  1. I've ordered from Niman Ranch for years now and have been consistently very happy with its product. Its commitment to humane treatment of the animals as well as all-natural feed really shows in the quality of the meat. Try it - I think you'll be really pleased.
  2. OO - be sure to hit Montage, even for just high tea or a drink - gorgeous environment/views. And I'm sure Las Brisas is on your list - better without the kids but workable either way. Coyote Grill has great Mexican, I'd recommend Rumari's for Italian, and Anastasia's does a nice breakfast. I hope you'll be there for art-a-fair - definitely a highlight of the area for several months a year. Enjoy!
  3. You know, I've had lemon chess and chocolate chess pies, but if your friend has voiced a craving for a chess pie, she is probably thinking of just a plain ol' (love the jes' pie quote) chess pie and you shouldn't try to doctor it up (no pun intended) for your (home)sick friend. :)
  4. On the north side of the lake, Dragonfly is a Pan Asian restaurant in Truckee that is quite nice, and Cottonwood has a great atmosphere and decent food. Rosie's Cafe is a great local spot for breakfast, in Tahoe City. I don't think there's a brewery on the north side, but South Lake Tahoe has The Brewery, with its Bad Ass Ale. Great hiking all around the lake - tons of small lakes tucked in the mountains and great views everywhere. Enjoy your stay!
  5. I'm from the South and this is my grandmother's recipe for chess pie - very basic but very good. 9 inch pie crust 3 eggs 3/4 T white vinegar 1/2 c butter, melted 1 t vanilla 1 1/2 c sugar pinch of salt Preheat oven to 400. Prepare pie crust. Combine butter and sugar and simmer, stirring, for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool just a little, stirring constantly. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla, salt, and vinegar, and mix well. Pour filling into pie shell and bake for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 and bake for 20 to 30 more minutes. Shake the pie gently; if the center just quivers slightly, it's done. Enjoy!
