  1. Jupiter and Sun Ki, Thank you both for your kind words. While neither Chika or myself were recipients of any awards this year, it was a wonderful experience being nominated. Thanks again for your moral support. It means a lot.
  2. Hi folks, The 2004 Food Blog Awards (1st Annual) are being sponsored by Kate at the Accidental Hedonist. Check out some of the food blogs that are nominated...and there are many really excellent ones. Representing Hawaii are Chika's blog She Who Eats, and my food blog, 'Ono Kine Grindz. Wish us luck!
  3. Hi Rachel, The pink sea salt that you speak of is actually called alae. Its color is actually more red than pink and the color comes from the salt being exposed to red clay. How long will it be before your parents return home? That would determine other items that I would recommend.
  4. Hi Sun Ki, Thanks for continuing this forum on bentos. I find it quite fascinating. One thing I'd like to point out to you about your post on Shirokiya. Perhaps you should make mention that Beard Papa was only a temporary addition. From what I understand, they are already gone. Too bad...the creme puffs were amazing.

    Taishoken

Hi Sun Ki, I finally got to go to Taishoken and thought it was quite good. I had the regular size and even then felt full after eating all the noodles. Don't know how you could have managed to finish a large one. I did get to visit Yotteko-ya Ramen which is at the McCully Shopping Center on the 2nd floor. The ramen was excellent, but like a reader on my blog pointed out, the ramen was probably Hataka. You can see my post here.
  6. Hi Sun Ki, I guess I didn't really care for the nasi lemak at India Cafe because there wasn't much flavor to it...either that, or it was just very mild. I'm more used to the Malaysian style of preparation which is with coconut cream and pandan leaves. BTW....a friend of mine got me a couple packages of the same instant noodle. I don't eat instant noodles so I don't know what to do with them either.
  7. Hi Sun Ki, So what did you think of the food at Komala? I used to go to the one in the Education America Building, but over the last couple of years, I've noticed that the food is not as good as it used to be. I haven't been there in a while as I've heard some not so good things about the place. On the other hand, I have been to India Cafe about 10 or so times in the last year, and although I don't care for the way they prepare their nasi lemak, the lamb curry and tofu sambal are very nice.

    Hatsune-ya

Hi Sun-Ki, Thanks for reviewing this place. I was going to stop by again in due time. The food here is excellent and much better than Sunrise (in Kapahulu).
  9. Hi Sun-Ki, Sure. She is Renee over at Shiokadelicious!
  10. The New Cafe Dalisay on Maunakea Street is pretty good, though I think many are hesitant to go there because of all the illegal activity that takes place in front and inside of the shop. There was also Alessandra's Filipino Food (I think that was the name of it) in Cunha's Alley, but that closed down when they started doing the renovations on the lobby of the Pioneer Plaza building. On Fort Street Mall, there are two Filipino food restaurants. Alyssandra's and Nayong which are right across the way from each other. Nayong used to be located on Hotel Street. I think there is either a Chinese or Vietnamese restaurant there now.
  11. Hey Alberto, Nice to see you here on eGullet too. I read on your blog that you're now one of the co-hosts of the Italy Forum here on eGullet. Congratulations! By the way, how did the nocino turn out?
  12. Hi Sun-Ki, Thanks for the compliment. Sure. What actually happened was, late last year I was watching a show called "A Cook's Tour" with Tony Bourdain. He was doing a show on Singapore. I was, at the time, planning a trip there and he mentioned a shop by the name of Sin Huat Eating House. Well, I did a quick search on the web and came across a Singaporean food blog... I started corresponding with the owner of the blog and she actually encouraged me to start one myself. That's how it started. Most of the people that read the blog are in SE Asia or in Australia and the UK. Many of them have never been to Hawaii and wanted to know what kind of food we get here. I've actually been following eGullet for a while before actually joining. I enjoy reading all of your posts...which by the way are very well written and descriptive...something I hope to be in another lifetime! Have you ever considered putting up a blog of your own? It's actually very simple and takes less than 30 minutes a day to maintain.
  13. Hi Sun-Ki, Thanks for giving my blog a mention!
