    Rangoon

yesterday, my sister and i took my mom into philly for the flower show. we went to the RTM for lunch (dinic's ... yum!) and we went to rangoon for dinner. the only other time i was there was for the DDC dinner a while back. we had the 1000 layer bread with the spicy potato dip and the spring salad as appetizers (good call on the spring salad, REALLY good!). we also had iced burmese tea. for entrees, i had the rangoon house noodles (flat rice noodles served with diced chicken, onions, tomatoes with a red bean sauce). very nice, mildly spicy and very "comfort food like". i'm a big chow fun fan (the broad, flat rice noodles), so this was a great choice for me. my mom had the mango chicken. it had a sweet and spicy sauce, with big chunks of mango, garlic and onions. we're a family of bell pepper dislikers, so we had them eliminated from the dish. my sister had the coconut curry chicken, a stew of dark meat chicken and potatoes in a sauce that didn't seem too coconutty to me, more tomatoey. we finished the meal with mango over sticky rice, a thai favorite of ours. all in all, a terrific meal. some day, i'm going to go to rangoon (or penang) and have a few orders of 1000 layer bread for dinner. i LOVE that stuff!
  2. i have a task, if anyone is up to the challege ... i went to tifco's for lunch today with a nice mix of people (eight of us). i have the translation for the dinner menu ... does anyone have a translation for the express lunch menu? most of it is translated, but there are about 10 dishes in all chinese. we got szechuan style shrimp, peking style pork, cold chicken in spicy sauce, jah jah mein, chicken in garlic sauce, ma po tofu, stir fried string beans (which were GREAT!) and chicken lo mein. the lunches are decent sized plate of food, plus soup, for 5.95. quite the good deal! there is also a back room with three round tables (that can hold about 10 people) and a long table that holds 8, so if we ever plan a larger outing, we'll have a place to sit. the service was fine. not gracious by any means, but he got the job done in a timely manner.
  3. philadining, my friend, you are amazing. being able to eat that HUGE brunch AFTER spending your saturday at the rodizio in newark ... impressive. damn impressive.
  4. there's a mexican grocery in frazer? where's it at?
  5. i'll add my 2 cents for the chester county area ... the drafting room in exton makes consistantly good cream of wild mushroom soup. thick, lots of wild mushrooms and enough madiera to warm you up. they also have a good crab and corn chowder. these are mainstays on the menu. another place is a little known place in malvern called bunha faun. this place is a little french-asian cuisine restaurant on rt 30 that you'd miss if you blinked. they're food is good, french with a few asian twists, but their soup of the day is typically outstanding. my favorite thus far has been the curried pumpkin corn chowder. i had wished the bowl would never end. my favorite place for snapper soup was a small restuarnt between west chester and chadds ford called the brass ladle. they also had a fine wine selection, but they were driven out by a mean landlord. if anyone knows a good snapper soup place in chester county, please let me know!
  6. have you tried nectar in berwyn yet? might be a little fru fru for what you're looking for, but they have really good sushi.
  7. thanks for posting the pics and commentary, percy! the food and the company were both quite lovely. not too often you get a representitive from j&j, merck, wyeth, glaxo and astra zeneca dining at the same table together. if we weren't drinking and eating so much, we could have cured cancer or something productive.
  8. rule #27: do NOT lick the anti-griddle. it's a griccle! some wines imbibed include the following: 1. sparkling riesling 2. riesling 3. Montagny 1er Cru La Grande Roche (or the BIG ROACH) Louis Latour (Burgundy) -- forgot to write down the date! 4. ? 5. cabs 6. Kiona 2003 Red Mountain Late Harvest Gewurztraminer 7. Two Hands Brilliant Disguise 2005 Moscato 8. shola's dessert wine hopefully, this will jog your memory a little and everyone else who brought wine can fill in the blanks.
  9. i'm so sad about la cena. they made a kick-ass pork sandwich. i'll be happy to have an indian place with MEAT! yay meat!
  10. i was just surfing and found this pretty nice listing of bars in the KOP area ... KOP Bar Scene. the flying pig in malvern's one of my favorite spots. the fox and the hound outside the KOP mall is your fairly standard happy hour happening, but it's not bad.
  11. there's a "taste of india" coming soon in the fairfield shopping center in exton. that's the shopping center with the giant supermarket on rt 100 & swedesford road. i'm assuming it's owned by the same "taste of india" people in wayne and phoenixville. i'm hoping it'll be as good as the one in wayne. mmmm. didn't look like there was a timeline posted anywhere as to when it will open. it will be good to have a non-vegetarian indian option in exton. i'll keep you posted.
  12. i went the twin bays cafe in phoenixville for dinner with an old college friend and her husband on saturday. although i didn't take pictures, here's my take on the restaurant ... first off, the chef, named rob, was the one to come out and let us know what the specials were for the evening. i liked that. i started with a cream of mushroom crab bisque soup, which was ok, but pretty much good cream of mushroom soup with lumps of crabmeat in it. i think i would have been happier with just the mushrooms. it tasted fine, although the crab seemed to be out of place. my entree was pan seared duck breast and duck leg confit in a raspberry vinegarette demi-glaze with sweet potato mousse and steamed string beans and carrots as the vegetable d'jour. i thought the dish was very nice. as mentioned before, not excessively creative, but very tasty (especially the sweet potato mousse). my co-eaters had the crab cakes, the rack o' lamb special and cajun style scallops. everyone was quite happy, although we had just been to the high street caffe in west chester that week for cajun food, so their cajun wasn't quite as cajuny as he liked. desserts were great (as was their coffee). my guy and i split the creme brulee and my friends had apple cake and, i think, chocolate rasperry ice cream. all in all, i thought it was a very pleasant evening. the timing of the food was right on, we didn't feel at all rushed. the food was good and nicely plated. the place is very pretty and the company was good. next time, i'll bring a camera!
  13. money is not as much of an issue as space. my one bedroom apt got crowded now that the man has moved in. i can fit about 7 bottles in the space i have alloted. i shall check out the spanish stuff. thanks!
  14. being FARRR too lazy to read through all the posts, i need to restock my wine collection. not having much room, i can do about 6-7 bottles. i was thinking 4 reds, 2 whites and 1 alternative (rose, muscat, port, etc.). i'll be happy to do more than one bottle of something if you feel it's really impressive. i like big, bold reds and dry, but fruity whites. i'm particularly fond of unfiltered reds. any suggestions i can bring along to the state store are appreciated! thanks!
  15. i like the indian grocery store next door. i go there often for breads (paratha, roti, naan) and a plethora of boxed foods (the paneer makhani is my fav). they also have sweets and other foods from the restaurant available in the store at times. the restaurant started doing only indian, then only indo-chinese, now they're a mix. they have lunch buffets, too. the last time i ate there, they were only indo-chinese. the food was pretty good (and VERY plentiful!). they also have a flat screen tv in playing the best of bollywood. all in all, not a bad place. i hope they survive (especially the market).
  16. they make really good empanadas (although i like mine spicy), their plantains are excellent. i've only had their pork as an entree, which came with rice and beans and plantains. i've had their cuban sandwich and it's awesome. you'll have to go and send back a report.
  17. so maybe it's not philly and maybe it's not pork italiano, but i needed to share my sandwich de pernil (seasoned pork sandwich with fried onions) from La Cena Grille in downingtown. i don't get there often enough, but it, by far, one of the finest pork sammiches around (and that means a lot coming from a jewish girl). the outside the inside with plantain chips and hot sauce mmmm!!
  18. there's ALWAYS a chance! some of us live really close.
  19. the melting pot in chestnut hill is a regular spot for our monthly "girls night out" at work. sometimes we do a full meal, sometimes it's just cheese and dessert. i'm partial to the cheddar and beer fondue, myself. it's not gourmet, but it's a fun place (especially with a gaggle of women with sharp implements of death and hot liquids) to hang out and blow off some steam. we had a nice hardys chiraz the last time i was there and the sommelier (they actual had one!) knew his stuff. as far as chains go, this one's not bad.
  20. Do you get to tour the crab stables? See the crabs running free in the pasture? I mean, they are free range crabs, aren't they? ← my favorite is the crab milking. teeeeeeny tinnnnnny littttttle stoooools and buckets.
  21. try this website ... Berks County Dining. there are lots of restaurants, some with website links. i've been to the crab barn before. it's pretty good. everything tastes better in a barn. let us know if you find anything good!
  22. Shoulda taken the R5 with me! The walk was a wee bit wet, but otherwise, no traffic. The dinner was great fun and it was nice to meet new people. I'm glad Rich finally figured out who I was, since we always seem to sit near each other at these events. The bread pudding coupled with Rich's Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin Ale was a near sexual experience. Thanks Charlie!
  23. i know you said within the city, but if you ever venture out, the wegman's in downingtown (chester county) and one in mt laurel, nj (opening soon) have a decent selection of english and irish foods. they have HP sauce (both the regular and the curry), all sorts of teas (like barries), biscuits, lucozade, custard mixes, etc. their cheese shop carries a bunch of english and irish cheeses. they also have other ethnic food, like indian, thai, japanese, spanish, mexican, french, german and israeli. might be incentive to hop the R5 sometime. lauren
  24. we call that "leftovers" in my country. speaking of which, the guizhou chicken was quite tasty, if not painful, as cold leftovers. i actually chugged milk from the carton to ease the burn. i'm still not sure what was in it, but i read a recipe that used cloves. could that be the secret ingredient? as far as the szechuan shrimp was concerned, on their normal menu, it's usually shrimp, peas, garlic and ginger in a red pepper spicy szechuan sauce. what they served us wasn't as hot as the usual dish and had water chestnuts or something in it. it was tasty, but not as good as their normal menu recipe. maybe they were out of peas as well as rabbit. next time we plan to go, we'll have to call ahead and make sure the bunny's in the pot before we get there. ding! lauren
  25. i went to dolce crema in moorestown the other day. that was my second visit. they have a really vast collection of flavors of gelato and sorbetto. my first time there, i had marscapone (sp?) with dark chocolate, which was wonderful. for this weekend's visit, we needed pre-packed pints, so we got rum raisin (tasted just like a buttered rum lifesaver!) and banana, which any monkey would have been in monkey heaven with. they're not quite as unusual as capogiro, but they do have a great selection and the workers and owners are really nice people. in case you don't feel like opening the link, it's in the acme shopping center down marter avenue. ciao! lauren
