatos. Even though they had the same name, he loves apples but wouldn't eat tomatos, at least until they're made into sauce and combined with anything including melted cheese, which becomes "pizzi". He also loved ketchup, which he applied liberally to any kind of meat and called it all "tukey". Lately ketchup has been supplanted as his favorite condiment by "wanch". It's been kind of fun, and I'll miss it when he's learned to talk better. SB (luckily his sister, Baby Jenna, should start "talking" about then )
  5. GF, who's famous for not reading the "fine print" on packages, brought home a carton of Edys Chocolate Chip Cherry ice cream and a box of cones yesterday. Only problem was that the cones are "Kid-Sized". That is, they're only about 1.5" tall and 1" across at the top, and hold at the most 2 Tablespoons of ice cream each! 60 of them fit into the same sized box as 12 regular sized cones. However, they prove to be the perfect size for GD Jenna, 11 months old. SB (who, for propriety's sake, has not eaten an ice cream cone in many years because of his luxurient mustache )
  6. I don't do it, but I know people who make wine from them. The Native Americans used to eat them, but only because they didn't have much else. They are a very starchy and can be harmful. Check these two sites.
  7. Berries - Straw/Blue/Ras & sometimes Black Nuts - Hazel Cherries - Choke Radish - Horse Lion Greens - Dandy oh, and lest I forget, Balls - Puff SB
  8. And if I have any leftover roasted potato I'll cube that up and toss it in too. Same thing for any leftover peas or green beans. And I forgot about diced ham and shredded cabbage! SB (and maybe even some kitchen sink? )
  9. Our salads are fairly elaborate because GF is not a big fresh vegetable eater . Lettuce, tomato, carrot (sticks for GF, sliced for me), onion (me), cuke (GF), olives (green me, black GF), quartered hard-cooked egg shared, sometimes croutons or shredded/grated cheese, crumbled bacon if I have some, with any Italian style dressing (GF) and nearly any kind (me) (Kraft bottled or Penzeys mix). Sometimes I'll have a spoonful of cottage cheese in the center of mine. SB (I also like radish and peppers, but hardly ever buy any)
  10. I do this fairly often, but I can only reiterate several points that have already been made: I never do more than 1/2 pound at a time. (If I need to grind more I'll get out the KA w/grinder attachment) I cut the meat into slightly smaller than 1" cube, and chill it in the freezer. And I use very short pulses! SB (the processor is so much easier to clean than the grinder though ....
  11. Knowing that you're in the heart of California Wine Country, why not designate a local wine or winery as the theme for each dinner, and have members prepare dishes to showcase particular attributes of the wine(s)? SB (kind of like "pairing in reverse" )
  12. Wear plaid flannel, and put vinegar or gravy on your french fries, eh! SB (lives just 80 miles South of the Great White North, and is often mistaken for a Canadian despite eating his fries with ketchup )
  13. I don't recall ever seeing a Bubble Tea, not hearing anybody mention having had one. SB
  14. I don't go out of my way to wash anything unless it's noticeably dirty. SB (and I'm maybe the healthiest person I know )
  15. I'll slam one down when I stop for gas while traveling, and I want some caffiene but don't care to consume a large volume of liquid. I'll usually grab Red Bull because it comes in the smallest can. SB (trys to coordinate the capacity of his kidneys with that of his car's fuel tank )
  16. You would think that's the very reason they would be popular with kids though, especially offered in gross colors like bright pea green and flourescent blue? SB (personally, no thanks )
  17. Maybe it's wasn't just in reference to lemonade, but a few days ago I overheard one teenaged girl tell another that "pink is the new black", so I expect to see a lot of it. SB (has always worn black, and doesn't plan to change either his wearing or lemonade drinking habits )
  18. Did you ever notice that all ears of corn have an even number of rows? The average ear has 16 rows and 800 kernals, and there is one piece of silk for each kernal. SB

    Pizza Sauce

I usually cook mine to get the flavors to meld. Canned tomatoes are fine, just drain them well. Use liberal amounts of whatever spices you prefer, plus a lot more ground pepper and sweetener (a shot of ketchup will work) than you think you should. SB (and then be generous when saucing the pizza)
  20. In this case, Pam did specify "I'd love a non-chain, non-burger choice. Please." ← Then again, there are local and regional chains and franchises that might be better than average, or even local examples of national chains that are particularly well run or managed, and popular with the locals. In the case of Fargo, I know they have a Green Mill franchise. (Twin Cities based), which makes a pretty damn good version of a Chicago-style pizza, which I wouldn't hesitiate to recommend. SB
  21. As much as I love H&D's (my Grandfather used to give Gift Baskets and Fruit of the Month Clubs for Christmas fifty years ago ) the best peaches are from Frog Hollow. Order early; they usually run out. SB (mmmmmmmmm
  22. I don't use them either, but I keep a little jar full of the ear-of-corn-shaped holders around because my Mother had them. SB
  23. I use the typewriter method backwards. SB (left-handed )
  24. Here's my Sister's report: The nicest restaurant in GF is Sanders, but it may not be open for lunch. Green Market (where she works) at 623 NP Ave Fargo is a deli/takeout but does have places to sit & offers beer/wine. They specialize in local products, organic products, & vegetarian & vegan items also (today's sandwiches were smoked salmon & pickled asparagus with caper cream cheese; roast ND beef with horseradish; egg salad with roasted red peppers; tuna wrap with kalamata olives; all on homemade bread, plus a grilled WI cheddar on sundry tomato bread) Ask for Marcy. Fancy places in FM area is Sarellos in Moorhead or Littlefields in West Fargo Thai Orchid in Fargo authentic, as is Juanos in Fargo. A new placein DL is the LOdge, but she hasn't been there yet. SB (that ought to give you a few ideas )
