  1. I dropped in for the suckling pig tonight and was disappointed not to see any other diners in the place. The roasting pig was amazing. Moist, flavorful, and delicious. He said it was a 22lb pig, brined and roasted. Beautiful crackling, tender meat. I'm hoping to round up a large enough group to dine on an entire pig there. 3 orders of roast pork, appetizers, a few drinks and espresso to finish for $85. A great meal and many of you missed out
  2. So if the first one on Hamilton st is the Hamilton Street Grill, the second might be the Langley Bypass Grill?
  3. Maybe I'm a freak, but after losing da francesco's, having had nat's, all the fast food type joints... my current favourite is pizza garden on commercial drive. I drop in, pay $2.50 for two slices of pizza and it's great. The crust is crispy at the edges, but chewy. toppings don't overwhelm the pizza itself. really simple, super cheap, and suprisingly good.
  4. I've eaten at senhor rooster twice and the cornish hen was great both times. The jalapeno sauce though is fantastic, and I order fries just to sop it up with. Wait times for food can be a little long though. Over half an hour both times I recall and the place wasn't overly busy. I think it's just the grilling itself that eats up that time.
  5. my first time were thin straight cuts, very nice. second time were seasoned curlies, also quite nice.
  6. last place I ate? in the lunchroom at work where a good friend of mine made me a birthday cake with three layers using five different types of meat (short rib, chuck, sirloin, chorizo, turkey) and parsley mashed potato frosting. some people do know me too well.
  7. Ah, I find myself in the vicinity of the infamous ling on a friday night and I didn't even realize it. Our own party of 10 had our reservation delayed by 45 minutes and were showered with comped drinks during the wait, and cheese and charcuterie the moment we sat down. duck confit salad and short rib for me. the pork tenderloin special was brilliantly executed. Such wonderful service and great food. Having waited forever to actually get around to trying feenie's food paid off nicely.
  8. Had lunch there today. I had the burger and fries, my friend the perogies. We were the first two in and wait time was a little long with that in mind. almost 30 minutes I think? fries were great (thin, crispy, nicely salted) and the burger was massive. Despite being a grand carnivore, maybe even too big and I almost dislocated my jaw eating it. But it was juicy and tasty. Music was a bit loud, but we didn't bother asking them to turn it down. Drink refills came without having to ask. Good food, but I think they could use a little work on their mise to speed things up a touch as things didn't look that well organized behind the counter. I still need to go back for the meatloaf and maybe grilled cheese on those days.
  9. A few years ago we had our christmas party at balthazar off davie. The open bar was probably the most memorable part, with single malt scotches being downed in quantity and double belvederes for me. The food was good too, but the buffet lineup was a mild annoyance. The appies came by often enough to keep most of us happy though and we danced and partied into the night. Best christmas party ever.
  10. Where were all the mexicans in the kitchen?
  11. My take after eating there once was that the biggest reason the lineups are large is because it's pretty cheap. Really didn't come away thinking the food was anything special, especially not the sushi which I found to be pretty average.
  12. Kaide Sushi on Richards I hadn't gone there for a group dinner before, but last night the chef/owner really showed me what he had. We made a pretty big order (for 6 diners) and were only 1 of 2 tables in the place. He paced the meal though instead of slamming it all out, starting with sashimi and appetizers/salads, (an off the menu item), then the chirashi, then half of the rolls we ordered. He noticed the order was large so came by to make sure we wanted to finish the rest of the order and he was right on. We dropped two of the items and finished with their amazing diablo roll (it's a fairly unique take on spicy tuna compared to most places in the city). Noting that we had already ordered two different types of tuna sashimi, he modified the chirashi to have less tuna and feature more variety of fish, including crab liver and salmon roe. For what is a very inexpensive sushi bar, the seafood is always very fresh and i'm consistently blown away by the quality. I've pretty much taken to ignoring the other japanese restaurants in yaletown after finding this gem not even a year ago. The atmosphere is very casual, the owner boisterious and welcoming and eating as much as you can for under $25 (after tax and tip) per person is easy. Friends don't let friends eat crappy sushi.
  13. I've got a pretty good appetite, but just haven't found that I get my money's worth at japanese all you can eat joints. My favourite place only costs me about $10-$12 for lunch for fresh, beautiful sushi, and when I went with a party of 6 and ate ourselves to death for dinner, the bill only came to $120. (sashimi, sushi, chirashis, seafood udons, salads) The quality was so far beyond what I'm used to at ayce places that I just can't see the appeal of $20 ayce.
  14. The burger I had at vera's on davie was rather dry and after a long absence, did nothing to make me want to come back. I should have known trouble was abrew when I saw the cooks pressing the patties on the grill. After all the raves about vera's burgers, I was a bit disappointed (though the fries and onion rings were good). I ended up adding quite a bit of ketchup to make it go down alright. maybe I'm just spoiled on the moderne turkey burger; a wonderful, juicy, delicious work of art.
  15. Gonna second the duffin's recommendation. Great sandwiches! The pork and chicken in particular. So cheap and wonderful. easily one of my favourites in the city.
  16. I remember the spicy negitoro served with garlic bread being one of the best things I've ever eaten in my life. I refer to it as "the best tuna sandwich evar"
  17. Just went to House of Selassie last night myself with the girlfriend. For a place as quiet as it was, I was amazed how fresh the food was. The greens in the salad were beautiful and perfectly dressed. Really great food, and a great host too. Great food, and very inexpensive. Can't wait to bring the gang in for the banquet.
  18. Wow. I've got to say that I'm with badiane on this one. While I try to prepare my best dishes for company, I won't hold it against anyone for not doing the same for me. Good company is what I'm there for, and just because we're drinking sodas and eating doritos isn't going to make an afternoon any less worthwhile.
  19. call me unsophisticated and simple, but i actually like taco del mar's fish tacos and burritos. the salmon and halibut fish tacos I had at cactus club on the other hand (it was a free lunch) were really nothing I need to experience again.
  20. I will not have this summer go by without participating in the eating of a whole roasted pig now.
  21. I've managed to get myself and a few friends invited to dry run before the official opening. Will let you all know how that works out.
  22. The lee's in burnaby is very tasty and licensed too, but it also came out much greasier than the richmond branch. I liked popeye's too, but the servings were kind small and expensive (for what it was) and while I liked the sides more than lee's/la, the chicken isn't quite as good.
  23. I actually found the chicken at Juicy to be overly salty, but nowhere near terrible. Prime Time was Worse. Heavier, greasier chicken, and definitely even less comfortable than juicy. I actually thought juicy was still better than KFC by far, and pretty close to church's, with Lee's/LA chicken in richmond still being the king. Oh, this encounter with Juicy was about 1.5 years ago.
  24. Kaide on richard's near pacific is the best inexpensive sushi I've had evar. Really excellent quality fish, and very cheap too. For anything on the casual sushi level, easily the best place I've been to. Lunch combos are start at $9 and are fairly generous. The $16 assorted combo comes with uni and chopped scallop, and the $11.50 chirashi is awesome.
