There's always cassoulet. Though that's more of a winter dish than anything. Still, I suppose a pate or a terrine might be good. And there's always bacon and cabbage. I'm thinking you could combine the bacon with a cabbage or jicama-based slaw, kind of like a twist on the classical stewed cabbage with pancetta and onions. I'd be happy with it, a loaf of bread and a carafe of wine. No reason to mess with simplicity. Soba

Yumcha (Frank Bruni) Chef Angelo Sosa, formerly of Jean Georges and Spice Market, offers a new look at fusion cuisine in the heart of Greenwich Village. Soba

Thanks to you both for an especially fun and educational week. Our next Tag Team won't occur until the fall (just in time for fall sweeps, eh wot?), though I suppose a hint can't hurt. Think of it as the ultimate in fusion cuisine. Bobby Flay would be proud. We're going to leave this thread open for a few more hours just in case anyone wants to post fond farewells. Tune in tomorrow morning when the next installment of the eGullet Foodblog will be up and running. Strawberries and clotted cream, anyone? Soba

Is this a book or a television series...?

If only they had fast food sloppy joes or bbq sandwiches. Say what you will about McDonald's, but the McRib sandwich promotion doesn't come around often enough. And who can forget Burger King's Bullseye sandwiches? (basically your standard bacon cheeseburger with onions and Bullseye bbq sauce) *drool* Soba

Ok, voting's over for the mystery basket "challenge" for Sunday. Here are the results: A. Seafood fish/dish. (1 vote) B. Asparagus, crab and lamb. (1 vote) C. Asparagus, salmon, strawberries. (1 vote) D. As option C but with the addition of rhubarb. (1 vote) E. Ice cream and Nutella. (1 vote) F. Fish and/or vegetarian. (1 vote) G. All vegetarian. (7 votes) H. Chocolate, chicken, rice, beans. (1 vote) I. Apricots, peaches, pistachios, ras el hanout and rhubarb. (3 votes) J. Tofu, cheese, wine, chocolate and chile peppers. (2 votes) K. Rhubarb, hibiscus and other "red" foods (cherries for example). (1 vote) L. Squab, quinoa, zucchini, leeks, rhubarb, radishes, mascarpone. (1 vote) M. Vegetarian and featuring homemade pasta. (1 vote) N. Ground beef and something with apples for dessert. Eggs may be substituted in place of ground beef. Alternately, ground meat (not necessarily beef) can be substituted for the ground beef, but if so, 1/2 lb. must be used. (4 votes) O. As option N but also -- Fruit may feature in the meal. Entree should be something light and vegetarian. (1 vote) P. Meatloaf. May be made with chicken, turkey or other meat. (2 votes) Q. As option P, but with ham and bacon. (1 vote) R. Chocolate in all courses. (1 vote) S. As option G but with tofu. (1 vote) T. As option G but with champagne. (1 vote) U. Pheasant, ramps, tamarind. Duck may be substituted. (1 vote) [this was Smithy's original suggestion] V. 1/2 lb. seafood item, rack of lamb or duck, pea shoots or spring peas, orzo or polenta, rhubarb or cherries, chocolate. (1 vote) W. Duck OR squab; leeks OR ramps; quinoa OR rice; apples OR cherries; chocolate. (1 vote) Top three vote getters are in bold. However, since Marlene has indicated that her family's preferences lie in another direction, it might be best if both Sam and Marlene could cook a meal using the ingredients/concepts amongst options G, I and N in order to produce something that their families will likely eat. Should be interesting in any event. Soba PS. Since this is the first time we've done this kind of Foodblog, some kinks are inevitable. Thanks for being patient with us during this whole process.

I've never been able to figure out why foodies tend to despise ketchup. Like just about any condiment, it has its applications. If you don't like it, there are a million other condiments out there. The same goes for Worcestershire sauce and barbecue sauce, deli mustard and honey mustard, pickle relish and mango chutney, and jarred salsa. Why ask why? Just enjoy it for what it is. Maybe I'm weird for liking ketchup. I also will eat pickle relish straight out of a jar. Ditto for hoisin sauce. Soba PS. In the omuraisu thread in the Japan forum, Hiroyuki asks pretty much the same question, ao I thought I'd ask all y'all.

Oh, thank you, Marlene. I've been sniveling quietly, wondering why my duck suggestion has been ignored. I suggest an either/or type of list: Duck OR squab; leeks OR ramps; quinoa OR rice; apples OR cherries; chocolate (hi, K!) Sound too wishy-washy, or does that give y'all room to move? By the way, nice haul from Williams-Sonoma! ← Done. See above.

Just an update on the mystery ingredient basket vote. Here are the choices thus far... A. Seafood fish/dish. (1 vote) B. Asparagus, crab and lamb. (1 vote) C. Asparagus, salmon, strawberries. (1 vote) D. As option C but with the addition of rhubarb. (1 vote) E. Ice cream and Nutella. (1 vote) F. Fish and/or vegetarian. (1 vote) G. All vegetarian. (7 votes) H. Rhubarb, hibiscus and other "red" foods (cherries for example). (1 vote) L. Squab, quinoa, zucchini, leeks, rhubarb, radishes, mascarpone. (1 vote) These are new options since the initial set of posts: M. (1 vote) W. Duck OR squab; leeks OR ramps; quinoa OR rice; apples OR cherries; chocolate. (1 vote) There's still time to vote on or make suggestions for Sunday's "challenge". Deadline on voting is tomorrow evening at 6 pm EST. To vote, either post a reply to this thread or send me a PM. If you make a suggestion, the vote tally counts you as one of the votes. Soba edit: some of you may see this post updated every so often, fyi.

Veal calves are 16-20 weeks and done. I actually think naming these might be a bit of overdoing it... A lot of great info here: http://www.noveal.org ← With all due respect, whilst this is a perfectly valid line of discussion, I believe the focus of this thread is on Bobolink Dairy and not the morality of raising what many consider to be a "cruel" food. Perhaps a separate thread would serve this particular thread best. Soba

After you have accidentally stabbed yourself in the palm due to misplacement of a knife in the dishwasher (as I have ), it won't take too much convincing to place knives point down. Soba

well, that's easy. I used to loathe -- and I mean loathe -- garlic and just about anything spicy. Not any more, lol. Soba

Keep in mind the following caveats: yes, well that's because I'm a carnivore at heart. We just don't eat fish. I don't mind making it if that's what the members decide, but I can almost guarantee that no one in the house will eat it, which sort of seems like a waste. Vegetarian? Hmmmm............ ← and We'd like to have a consensus by Thursday so as to give Marlene and Sam time to procure the ingredients as well as coming up with a meal that uses them. Ideally, the basket should contain five or six ingredients that the meal focuses on. Staples such as oil, salt/pepper, onions and garlic don't count. I will be keeping track of the suggestions as they appear on this thread and will post a list in the next three or four days. PM me as to which batch of suggestions gets your vote. The batch with the most replies will become the mystery basket. Soba ← Also suzilightning suggested Inniskillin ice wine and celeriac. Ice wine has been ruled out due to prohibitive expenses. Ingredients should be fairly accessible for both Sam and Marlene and be reasonable in terms of budget. This list will be updated as necessary. Deadline for voting is Thursday evening at 6 pm EST. Have at it. Soba

F. If you vote for this suggestion, please keep in mind the caveats in this post. G. Yes! The perfect challenge! Some suggestions have been raised as to vegetables in season: Fiddleheads, English peas, fava beans, asparagus, early tomatoes. . . Why not a vegetable plate for mystery basket night? Some artisinal grits perhaps? Really good vegetable plates can be a great way to express creativity. I'm just sayin.' Looking forward to it. ← If you vote for this suggestion, please keep in mind the caveats in this post. H. I. Pan added rhubarb to this suggestion in a later post. Swisskaese added ras el hanout in a later post. J. K. L. (continued)

ok, so far we have the following suggestions for the mystery basket on Sunday: A. Seafood/fish dish If you vote for this suggestion, please keep in mind the caveats in this post. B. Genny also suggested lamb as a protein selection in a later post. C. D. Same as C but with the addition of rhubarb: and/or rhubarb. Could be an interesting ingredient which might be used as savory or sweet. Some interesting recent discussions here and here. Hope that a seasonal (to both places) ingredient is picked. ← E. (continued in next post due to quote tag limit)

I have had it the traditional style (katsuobushi, ginger paste and scallions, light on the soy). Another version is on top of shaved ice with a scattering of ikura, flying fish roe and finely chopped oshinko. And then, there's always furikake. Soba
