Yeah, I did chop up the bulbs and put them in at the beginning, simmered the soup and just stirred in the green parts a minute or two before serving.... Maybe I'll try the pasta idea -- you leave them whole for that?

What's Union making with them? I'd never heard of ramps before last week, so I wasn't sure what to do with them... The results of subbing them in on my potato leek soup were downright awful. Or maybe I just don't have a taste for them. Does anyone want to share their ideas?

There's a long discussion of Higgins here.

Mamster -- I just saw rhubarb at Frank's.

Crew, Creole, Cream, Crème, Crudité, Cranberry, Craven, Crucible, Crusoe, Crypt, Crayon, Crayfish. I think a couple of those would probably be scary theme restaurants....

You know, thinking about it... I believe I got the price wrong. I was just eyeballing the amount I needed, and my total was $5.50 for about a cup and a half. It was from the hand-foraged guys, and since I've been waiting weeks for fresh morels, I was ready to pay any price. They're not very dense, so my weight-to-handful calculations were probably way off. Sorry!

Morels are finally available, if anyone else has been looking for them. I got some beautiful ones at the Ballard Sunday Market for $10/pound.

Great, thanks for the tip! Maybe I'll hop off the bus a few stops early after work today and give it a try.

Is it the kind of happy hour with special prices on drinks, or more like the happy hour at Union, where a cocktail is still $8, but there's a special food menu?

Monday night at Crow the guy sitting next to me at the bar ordered chartreuse on the rocks and a Budweiser. They don't have Budweiser there, but my what a combination! My favorite cocktail at Veil is the Devil's Bouquet...

Liberty has finally opened on 15th Ave E on Capitol Hill, in the space that used to be the Trinkets and Treasures thrift store. They'll be serving sushi, wine and cocktails. The decor is clean and modern, with leather couches up front, a 10-12 seat bar, and tall cocktail tables with banquette seating in the back. It's kind of a soft opening this week, no menu yet although they are serving sushi (just tell them what you want), and they don't yet have a full bar (no campari = no negroni = sadness). The owner came by our table and offered a complimentary sampler of sushi, which was nice. Snapper and salmon nigiri, and spicy scallops with roe. I didn't try any since I wasn't hungry at all, but my friend did and said it was good. Overall, it feels like a nice addition to the neighborhood. Grand opening will be this Friday.

Yeah!! I love Roti. I'm glad other people are discovering it, they deserve all of the business they can get.

Mondays are half off wine at Zoe... but it's still a great suggestion! Also within walking distance (across the street) is Marco's Supperclub, which is interesting and good, with great ambience.

I've gone a few times in the last couple of months... the service is still great, the beer selection is amazing, and most of the food is quite good, for what is basically a fancy pub. I have re-tried the infamous frites, and they're better... but still not quite right. I think they've improved quite a bit in the months that they've been open, and one really does go for the beer and the cool space. Do check it out, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Hi, welcome to the neighborhood! I live on top of Queen Anne... I love the cakes at the Dahlia Bakery, in Belltown. If you're just having a small get together, one of their 4" or 6" cakes is perfect. I like the simple buttermilk cake. No need to special order, unless you want to... they usually have several in the case ready to go.

There's a new market/deli downtown called Westlake Specialty Foods. It's on 7th Ave between Stewart and Virginia, across the street from the big courthouse. They've got a great selection of high-end groceries and a lot of wines, plus made to order sandwiches with Boar's Head meats. The sandwich I had the other day was nearly 3 inches thick! The people that work there are super friendly, too.

Visiting Seattle During Twenty-Five for $25
dandelion replied to a topic in Pacific Northwest & Alaska: Dining
Okay, let's talk. I was merely quoting The Stranger article, which said that Union was asked to participate and refused: "Union's been asked to participate, Stowell has conscientiously refrained." And as I said before.... I totally agree that limiting the promotion to the same old 25 restaurants is dumb. Of course no one HAS to participate... if they don't feel that doing a low cost menu, or a promotional prix fixe menu (whatever it might be called -- 25 for $25, happy hour, etc.) is going to benefit the business, and they're happy with their current group of customers, then that's great. I just don't agree that the promotion is ALL bad, that's all I was saying, because I believe it does benefit some restaurants (Serafina, for example, was fully booked both nights I've been in this month, which is not how it's been other times I've been there). -

If restaurants decide to be mediocre with their 25/25 dinners, I pity their bad attitude. It really is a waste of a good opportunity to bring in new customers during March (notoriously the slowest month of the year), and show your existing customers that you have the talent to create something great on a limited budget. $25 is not a tiny amount of money. There are restaurants in Seattle that do a good job with it (Zoe, Serafina, Nell's, and probably others I haven't tried), so I don't agree with the blanket statement that "Twenty-Five for $25 is bullshit." Opening up the field to new restaurants would be great, it does get a little stale with the same old places every time. But that does mean that restaurants like Union would have to lose the snob factor agree to participate. -
Visiting Seattle During Twenty-Five for $25

Went with some friends to Serafina for their 25 for $25 last night. The restaurant was packed when we got there at 8pm for our reservation; I’m not sure what it’s normally like on a weekday, but we did have to wait for about 15-20 minutes for our table. There are 3 selections for each course (view menu). For the starter, I had mushroom soup, which was a generous, well-flavored portion. It’s creamy and smooth, not too heavy, and still has some texture from the mushrooms and herbs. A couple of my friends had the goat cheese and leek tart, which looks like a mini quiche on a bed of standard mixed greens. Judging from the tiny nibble I had, it was good. For the entrée, 3 of us had the lasagne, which I thought was really good. It’s a vegetarian dish, but it’s made right, with plenty of sauce and cheese, and just the right amount of chard and mushrooms to make it interesting and flavorful. One of my friends had the chicken, which she said had a good flavor from the spice rub, but was a bit overcooked and dry. We shared a bottle of Dolcetto di Dogliani Einaudi, which went well with the food, and was good but not excellent. Dessert was also a winner. The olive oil cake was really delicious, not too sweet, incredibly moist, with (I think dried) apricots poached in a simple syrup. The semifreddo had an adorable presentation: just a tiny scoop in an espresso cup with a wee biscotti. The lemon flavor was really nice and clean. Service was good, although somehow our table turned into the Mystery Spot, with wine glasses shattering, several forks and knives falling on the floor, mysterious food we hadn’t ordered appearing, and our bill actually getting larger after I pointed out a mistake on it. Nevertheless, a good time was had by all, and I’d recommend it to anyone. -

Definitely the Kingfish Cafe.... I crave their mac & cheese, my friend craves their fried chicken. When the stars are aligned, we go the Kingfish.
