  1. Hot dogs need only yellow mustard and sauerkraut with a nice soft bun. In college we used to go to this little soda-shop type place that must have been at least 70 years old. They had the best hotdogs ever - or at least it seemed that way. The buns were so light they melted in your mouth. Then on the way out you could buy their homemade chocolates. I've been to Costco and noticed the l-o-n-g lines waiting for the hotdogs as soon as the place opens. Not sure if it's worth standing in another line tho...
  2. Marinara sauce for calamari - have some imagination, folks 'Blackened' anything 'Buffalo' anything Raspberry vinagrette
  3. Wine Seafood - minimally prepared Corn
  4. I ----- am ----- exhausted----- after reading just one day.

    Sandwiches!

I ate too many of those bread and meat things during the brown bag school days and would rather starve than eat what many people call a sandwich. Let me add a few: sliced hard-boiled egg on cheese toast, cream cheese on toasted raisin bread, tuna melts, shrimp salad on anything, plus the aforementioned reubens, muffalettas, and anything with pastrami or corned beef.
  6. I've looked at this one too. The salesperson said it's programmable for up to twenty-something hours; the others are just for 8-10. I leave at 6 AM, and we don't eat until around 7 PM. That looked like it would be ideal for me but the pricetag --- aarrrgh!!
  7. Oops - mentioned this in the 52 1/2 Weeks, 53 Soups thread, but it fits here too. Red bell peppers were on sale so I made chilled red pepper soup (it's good hot also). So simple - stock, roasted peeled peppers, onions, dried hot pepper, some coconut milk, and garnished with Thai basil and croutons. To quote Rachael Ray Yum-O!
  8. Last night was my interpretation of a chilled red bell pepper soup. Used part of a can of coconut milk left over from fish curry, chicken stock, onion, and dried red pepper. Garnished with Thai basil and homemade croutons. So simple but so yummy.

    Potato Salad

Made potato salad last Sunday - boiled red potatoes, drained and cubed, added some cider vinegar then mayo, sour cream, a hint of Dijon, a chunked hard boiled egg, s&p and some sliced radishes. Certainly not anything fancy good nonetheless.
  10. As for a problem with multiple people ordering the same dish, I never realized this existed until my son gave out a big sigh when I ordered what he had been contemplating. (I think this was the second time we'd eaten out together after he moved away after college.) Being more observant in the future, I came to realize that my SIL followed the same philosophy. Not that we had to share various orders, but they just didn't want their choice duplicated. How stupid My DH and I never order the same thing; that way we at least get a taste. Usually I like his more than he likes mine
  11. Not really a food but...mayonnaise. I don't exactly love it now, but at least I don't have an attack if it's on bread. Homemade mayo, however, is another thing entirely. As a child, I remember someone bringing over eggplant on bread - I don't think my parents even offered it to me!! Now I love it any way. Also, I developed a love of calamari first and then was able appreciate it in unfried forms. I think quite often it's how the food is prepared that affects whether you like it or not, or will even try it.
  12. Any type of egg where the yolk is runny. Besides having an odd smell, you have to jump up and rinse off the plate right away or else the yolk is glued on!!
  13. I'll echo Fifi - we didn't eat out a lot. My mom would refuse to cook on Mother's Day so we'd hit a Chinese restaurant; usually the only time I didn't have a homecooked meal. Since non-homemade food was a real treat, this tasted fabulous; my favorites being Shrimp in Lobster Sauce and Butterflied Shrimp. the only Chinese made at home was chop suey with shrimp.I grew up in Balto so you can see the seafood leaning I have. I should add that my mom was from a small town in Kentucky - no crack intended - and learned to cook simple meals based on what was available seasonally with not many special spices or herbs. I thought (until I was 21) that spaghetti sauce consisted of tomato sauce, hamburger, garlic salt, and the cheese in a green can. On the other hand, she made the best crabcake EVER -- no filler or anything to take away from the crab taste. My dad was on a ship, and I don't remember him having an aversion to anything except oysters which he couldn't keep down sober or drunk!! Don't remember any Mexican food. Mom had a sauerbraten recipe (my dad was half German) that used left-over roast beef and gingersnap cookies with left-over mashed potatoes for potato pancakes. As for Polish, she'd make her version of stuffed cabbage which was layered in a casserole. Guess I need to add that mom was a WAVE who worked in DC and VA so maybe was exposed to some new ideas.
  14. Hubby and I ate there probably in March. We too had purchased wine at Planet Wine. When that was mentioned, we were given the impression that we would be seated earlier than some others. But we were told there would be about an hour to hour and a half wait. We were seated in a little over an hour, so am not quite sure if the wine purchase is a perk or not. Ditto on the wine - it's really good!
  15. Clueless as to why, but I can't eat any egg where the yolk is runny - fried, poached, soft-boiled ---- yuck!! To me it also has a strange smell, not that it's cooked in anything that would alter the odor. Mayonnaise also used to be terrible - as a child, I'd freak if it was on a sandwich (but, strangely enough, it was okay in potato or pasta salads). While living in Louisiana, a friend brought me lunch - hot dog with mustard and mayo - I was shocked and still don't know if it was a regional thing. It was very hard to act appreciatively. . Now though, I'll try most anything. Among my friends, I'm the one who eats the 'weird' foods!!
  16. For breakfast - grits and tuna fish or salmon (yes, from a can). One of my kids' staples growing up - my son and his dad used to fight for the spine bones so I had to be sure to divide them equally. This was horrifying to me at first, but it actually isn't bad. MY combination is Diet Pepsi and orange juice - looks like it will curdle when the oj is poured in, but it's awesome. I guess it's that citrus thing that cuts the sugar from the soda. I put lemon and/or lime in my sodas for years before the manufacturers thought of it. When I make that combo at work, I've learned to hide it because people get grossed out from it .
  17. I agree with WineSonoma - they're too big to hold, especially when they contain wine and the drinker has a small hand. I've been told my hand is the size of a ten year old's. My daughter loves to make fun of me because she can pick up two cans in one hand and I can't. I'll stick to stems!! (Plus they just look more elegant and I'm not into fingerprints.)
  18. One sure-fire way for me to avoid over-buying -- don't get a cart or basket. That way I'm limited to what I can juggle through the store. On the other hand, if I take home only what's needed right now, later I poke miserably around the cabinets & fridge searching for something yummy that's not there.

    Rhubarb

    No-one mentioned rhubarb-strawberry pie !!
  20. Once I am free (from students), I know I'll be investigating RG more thoroughly. Summer is my time to play and try new recipes. Since I am still somewhat new to eG, I don't know what the former format was but am thrilled to have a solid base of recipes to investigate. Merci to all who worked to bring it back!!
  21. This thread is hysterical! I love to check out others' carts too. I've never had anyone say anything to me about what I have --- but one day a checker had no idea what a jalapeno pepper was !!??? Rolled produce code thingy over and over and looked perplexed, so I told him what it was. He picked up from the scale and tossed it in the bag, saying that it must not cost much so I could have it free. Now.......... if only someone would do that for a standing rib roast!
  22. I do the Chesapeake Bay thing - my own crab seasoning consisting of a blend of kosher salt, cayenne pepper and a mix of Old Bay and/or one or more of the Wye River blends (black pepper, red pepper or spicy). Guaranteed pleasing for those who may not like fish but do like spicy and heat !!! Hard to believe there are people like that in the world, isn't it ?!?

    Dinner! 2005

Sorry, no pics, but in honor of Cinco de Mayo we had Sour Cream Chicken Enchiladas Supreme from the Mexican Family Favorites Cook Book. Substituted Mexican crema for the sour cream - EXCELLENT - and happy to have left-overs for tomorrow.
  24. Doesn't take the place of a roux - file at the table. Add to taste.
  25. Thai is definitely one where I will over-order -- you can always eat it tomorrow especially appetizers or something not served piping hot - like lap gai or beef salad. Tapas - order and -- eat, and eat, and eat. But then, this is a habit with me - I don't usually drink an entire canned soda at one time and cover it with a zip-lock bag, which drives my DH crazy. When I eat out, I order things I don't usually make myself so I want to taste everything, and if that means ordering more than I can eat then..... so what !!!
